Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

LONDON, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Gene therapy, which aims to patch faulty genes with working DNA, has been a long time in development. The following are major milestones: 1972 - Researchers first suggest gene therapy as a treatment for genetic diseases but oppose its use in humans "for the foreseeable future", pending greater understanding of the technology. 1990 - A four-year-old girl with severe immunodeficiency became the first patient to undergo gene therapy in the United States. 1999 - American patient Jesse Gelsinger dies following a gene therapy experiment, setting the field back several years as U.S. regulators put some experiments on hold. 2002-03 - Cases of leukaemia are diagnosed in French children undergoing gene therapy in a further blow to the field. 2003 - The world's first gene therapy is approved in China for the treatment of head and neck cancer. 2007 - Doctors carry out the world's first operation using gene therapy to treat a serious sight disorder caused by a genetic defect. 2012 - Europe approves Glybera, the first gene therapy in a Western market, for an ultra-rare blood disorder. 2016 - Europe approves Strimvelis for a very rare type of immunodeficiency. 2017 or 2018 - The … Continue reading

Pfizer’s push into gene therapy adds more jobs in Sanford – News & Observer

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is expanding its facilities in Sanford to accommodate the companys push into gene therapy. The state Department of Commerce announced earlier this week that Pfizer would invest $100 million in the site and create 40 jobs there within three years. The average annual salary for the new positions will be $97,500, much higher than Lee Countys average annual wage of $38,250. If it meets those goals, Wyeth Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pfizers, will receive a $250,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund and a local incentive of up to $1,412,715 over five years. The announcement comes a week after Gov. Roy Cooper visited Pfizers facilities in Sanford and a year after Pfizer bought Bamboo Therapeutics, a Chapel Hill startup. Pfizer also bought Bamboos gene therapy manufacturing facility, which Bamboo had acquired from UNC-Chapel Hill in January, 2016. Gene therapy is an emerging technology that attacks the disorder by repairing mutated genes. Pfizer will use technology to introduce genetic material into a patients body so as to compensate for defective or missing genes. Place a cap on IVF costs and the NHS could double the number of treatments – The Guardian

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

One of the founding principles of our NHS is a commitment to providing fair and equal access to healthcare. It is this principle that ignites such passion in us all when it is threatened or belittled. Yet the recent revelation that 13 areas of England have restricted or completely halted IVF treatment, with a further eight consulting on similar steps, shows that we are failing in this commitment. The World Health Organisation defines infertility as a disease. And guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommend that women under 40 with fertility problems should be offered three full cycles of IVF on the NHS. But more than 80% of patients do not currently receive this. Those who have been through IVF treatment know that it is often a difficult and emotional process, and requires deep commitment to having a child. Critics claim infertility is not a life-threatening condition. Yet fertility treatment creates life, and in my mind that is just as vital to our society. By denying NHS funding for IVF treatment we are creating inequality, where only those with the resources are able to fight for that choice to become parents. As an NHS consultant, … Continue reading

Swadlincote couple’s anger at ‘heartless’ plans to cut IVF treatment … – Burton Mail

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

A Swadlincote couple who have been trying to have a baby for six years have slammed plans to cut NHS IVF treatment in some areas across the country, saying the move is "playing with people's lives". Chris and Kelly Chambers are unable to conceive naturally after a number of health issues. The couple, who are desperate for a baby, say a recent announcement that some areas in England will cut back on IVF treatment, is shattering for those who have no other choice. The couple have endured heartbreak and say they have been on an emotional rollercoaster on their journey to complete their family. It comes after Kelly, 32, who have suffered three ectopic pregnancies which have resulted in the removal of both of her fallopian tubes, spoke out after charity Fertility Network UK warned of stricter access criteria for NHS IVF. They are not entitled to have IVF treatment on the NHS because Chris has two children from a previous relationship. To qualify for treatment in the UK couples cannot already have children, even from previous relationships. In a new move, Richmond clinical commissioning group (CCG) in south-west London is introducing tighter access criteria for NHS IVF treatment while … Continue reading

It’s twins! Third time lucky for cancer survivor Ryan and fiance Chris … – The Sunday Post

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

TWO men have beaten incredible odds to become the first Scottish same-sex couple to be expectant dads by groundbreaking IVF treatment and they are having twins. Ryan Walker and Chris Watson are expecting the patter of tiny feet within the next six weeks after a Scots surrogate mother stepped in to help them realise their dream of becoming fathers. Incredibly, the surrogate mum is also in a same-sex relationship and decided to help after she had a child using a donor. We are absolutely thrilled to have not just one baby coming but two, Ryan, 32, told The Sunday Post last night. It feels like we have won the Lottery. The engaged couple, from Falkirk, were turned down by several IVF clinics in Scotland for the cutting-edge fertility treatment because they are in a gay relationship. They were eventually taken on by the GCRM clinic in Glasgow and, after two heart-breaking failed attempts at becoming dads, they were given the happy news in January that the surrogate mother was having a boy and a girl. It was disappointing that in this day and age some clinics declined us for treatment because we are a same-sex couple, Chris, 28, said. But … Continue reading

