Emergency spending authorized for VA program, but is it enough? – Hometown Focus

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. The day before the U.S. would lose two more American lives during combat operations in Iraq, President Donald Trump signed an emergency spending bill, the VA Choice and Quality Employment Act, that authorizes more than $2 billion for the Veterans Choice Program. At present, almost one-third of VA appointments are referred to the private sector, up from fewer than 20 % in 2014. The VAs annual budget of about $180 billion will provide $2.1 billion in funding for veterans health care in the community at government expense. While the new law will draw attention largely because of the urgency in which it replenished the VAs healthcare budget a budget that has been depleting faster than expected since 2014 the new law also addresses other critical priorities aimed to improve the VA: A bilateral exchange program for employeesin VA and the private sector to cross-trainproviders in both health care domains The development of training and annualperformance standards for employees andpreparing them for future leadership roleswithin the Department The establishment of promotion tracksdesigned to retain employees with specialexpertise Provisions to attract transitioning servicemembers and recently graduated collegestudents into employment opportunities withthe VA Training on recruitment and retention bestpractices for human … Continue reading

We May Be Able to Treat Parkinson’s Disease With an Implant – Fortune

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2017

Last year, I reported on Titan Pharmaceuticals and partner Braeburn Pharmaceuticals' milestone Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for an implant to treat opioid addiction. Using Titan's "ProNeura" platform technologycomposed of matchstick-sized implants inserted in the upper armthe companies won marketing approval for Probuphine, which dispenses a medication called buprenorphine for up to six months. This therapy both treats pain while weaning users off of more powerful addictive opioids and presents one option for tackling the opioid crisis. Now, Titan has been given the FDA go-ahead to launch trials for a long-acting implant with a commonly used Parkinson's disease drug called ropinirole. The automated delivery system could be particularly useful for Parkinson's patients, as the company explains, since a drop-off in symptom control medication levels can make life extremely difficult for people suffering from the disease. Parkinson's symptoms may include tremors, stiffness, and loss of balance. "While oral formulations of ropinirole have greatly benefitted those suffering from Parkinson's disease, many patients develop serious motor complications and dyskinesias after several years, due to the peak-trough fluctuations of medication in the blood," said Titan executive vice president and chief development officer Kate Beebe in a statement. "Our ropinirole implant is designed to … Continue reading

Parkinson’s Treatment by Internet Can Match In-person Visits … – Parkinson’s News Today

Virtual house calls with a neurologist can be as effective as in-person visits for Parkinsons disease patients, offering convenience and comfort, a clinical trial indicates. The study, National randomized controlled trial of virtual house calls for Parkinson disease, was published in the journal Neurology. The internet has led to what is known as telemedicine, or virtual house calls between physicians and patients in the treatment of certain conditions. But whilepilot efforts have suggested that virtual house calls are feasible, valuable to patients, and have similar clinical outcomes to in-person care in Parkinsons disease, they arent used much in chronic conditions like Parkinsons, researchers said. The team decided to conduct a clinical trial(NCT02038959) to evaluate whether virtual house calls are feasible for Parkinsons patients and can improve their health. Researchers also wanted to know how virtual house calls affect the quality of patients care and their quality of life, compared with in-person visits. And they wanted to know whether virtual house calls saved patients time, the need for them to travel, and can reduce caregiver burden. The proportion of patients who completed at least one virtual visit, as well as the number of virtual visits they completed on time, were the … Continue reading

Stanford Medicine magazine reports on the future of vision – Stanford Medical Center Report

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2017

Many of the strategies being explored at the Stanford University School of Medicine to protect, improve and restore vision sound seriously sci-fi. Among them: cornea transplants conducted with magnetic fields instead of scalpels, virtual reality workouts to repair damaged retinas, and bionic vision. The new issue of Stanford Medicine magazine, a theme issue on eyes and vision, includes details about these projects and others pushing the boundaries of biology and technology to help people see. Studies show that when it comes to their health, the thing people most worry about, after death, is losing their vision, said Jeffrey Goldberg, MD, professor and chair of ophthalmology, in the reports lead article. Peoples productivity and their activities of daily life hinge critically on vision, more than on any other sense. The lead article explains the basic workings of the eye and describes an array of ophthalmological research, including Goldbergs work to repair damaged corneas by injecting healthy cells into the eye and using magnets to pull the cells into position. A patient in a small early study entered the trial legally blind, with 20/200 vision, and left it with 20/40 vision close to normal. A larger study is planned to begin soon. … Continue reading

Future medicine-makers get a peek into the industry – Andover Townsman

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2017

It isn't often that you see teens huddled around beakers and graduated cylinders, looking at chemistry equations, wearing slightly over-sized lab coats over their jeans and sneakers. Outside of a classroom, that is. But high school students got to do just that, in a real laboratory, working alongside real scientists, just last week. The Eisai Andover innovative Medicines Institute (AiM) on Corporate Drive is a facility where scientists from many different sciences work to develop medicines for diseases such as Alzheimers and cancer. AiM is a part of Eisai, an international human health care company that creates products and conducts medicine research. AiM held a week-long event for high school students to educate them about medicine and science on the week of Aug. 14.The event was put together by Nadeem Sarwar, president of AiM. Sarwar had done this a few years ago and it was very successful," said Sarah Buco, senior human resources manager of Eisai US. "It was a similar approach that was hands-on, but also had lectures, almost like science camp." Students listened to lectures, participated in experiments like synthesizing aspirin, and prepared a presentation based on research during their time at AiM. We want to inspire the … Continue reading

