Helmet improvements change the way paramedics, EMTs treat injured athletes on the sidelines – The Denver Post

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2017

Advancements in the safety features on football helmets and other gear have changed best practices for first responders treating athletes on the sidelines. St. Anthonys Hospital emergency-room doctors on Friday trained paramedics and emergency medical technicians from West Metro Fire Rescue on assessing and stabilizing injured high school and college football players. Theyll do it again on Thursday The training focused on head and spinal-cord injuries. We havent seen an uptick in this type of injury, West Metro Fire spokeswoman Ronda Scholting said. NFL concussion procedures have changed, so the protocols were introducing to paramedics, medics and EMTs are on how to best package a patient, whether from high school to the professional level. St. Anthony Hospital sees 60,000 patients per year and 1 percent of those are categorized as sports-related injuries. Not all 600 of those patients are admitted for suspected brain trauma or concussion, but the start of the contact-sports season and updates to the safety features of football equipment means new approaches to treatment. Football helmets now have air bladders in them that cushion the head, St. Anthony clinical nurse specialist Shawn Zembles. You can remove the helmet guard to access the face and neck without removing … Continue reading

Therapeutic Cocktail Could Restore Motor Skills After Spinal Cord Injury, Stroke – Bioscience Technology

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2017

After spinal cord injury or stroke, axons originating in the brain's cortex and along the spinal cord become damaged, disrupting motor skills. Now, according to new findings published today inNeuron, a team of scientists at Boston Children's Hospital has developed a method to promote axon regrowth after injury. The team developed a therapeutic cocktail of molecules, which they administered tomicewith either a spinal cordinjuryor stroke and observed that the mice were able to recoverfine motor skills. "In our lab for the first time we have a treatment that allowed the spinal cord injury and the stroke model to regain functional recovery," says senior author on the paper Zhigang He, PhD, of Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He's team designed the mixture by building off some of their earlier collaborative work with Dr. Joshua Sanes group at Harvard, in optical nerve injury, when they had observed that the combination of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and a protein called osteopontin (OPN) promoted nerve regrowth and vision improvement in optically-injured mice. Regaining function after spinal cord injury To investigate whether this combination would influence functional recovery, the team studied amouse modelof spinal cord injury to one side of the body. … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy doesn’t stop 4-H’er from showing sheep – Agri News

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2017

INDIANAPOLIS He may have trouble walking due to his cerebral palsy and have to use a walker or crutches whenever he goes somewhere, but that doesnt stop Cooper Gretencord from showing sheep. It just means he has to show in a little different way. Gretencord, who is a seven-year 4-H member, said that he loves to show because of the competition and the opportunity he gets to make friends. 4-H has taught me responsibility, and it helps get me ready for life, he said. Although his cerebral palsy affects his body and ability to walk, Gretencord doesnt let that serve as an excuse to stop him from doing the activities that he wants to do. When showing sheep, another individual goes into the arena with him and serves as the dedicated setter throughout the course of the show, but Gretencord uses a halter on his sheep, so even though he has to take his walker into the show ring, he still can lead his sheep himself. Even though I have cerebral palsy, I enjoy playing sports and doing 4-H. If I had to choose, I would pick 4-H over sports, Gretencord said. His parents, Denny and Lisa Gretencord, encourage him … Continue reading

U.S. DOD to Start New Trial with Pluristem’s PLX-R18 Cell Therapy … – Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2017

The U.S. Department of Defenses (DOD) Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) is to undertake a pilot study in nonhuman primates (NHP) evaluating Pluristem Therapeutics PLX-R18 as a treatment for acute radiation syndrome (ARS) prior to and within the first 24 hours of radiation exposure. The AFRRI is part of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS). Pluristems PLX-R18 is an off-the-shelf placental expanded (PLX) cell therapy product generated from placenta-derived mesenchymal-like adherent stromal cells. The cells are designed to release a combination of therapeutic proteins to help treat bone marrow that has been damaged due to ARS, or as a result of cancer, cancer therapy, or immune-mediated bone marrow failure. Last month, Pluristem reported positive data from an ongoing Phase II-equivalent NHP trial carried out by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which also investigated PLX-R18 cells as a treatment for ARS. The results confirmed that therapy increased survival rates in irradiated NHP animals. The NIAID study is evaluating PLX-R18 administration 24 hours after radiation exposure. The prospective AFRRI study will evaluate therapy given prior to or within the first 24 hours of radiation exposure, which Pluristem points out is a timeframe that will be … Continue reading

Posted: Published on August 19th, 2017

Capricor Therapeuticsrecently shared anupdateofthe companys quarterly financial results and operational highlights, including positive results for the ongoing HOPE study with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients. The Phase I/II HOPE study (NCT02485938) is assessing the safety and tolerabilityofinvestigational cardiac cell therapyCAP-1002 in boys and young men with DMD. Results from the trials first six months showed that patients treated with CAP-1002 experienced significant improvements in cardiac and upper limb functions compared with patients under standard care. Researchers are assessing patient outcomes with lab tests, physical exams, and electrocardiograms, and by measuring coronary blood flow and major cardiac events. The study also will measure patient responses on the Performance of Upper Limb (PUL) scale, a tool developed by experts to assess upper limb function in DMD patients; with spirometry; and in a test that measures how far patients can walk in six minutes. In April, we reported positive interim results from our ongoing HOPE-Duchenne clinical trial which have ignited the interest of patients, advocates and thought leaders who constitute the greater Duchenne muscular dystrophy community. These results are particularly notable given the patients advanced disease as approximately 70% of trial participants were wheelchair-dependent at entry, Linda Marbn, PhD, president and CEO of Capricor, … Continue reading

Eric Dane spent six seasons playing Dr. Mark Sloan onGreys Anatomy, but the actor says he barely watched any episodes of the hit ABC series. Ever. In a recent interview with HuffPost at Build Series, Dane revealed, I watched three episodes of the show while I was on it. After all, he said, I was there when it happened, so I didnt need to see it. So, its safe to say he doesnt keep up with the series now. But he does keep in touch with some of his former cast members, including Ellen Pompeo and Justin Chambers. Hes also still friendly with series creator Shonda Rhimes. Shondas great, he said.Im still friends with her to this day. One thing that you do with Shonda is that you dont deviate. Thats one of the biggest lessons you learn is that you stick to the script. Over the course of the last season, DeLuca began developing strong feelings for Jo, and it appears theres a very real possibility for a deeper connection between the two doctors. DeLucas attempts to confess his feelings to Jo havent gone so well for him, Gianniotti recently told ET. But personally speaking, I think he jumped the gun a little bit. Shes fresh out of this relationship [with Alex]. I think she just needs a little time to process everything.
