Don’t fear the rise of superbabies. Worry about who will own genetic engineering technology. – Chicago Tribune

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

Seen any clone armies in your backyard lately? Probably not. This might surprise you if you are old enough to remember the ethical panic that greeted the birth of Dolly the sheep, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell, in Scotland 21 years ago. The cloned creature set off a crazy overreaction, with fears of clone armies, re-creating the dead, and a host of other horrors, monsters, abuses and terrors none of which has come to pass. That is why it is so important, amid all the moral hand-wringing about what could happen as human genetic engineering emerges, to keep our ethical eye on the right ball. Freaking out over impending superbabies and mutant humans with the powers of comic book characters is not what is needed. An international team of scientists, led by researchers at the Oregon Health and Science University, has used genetic engineering on human sperm and a pre-embryo. The group is doing basic research to figure out if new forms of genetic engineering might be able to prevent or repair terrible hereditary diseases. How close are they to making freakish superpeople using their technology? About as close as we are to traveling intergalactically using current … Continue reading

We’re finally understanding how we can repair spinal cord injuries … – ScienceAlert

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

There's nothing simple about repairing spinal cord injuries. But new research has pinned down how one of the most cutting edge techniques works, and in particular how the body can repair itself with a little prompting from surgeons. As well as giving experts more insight into existing treatments, it's hoped the study will lead to techniques for tackling other types of damage to the nervous system perhaps even in cases where the spinal cord itself is severed. The team from King's College London in the UK focussed on a recently developed method for reconnecting sensory neurons to the spinal cord after traumatic injuries, looking at how the repair happens on a cellular level, and the way in which small neural offshoots grow to reconnect broken circuits in the body. "The strategy of encouraging new growth from spinal neurons could potentially be of use in other injuries of the nervous system," says one of the researchers, Thomas Carlstedt. The spinal cord handles both motor neurons for muscle movement, and sensory neurons for pain, touch, and so on, enabling all the body's nerve cells to communicate with the brain. A new medical technique places torn roots deeper in the spinal cord. Credit: … Continue reading

Blind man with cerebral palsy sues Keys resort over ADA claim … – Miami Herald

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

A legally blind Miami man with cerebral palsy who has filed about 70 similar lawsuits is suing Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key in federal court, claiming its website fails to allow him access. Juan Carlos Gil wants Hawks Cay to redo its website so that screen-reader software he uses can be used to access it. Gil also seeks compensation for his time and suffering, saying he tried to plan a vacation to the Keys resort but was stymied by the websites limitations. No price can be put on the plaintiffs inability to shop for himself, his attorney Scott Dinin of Miami wrote in the 32-page complaint against Hawks Cay. Gil, who filed the suit at U.S. District Court in Key West on July 18, recently won a similar lawsuit against the Winn-Dixie company after a two-day trial last month. A judge found that the grocery chains website is an extension of its physical locations and therefore subject to the Americans with Disabilities Act. In that case, filed in Miami federal court in July 2016, Judge Robert Scola Jr. ordered Winn-Dixie to change its website as a remedy and limited Gil to attorney fees. Gil has been on 500-600 other … Continue reading

Patients nationwide visit Louisiana for groundbreaking brain damage treatment – WBRZ

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

NEW ORLEANS - Hundreds of people from across the globe are traveling to Louisiana with hopes that a doctor's treatment will help heal brain damage in their children. Baton Rouge native Kelsie LeBlanc says her son, Kohen Blades, contracted bacterial meningitis and viral encephalitis after walking in waist-deep water during the August flood. "I remember thinking to myself, 'God please let my baby be okay,'" LeBlanc said. "I told myself 'If I have to ask God to let my baby be okay, then something's wrong." LeBlanc and Kohen visited Dr. Paul Harch's clinic in Marrero. Dr. Harch claims specifically dosing oxygen to certain areas of the brain can help promote growth in tissue. "Centuries or more, we have felt the dictum has been that there's nothing you can do for a brain injury, and it's clearly wrong," Dr. Harch said. Now, hundreds of patients visit his clinic for the treatment. However, Dr. Harch said the demand is so great, many families are often left struggling to find a place to stay when they visit, since the Ronald McDonald House is full. As reported by WWL, Dr. Harch is hoping people will offer the families a place to stay, transportation, and … Continue reading