Cornwall women losing out in IVF ‘postcode lottery’ | Cornwall Live – Cornwall Live

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

Comments(1) Women in Devon and Cornwall who need help to have a baby are the losers in a "postcode lottery" for NHS fertility treatment, it has emerged. A fertility expert has warned that plans to cut back on in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment in some areas of England amount to "deliberate inequality". The charity Fertility Network UK has warned of stricter access criteria and plans to cut NHS IVF. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) guidelines say the NHS should provide three full cycles of IVF treatment for women aged under 40 who have failed to get pregnant after two years of trying. Clinical commissioning groups in Devon and Cornwall already offer only one free attempt for women under 40. Susan Seenan, chief executive of Fertility Network UK, said: "NICE recommends that up to three cycles of IVF treatment are offered to those eligible. "The recommendations are based on cost as well as clinical effectiveness and by offering only one cycle Devon and Cornwall are going completely against national guidance. "Infertility has a serious and lasting impact on all those affected and fertility problems do not just affect people physically, but mentally too: our recent survey showed that … Continue reading

(Photo courtesy Scott Paulus with Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club) MILWAUKEE (WLUK) -- Sunday marked another milestone for a Fox Valley man as he threw the first pitch at Sunday's Brewers game. With a baseball in Lucas Lindner's right hand, he moved his arm back and threw the ball right into the catcher's mitt with ease. The crowd cheered and Lindner couldn't help but smile. He suffered from a severe spinal cord injury after he crashed his truck last year. The crash left him paralyzed from the chest down. Thanks to an experimental stem cell treatment called AST-OPC1, Lindner gained mobility in his arms, hands and fingers. The procedure took place at the Medical College of Wisconsin. FOX 11 did a story on Lindner last year. "Throwing out the first pitch at a Major League game is not something I could have imagined a year ago. I want to show everyone that there is hope that spinal cord injury patients can regain function. I am looking forward to going back to school, pursuing my dream of working in the IT field and living independently … Continue reading

Walker helps Brewers knock off Reds 7-4 – La Crosse Tribune

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

MILWAUKEE (AP) When Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell found out the Brewers had traded for Neil Walker, he immediately wanted to know if he could get the veteran infielder into the lineup for Sundays game against Cincinnati. After collecting just 3 hours of sleep, Walker arrived in plenty of time to collect a pair of hits in his Milwaukee debut, helping the Brewers to a 7-4 victory over the Reds. It is easier, in my opinion, to get thrown in the fire and see how it goes, Walker said. I was happy to not be out of the lineup for two straight days. Domingo Santana hit a three-run homer for Milwaukee, and Ryan Braun had two hits and drove in a run. The Brewers took the last two games of the weekend series after dropping six in a row. Walker came over in a trade with the New York Mets on Saturday. He started at third base in place of the banged-up Travis Shaw and went 2-for-4 with a run scored. He played a position that he hasnt played a ton this year and made some very nice plays, Counsell said. He handled it very professionally like hes been over there. … Continue reading

GREEN BAY, Wis. Brett Goode had quite an eventful week. Returning to the Green Bay Packers was only part of it. Last Monday morning, the veteran long snapper an unsigned free agent despite spending the past nine seasons with the Packers was still unemployed when his wife, Monica, went into labor with the couples second child. Shortly after daughter Blakely arrived, Goode was on a plane from his home in Arkansas for a tryout with the New York Jets, one of a number of NFL teams that had called expressing interest in him. Like, the baby was born and I left, Goode said Sunday, following his first practice with the Packers. My wife is a good wife. Goode said he had been monitoring the Packers special teams issues kicker Mason Crosby had missed six of 11 field-goal attempts during the teams annual Family Night practice on Aug. 5 and was still hoping for a call from his old team, as hed received at the end of training camp last year. Sure enough, the phone rang late in the week and by Saturday, Goode was on his way back to Green Bay, having signed to compete with rookie Derek Hart for … Continue reading

Did the Prophet Muhammad Plagiarise Ancient Greek …

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

[Dowload PDF from here] Pre-release version 0.5 February 2011 Commentators assert that the quranic view on human development was plagiarised from ancient Greek (Hellenic) embryology. They specifically claim that the Prophet Muhammad plagiarised the works of the ancient Greek philosopher and polymath Aristotle, and the 2nd century physician and philosopher Galen. To respond to this accusation, this section will articulate the mainstream Islamic scholarly position that the Prophet did not plagiarise or borrow ideas from Hellenic medicine. Does similarity imply plagiarism? To address the contention that the Prophet Muhammad borrowed or plagiarised Hellenic views on embryology, the philosophical implications of inferring plagiarism from similarity must be discussed. If there is a similarity between two things X and Y, to make the inference that X copied Y or Y copied X would require some form of evidence. Otherwise, the argument will be fallacious as it will commit the fallacy of argumentum ad ignoratiam, in other words, arguing from ignorance. Take the following example into consideration: there are two patent applications that have arrived at the patent office in the UK. The patent officer examines both applications and they appear to have a similar design for a particular product. Can the patent … Continue reading