Home/Mumbai/IVF treatment demand shoots up by over 100% in Mumbai By Swapnil Mishra|Aug 24, 2017 08:06 am Mumbai: Blame it on lifestyle or abuse of substance or just plain luck, sperm count among male Mumbaikars has gone down so low that the demand for test tube babies has seen more than 100% rise in the city. According to the civic health department, cases of In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment being sought have gone up by more than 100 per cent between 2012 and 2016. In the same period, 32,864 Mumbaikars have approached IVF experts for pregnancy tests. The doctors said on an average, 5,000 children are born every year, through IVF as change in lifestyle has made the sperm count among males decrease drastically due to which couples prefer IVF. Health officials further said more than 60 new IVF centres have been registered in the last three years in the city alone. There has been a consistent increase in the registration of IVF cases in the 17 wards from 2014 to 2016. Environmental factors to blame for modern male fertility crisis – Irish Examiner

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2017

Environmental factors such as airborne pollutants and pesticides in our foods are leading to a decline in the quality and quantity of male sperm, says Lorraine Courtney. THE infertility crisis at the heart of the recently televisedThe Handmaids Taleis the reason why Gileads founders staged a coup, overthrowing democracy and reclaiming fertile women, like Elizabeth Moss character Offred, as state property. Channel 4s dramatisation of Margaret Attwoods dystopian novel got rave reviews and drew large audiences. But new research suggests that by linking infertility to environmental issues, the near-futuristic series may too far-fetched after all. Mens sperm counts have fallen by almost 60% since the 1970s, according to major new research which cautions that our modern world may be prompting a male fertility crisis. Over the past few years, various studies have pointed to declining sperm quality and quantity. This latest research, and the first systematic review of trends, looked at 180 studies over four decades. It concluded that total sperm counts in Western countries have fallen by 59% since 1973, with a 52% fall in sperm concentration, or the concentration of sperm in a mans ejaculate. Decreasing sperm count has been of great concern since it was first reported … Continue reading

Infertility – Let’s Shift The Paradigm From Treatment To Prevention – HuffPost UK

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2017

Comments recently published in The Independent have deemed fertility testing unnecessary and even harmful, causing both false reassurance and unnecessary anxiety. I could not disagree more, and believe such statements detract from the very important role "fertility testing" has in reducing the UK's reliance on IVF and assisted conception. Fertility testing is a key tool in changing our focus as a country to prevention, and not just treatment. With 1 out of 6 couples now requiring a fertility doctor to help them achieve a pregnancy, I disagree with the suggestion that women do not need such tests unless they are having trouble conceiving. These tests provide both men and women with crucial information about their chances of conceiving that enables them to make informed decisions before it may be too late. In 20 years of testing men and women for fertility, I have had countless express gratitude for results that have enabled them to take proactive measures to conceive naturally and avoid expensive and stressful IVF treatment. Equally it has provided others with peace of mind that they still have time before they need to consider having children. Such tests are very simple, with the most common being the Anti-Mllerian … Continue reading

How In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Really Works – Allure Magazine

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2017

Getting pregnant can be one of the most exciting chapters in life that is, if you want children in the first place. Even if you do, conceiving can be difficult. For some would-be parents, that's where assisted reproductive technology, or fertility treatments that involve both eggs and embryos, comes in. In vitro fertilization (IVF), for example, is a more and more popular technique for having babies: A 2014 report from the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology found that IVF led to the births of 1.5 percent of all babies born in the U.S. in 2012, an all-time high. To get the lowdown on how it works, who can benefit from it, and more, Allure spoke with fertility doctors Zaher Merhi, the director of IVF Research and Technology at New Hope Fertility Center, and Joel Batzofin, founder of New York Fertility Services. Ahead, what you should know about this increasingly common treatment. When a patient decides to get IVF, they begin by taking medication that helps stimulate the production of eggs. They're monitored by a doctor with blood tests and ultrasounds to make sure they're healthy during the process and that their eggs are maturing; eventually, the practitioner extracts the eggs … Continue reading

Researchers discover cancer stem cell pathway in endometrial cancer – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2017

A team of Cleveland Clinic researchers have discovered a key pathway that leads to recurrence and treatment resistance in endometrial cancer, providing the potential for much needed new therapies for women with limited options. For the past 25 years, standard therapy for endometrial and ovarian cancers has included surgery and the chemotherapy drug cisplatin. While these treatments typically are initially successful, the cancer often recurs and becomes resistant to cisplatin, leaving patients with limited treatment options. The Cleveland Clinic team studied the unique role of an immune regulatory protein, called CD55, which is abundant on the surface of endometrioid ovarian cancer and uterine cancer cells. Using human cells and patient-derived tissue models, they found CD55 to be the most prevalent on cancer stem cells, a subgroup of aggressive cancer cells that are thought to be responsible for recurrence and spread of many types of cancer. The researchers discovered that high levels of CD55 caused cancer stem cells to be more aggressive and resistant to cisplatin than non-stem cell cancer cells. The CD55 pathway is unique in that it controls both stem cell self-regulation/growth and therapeutic resistance, while other mechanisms control just one or the other. In addition, when CD55 was … Continue reading