Meg Farris, WWLTV 10:16 PM. EDT July 31, 2017 NEW ORLEANS, LA. - Hundreds of people from around the world are calling a local doctor in hopes his treatment will help heal brain damage in their children. And now they are asking for your help with a place to stay during treatment. Since the 1980s, two local doctors have been doing research, showing that hyperbaric oxygen treatments can help heal brain damage, especially when done right after the injury. Many people have traveled here for the treatment, but there are still doctors who question its effectiveness. After publicity of the remarkable recovery of a toddler who nearly drowned, the clinic has been inundated with calls for help, but the families coming here for two months, have nowhere to stay. Megan Lasure vividly remembers when her life changed forever last Christmas time. When she stepped away momentarily, leaving her teenager to watch, her youngest of five children, three-year-old Sam, climbed over a locked fence and nearly drowned in a relative's pool. She remembers one of her older son's reaction. "AndI will never ever forget the look on his face and all he said was, 'Mom,' butI knew something was horribly wrong," … Continue reading

‘Missing Links’ to a Corrective Mechanism for a Severe Muscular Dystrophy – LWW Journals

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

ARTICLE IN BRIEF In animal models of congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A, researchers identified two proteins that, when working together, strengthened muscle and prolonged their lifespan from weeks to more than two years. The proteins could be the missing links to correcting the defect in this form of muscular dystrophy, the research team said. Researchers genetically engineered mice with a congenital form of muscular dystrophy to express two smaller proteins that, when combined, strengthened muscle and prolonged their lifespan from weeks to more than two years, according to a June 28 study published in Science Translational Medicine. The research team, led by Markus A. Regg, PhD, a professor at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel in Switzerland, said the proteins could be the missing links researchers have been looking for to correct the defect in congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A, a common and severe form of the disease that is caused by mutations in LAMA2, the gene encoding laminin-alpha 2, the heavy chain of the heterotrimeric basement membrane protein laminin-211. The two smaller engineered proteins mini-agrin (mag) and alpha-LNNd seem to act as linkers in the mice to restore defective connections between muscle fibers and the supportive sheath, the … Continue reading

Taking too many antibiotics to treat eczema may worsen your condition – Miami Herald

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

Recently, dermatologists and medical students from across the nation attended the 37th Annual Advances in Dermatology meeting held at New York University. Dr. Seth Orlow, chairman of the Department of Dermatology at New York University School of Medicine, presented on the connection between atopic dermatitis, more commonly known as eczema, and the skins complex microbiome. One key aspect of Orlows presentation involved the often misunderstood relationship between eczema and a specific strain of bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. Numerous studies have found that people with eczema nearly always have a much higher concentration of S. aureus bacteria living on their skin than those without this common condition. In fact, the more severe the eczema, the greater the amount of S. aureus that seems to be present on the skin. These findings lead many to believe that this bacteria causes eczema but this can lead to overuse of irritating antibacterial soaps and overuse of antibiotics. Orlow tells Dermatology Times that focusing on S. aureus as the sole cause of atopic dermatitis is problematic, as the more likely scenario is that the underlying inflammation of this skin condition is what leads to an overabundance of S. aureus colonization on the skin. As a … Continue reading

Eczema and psoriasis treatment: THIS therapy could reduce the need for creams and tablets – Express.co.uk

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2017

Now, experts have said routine prescribing of UV light treatment for severe skin conditions could significantly reduce the use of steroid creams and tablets, according to new research from the University of Dundee. Patients who experience the most severe forms of diseases such as psoriasis or eczema can find their lives affectged by their conditions. Steroid creams are frequently prescribed but these can cause quite serious side effects and can prove inadequate to bring the disease under control. In such instances patients may be referred to a dermatologist for more intensive treatment, which may take the forms of pills, injections or filtered UV light, known as phototherapy. Experts from Dundee Universitys School of Medicine, examined the outcomes of 1800 patients with severe psoriasis who received UV treatment over a six-year period. They found that three-quarters of patients experienced significant improvements in their condition and that the need for steroid creams was reduced by 25 per cent. Phototherapy involves safe, controlled delivery of narrow wavebands of ultraviolet radiation in specially constructed cabins. It has been known to help skin disease sufferers for decades but this study is the first to demonstrate that its use can reduce the need for steroids in … Continue reading

"I feel good," Diekman said. "I don't know how my arm strength is, but I feel good." The Rangers will see how Diekman recovers from the session before they determine his next step. He could get another batting practice session, or he could be assigned to the Minor Leagues on a medical rehabilitation assignment. Diekman said he is ready for a rehab assignment, but pitching coach Doug Brocail said that is still to be determined. "I want to see how he responds and get everybody's opinion," Brocail said. "I'm not putting a timeline on this. I want to make sure we get this thing right." Diekman pitched to Ryan Rua, Mike Napoli and Drew Robinson. He wasn't expected to throw as many as 31 pitches, but the goal was to push him physically so they can see how he responds from the session. "I need that arm to get tired so we can build it back up," Brocail said. Rangers trade for slot money: The Rangers have acquired an extra $500,000 in international bonus pool money from the Orioles in exchange for Minor League infielder Brallan Roberts. The Rangers were allotted $4.75 million for the yearlong international signing period that … Continue reading
