The Anatomy Of An Oil Market Evolution, Its Sustainability, And Consequences – Seeking Alpha

Posted: Published on August 11th, 2017

World oil markets have experienced a fundamental transition in recent years, making the practice of oil price manipulation to be elusive. In the past, oil prices were basically supported by the market being undersupplied, together with the specter of peak oil. Oil market paradigms were based on declining production in countries composing the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), contrasting with rising global demand mostly among non-OECD countries. In the face of such production declines, OPEC and Eurasia (Russia and the former United Soviet Social Republics, USSR) pegged their production to quotas more so associated with global supply than global demand. The resulting anticipation was for a state of secular market undersupply to simply continue, pushing oil prices higher. However, oil prices collapsed. Market expectations were defeated with the U.S. dramatically increasing production. The production increase in the U.S. shocked markets by demonstrating the capacity to supply 78% of the total global oil demand increase from 2008 to 2015 - something never before experienced from a country or entity in the oil markets. OPEC and Eurasia market quotas, associated with global supply, cemented an oversupplied dynamic. This oversupply was once thought to be self-limiting, with U.S. producers simply having … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy: Will Jackson and Maggie really get together? – EW.com (blog)

Posted: Published on August 11th, 2017

A new romance might be in the air when Greys Anatomy returns. After the season 13 finale hinted at a potential romance for Jackson (Jesse Williams) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary), fans of the ABC medical drama have spent the hiatus wondering if Japril is out and Jaggie Mackson? is in. April (Sarah Drew) pointed out the potential in the finale, telling Maggie she believes her ex-husband and the cardio doc who grew close when Jackson treated Maggies dying mother have feelings for one another. What April said to her literally had not crossed her mind, so I think its a question shes grappling with whether theres any truth to that, and if there is, what to do with it, and if theres not, how to manage if theres truth for Jackson in that, McCreary tells EW. Shes on fertile ground trying basically to find out whether April was onto something shes unaware of. When Greys Anatomy returns this fall, the series will pick up right where the finale left off following the hospital explosion, which means Aprils words will still be ringing in Maggies ears. So, will Maggie take a shot with Jackson? The truth is that still remains to … Continue reading

Genetic risk factors for autism may affect family size – Spectrum

Posted: Published on August 11th, 2017

Age effect: Men and women at genetic risk for autism tend to become parents relatively late in life. Ghislain & Marie David de Lossy / iStock People who carry risk factors for autism but do not have the condition tend to have fewer children and have them later in life than do people at lower risk, according to a new study1. The study of more than 90,000 people focuses on common genetic variants, which occur in at least 1 percent of the population. Certain combinations of these variants are thought to increase the risk of autism. The study suggests that variants linked to autism also affect whether and when people have children. For instance, having variants that lead to social difficulties might make it hard to find a mate. It is clear that the brain is an important reproductive organ, says lead researcher Kri Stefnsson, founder of deCODE Genetics in Iceland. The findings, published 13 June in Nature Communications, may help to explain why autism is more prevalent among children who have older parents. Previous studies have suggested that sperm from older fathers is more prone to spontaneous mutations that boost autism risk. The new work supports another explanation: that people … Continue reading

InDex Pharmaceuticals Receives Orphan-drug Designation for … – Markets Insider

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2017

STOCKHOLM, August 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- InDex Pharmaceuticals Holding AB (publ) today announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted orphan-drug designation for the drug candidate cobitolimod for treatment of ulcerative colitis in pediatric patients. "We are pleased that the FDA has granted orphan-drug designation for cobitolimod for treatment of ulcerative colitis in children, which may provide seven years of market exclusivity in this indication on the US market," said Peter Zerhouni, CEO of InDex Pharmaceuticals. "The decision shows the medical need for new therapeutic options for this patient population and gives InDex additional opportunities to interact with the FDA." Cobitolimod in brief Cobitolimod is a new type of drug that can help patients with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis back to a normal life. It is a so-called Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9) agonist, that can provide an anti-inflammatory effect locally in the large intestine, which may induce mucosal healing and relief of the clinical symptoms in ulcerative colitis. Cobitolimod has achieved clinical proof-of-concept in moderate to severe active ulcerative colitis, with a very favorable safety profile. Data from four placebo-controlled clinical trials indicate that cobitolimod has statistically significant effects on those endpoints that are most relevant … Continue reading

If You Live in a City, Science Says You’re More at Risk of These Incurable Diseases – Reader’s Digest

Inflammatory bowel disease refers to a miserable set of symptoms that dont usually get discussed in polite company. IBD is one of the common sources of stomach distressand it can be responsible for abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and bloody stool, fatigue, and weight loss. The most common sources of IBD are Crohns Disease and ulcerative colitis, and cases are on the rise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now a recent study suggests that rural livingespecially during the first five years of a childs lifeprovides significant protection from these conditions. Lead study author Eric I. Benchimol MD, PhD, and colleagues relied on health data collected during surveys of virtually all residents of the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. In 2011, the provinces had a combined population of more than 19 million peopleand 45,567 of them had either Crohns Disease or ulcerative colitis. Taras Mikhailyuk/shutterstock Once Dr. Benchimol divided the groups into rural versus urban, he found that the incidence of IBD for country folk was 30.72 per 100,000; in cities, the rate was 33.16 per 100,000. In addition, rural patients were diagnosed at an older age than urban patients. The study, which was conducted … Continue reading

RNA-targeting CRISPR could yield treatments for Huntington’s, ALS – FierceBiotech

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2017

Researchers from the University of California, San Diego have used a new version of the gene editing technology CRISPR to fix problems in RNA, rather than to change DNA, a promising step for a group of diseases, including Huntingtons and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, that have no cure. CRISPR uses the Cas9 enzyme and a "guide" RNA to snip out mutations in DNA, but until recently, it has not been used to target RNA. After using the method to track RNA in live cells last year, the UC San Diego team is now correcting mistakes in RNA that lead to microsatellite repeat expansion diseases. In these disorders, too many repeats in RNA sequences causes RNA to clump together in cells, preventing them from producing essential proteins. The team tested their RNA-targeted Cas9 (RCas9) system on laboratory modelsand found that the method cleared 95% or more of the RNA clumpscalled focirelated to myotonic dystrophy, one type of ALS and Huntington's disease. It also eliminated 95% of errant repeat RNAs in cells taken from patients with myotonic dystrophy. The findings are published in Cell. "We are really excited about this work because we not only defined a new potential therapeutic mechanism for CRISPR-Cas9, … Continue reading
