Rapid DNA technology gets help from new law – The Mercury News – The Mercury News

PLEASANTON At the IntegenX Inc. headquarters on Stoneridge Drive, employees are hard at work developing upgrades to their product: a small machine that can unravel DNA code in less than two hours. The company is a leader in the market for what is known as rapid DNA technology, which has shortened the time it takes to process DNA testing from weeks to about 90 minutes. It could get a boost from recently passed legislation that sets new federal rules for how law enforcement processes DNA, something the companys leaders have been lobbying for in the past few years. IntegenX CEO Robert Schueren called the passage of the bill the Rapid DNA Act of 2017 a landmark day in fighting crime. The bill will allow law enforcement agencies to perform real-time DNA testing at the time of arrest at their own booking stations, comparing samples to profiles in the FBIs Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) under guidelines set by the FBI. Using the technology, investigators can find out whether an arrestees DNA matches the DNA in the FBI database while suspects are still being processed. But the prospect raises privacy concerns for some. Before the legislation, law enforcement agencies had to … Continue reading

Haqqani: Cardiovascular health in women Part two – Midland Daily News

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2017

Dr. Omar P. Haqqanifor the Daily News Dr. Omar P. Haqqani Dr. Omar P. Haqqani Haqqani:Cardiovascular health in women Part two In part 1 of our series addressing cardiovascular health in women, we discussed the three most significant risk factors in developing cardiovascular disease. This week, we focus on the two deadliest cardiovascular events that can result from CVD, which are heart attacks and strokes. Heart Attacks Heart attacks are often viewed as something that primarily strike men; however, nearly a quarter million women a year die from them. That is 5 times higher than the number of deaths resulting from breast cancer. In order to reduce occurrences of this cardiac event, women should be aware that a heart attack does not always feel the same in females as it does in men. The typical heart attack signs -- severe chest pain radiating down one arm or extreme shortness of breath -- can certainly occur in women, but many times, their symptoms are much more subtle. They include: Chest pain or discomfort that feels more like a fullness or squeezing throughout the chest rather than sharp, severe pain on the left side. Pain in your back, neck or jaw that … Continue reading

This robo-exoskeleton is helping kids with cerebral palsy to walk – TechRadar

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2017

A new study has shown great potential for using robotic exoskeletons to physically train young sufferers of cerebral palsy to walk. Cerebral palsy is an umbrella terms for a range of neurological and movement disorders that develop during early life. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, it is the most common motor disability in childhood, with global figures ranging from 1.5 to more than 4 per 1,000 live births or children of a defined age range. Sufferers usually walk with their knees in constant flexion, in a gait known as crouch gait. This basically means that their legs cannot straighten fully as they walk. This is often treated using physical stimulation, injections and surgery. The problem is that even with the current treatments available, children with the debilitating condition still end up losing their mobility as they approach adulthood. According to the paper published from this study, half of all children with cerebral palsy completely lose the ability to walk by adulthood. The study, run a team of biomedical engineers of the National Institute of Health, hopes to prove that using robotic exoskeletons could help to train childrens bodies to keep their mobility into later life. In … Continue reading

CP Time Management Challenges: Here’s What Works for Me – Cerebral Palsy News Today

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2017

From the moment you entered grade school, youve been told how important it is to be organized. Later, your teachers added a task and told you that being organized also meant knowing how to manage your time. Learning time management is such an important part of learning how to function successfully in life, and it is difficult for everyone. But, from the outside, most people make it look so easy. It seems like they dont juggle half as many things as you they go to work or school only, they dont have multiple doctor appointments a week or therapies they attend. I have been interested in time management for the better part of the past five years. Trying to accomplish any goal while battling an illness or multiple illnesses is not for the faint of heart and every second counts. I have tried so many things, from GTD brain dumping techniques, living a strictly digital life, paper to-do lists, creating a daily schedule for myself and all left me feeling defeated. I started back at square one. I found during all of this trial-and-error period that I liked paper planning and writing down things. I also knew that I liked apps. … Continue reading

NAU study: Robotic exoskeletons improve walking for children with CP – AZ Big Media

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2017

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cerebral palsy (CP)caused by neurological damage before, during or after birthis the most common movement disorder in children, limiting mobility and independence throughout their lives. An estimated 500,000 children in the U.S. have CP. Although nearly 60 percent of children with the disorder can walk independently, many have crouch gait, a pathological walking pattern characterized by excessive knee bending, which can cause an abnormally high level of stress on the knee. Crouch gait can lead to knee pain and progressive loss of function and is often treated through invasive orthopedic surgery. Assistant professor ofmechanical engineering Zach Lerner, who joined Northern Arizona Universitys Center for Bioengineering Innovation in 2017, recently published a study in the journalScience Translational Medicine investigating whether wearing a robotic exoskeletona leg brace powered by small motorscould alleviate crouch gait in children with cerebral palsy. We evaluated a novel exoskeleton for the treatment of crouch gait, one of the most debilitating pathologies in CP, Lerner said. In our exploratory, multi-week trial, we fitted seven participants between the ages of five and 19 with robotic exoskeletons designed to increase their ability to extend their knees at specific phases in the … Continue reading

Callous thief stole from woman with cerebral palsy and another, 77, who could only move with oxygen – Derby Telegraph

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2017

A thief and fraudster from Derbyshire who deliberately targeted elderly or vulnerable victims has been jailed for two years. Kayleigh Bradshaw moved herself in to one mans home for two days knowing he had alcohol problems and suffered from bi-polar disorder. She ate his food, drank his booze and stole 330 of goods from him. That experience left the man needing hospital treatment for anxiety. Bradshaw then moved on to twice steal cash from a 77-year-old woman who could only get around with the help of oxygen. Another victim, a woman in her 40s who suffered from cerebral palsy, was targeted by the 37-year-old who stole her purse from a locker at a public swimming pool. And Bradshaw also stole a purse from the handbag of a woman who had put it on her sons pushchair at a church. Jailing her at Derby Crown Court for two years, Judge Robert Egbuna said: You were aggressive in your approach to obtaining money, it was planned and you targeted elderly or vulnerable people. You preyed on vulnerable members of society who require our protection and assistance. You caused them untold anxiety and you were persistent in committing your callous crimes. You knew … Continue reading

Stem Cell Treatment for Children With Spina Bifida Helps Dogs First … – UC Davis

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2017

A pair of English bulldog puppies are the first patients to be successfully treated with a unique therapy a combination of surgery and stem cells developed at the University of California, Davis, to help preserve lower-limb function in children with spina bifida. (Editorsnote: Photos and b-roll available.) Because dogs with the birth defect frequently have little control of their hindquarters, they also have little hope for a future. They are typically euthanized as puppies. At their postsurgery re-check at 4 months old, however, the siblings, named Darla and Spanky, showed off their abilities to walk, run and play to their doctor, veterinary neurosurgeon Beverly Sturges. The initial results of the surgery are promising, as far as hind limb control, said Sturges. Both dogs seemed to have improved range of motion and control of their limbs. The dogs have since been adopted, and continue to do well at their home in New Mexico. Spina bifida occurs when spinal tissue improperly fuses in utero, causing a range of cognitive, mobility, urinary and bowel disabilities in about 1,500 to 2,000 children born in the U.S. each year. The dogs procedure, which involved surgical techniques developed by fetal surgeon Diana Farmer of UC Davis … Continue reading

A new clue to hair loss: A misbehaving enzyme in follicle stem cells – STAT

Posted: Published on August 27th, 2017

T he roots of hair loss run deep: Its linked to hormonal balance, immune response, stem cell signaling, and now, according to new research from University of California, Los Angeles metabolism. The study, published inNature Cell Biology, finds that the metabolism in the stem cells embedded in hair follicles is different from surrounding cells. When they tinkered with that metabolic pathway in mice, they could either halt hair growth or make it proliferate. The UCLA researchers are now testing out a duo of drugs to try and prompt that hair to grow.
