Anatomy of a Grave-Hunt – Big Think

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2017

Where exactly is the grave of Andreas Vesalius? This historical mystery, at the unlikely intersection of anatomy, archeology and cartography, could soon be solved. But not without a final crowdfunding effort. It's a mystery tinged with irony. Vesalius (1514-1564) popularised autopsies and (unwittingly) kicked off the centuries-long trend of 'resurrectionism': snatching bodies for dissection by medical students. Now it's his own grave that scientists are after, and their search involves a studious postmortem of the landscape where he was buried, with ancient maps as material evidence. The search started some time before 2014, the 500th anniversary of Vesalius's birth. To celebrate that event, medical artist Pascale Pollier set out to reconstruct the face of Vesalius, from his actual skull a fitting tribute to the father of modern anatomy. But where was that skull? The historical record showed that Vesalius died on the Greek island of Zakynthos. And that's where the trail went cold. 16th-century map of Zakynthos, transposed on a topographically accurate modern map. It's fair to say that few scientists have been as consequential for the development of modern science in particular medical science as Vesalius. So how could his last resting place have been neglected, forgotten and ultimately … Continue reading

'Grey's Anatomy' Eric Dane says he's doing OK after bout with depression – Newsday

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2017

Eric Dane opened up Monday about his battle with depression, which caused him to take a hiatus earlier this year from his show The Last Ship. Id dealt with depression throughout my life, Dane, 44, who has publicly discussed his condition, said on NBCs Today. It was always manageable and I just felt like everybody kind of feels a little blue. But this just hit me like a truck. I had to take some time off I went away, I took care of it, and Im feeling great. Dane, who played Dr. Mark Sloan for six years on Greys Anatomy and stars as Capt. Tom Chandler on TNTs post-apocalyptic drama The Last Ship, explained he took time off from the show in April because I was dealing with some depression, which was kind of odd to me. I felt very conflicted about it because I didnt really feel like I had anything to be depressed about. And now I take a medication called Pristiq, which I thought just sounded like a good mood. And the depressions gone, he said, adding, Im doing OK. Pristiq, made by Pfizer, is a brand of the antidepressant desvenlafaxine, which balances levels of the brain … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Goal: Ola Kamara's Lefty Finish – Massive Report

Posted: Published on August 3rd, 2017

Welcome to Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal (or near goal) from the previous weeks Columbus Crew SC match. For match 23 on the 2017 MLS Season, we take a look at Ola Kamaras 15th minute left-footed goal that put Crew SC up 1-0 as part of the 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake on Saturday. Heres a look at the finish from the Columbus forward. After a disappointing, two red-card loss at the Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night, the Black & Gold found themselves clawing to keep pace in a tight Eastern Conference playoff race. Rookie Connor Maloney earned his first start as a professional, slotting in at right wing back. Crew SCs opening goal begins off of a clearance by Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman. Beckermans half-touch only clears the ball about 15 yards up the field. Captain Wil Trapp and Maloney are both in position to win Beckermans weak clearance. Trapp takes possession of the ball as Maloney heads to a wide position on the right flank. With a defender on his right hip, Trapp drops the ball back to center-back Nicolai Naess. Getting his first start since the 1-0 win at … Continue reading

MIAMI Bari Gold was never one for tutus. When she was 4, Roberta Gold gave in to her daughters competitive spirit and enrolled her in a local soccer program. While the rest of the girls picked daisies on the field, Bari played fiercely against her opponents. She joined a travel team at 9 and worked her way through school and club teams as a center back. The first time she was hit in the head with a ball last December, the varsity junior captain of the Palmetto Senior High School team complained of a headache but blamed it on dehydration. Two games later, she was hit in the head again. Bari, 17, couldnt read the words on her U.S. history test and even walked into the wrong classrooms the next day. It felt like I was dreaming, but all the time, she said. Just two weeks ago, she was clocked in the head for a third time at recruiting camp and had to fly home. While researchers, the media and even Hollywood with the movie Concussion have spent time and money bringing brain injury to the forefront of medical discussions diagnosing and treating concussions in young athletes often remains a … Continue reading

Eye Movements May Be Key In Detecting Brain Injury, Concussion – HuffPost

Dr. Uzma Samadani, M.D., Ph.D. is paving the way for new eye-tracking diagnostic measures after a brain injury. I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Uzma Samadani speak at a Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance conference for professionals and was mesmerized by what she had to share regarding eye-tracking and the correlation to brain injury. I couldnt soak up enough of what she had to share that day, so I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to interview her for an article, and you might say I was even a little star-struck. You see my eye-tracking was my biggest complaint that no one bothered to acknowledge. Immediately after my fall that resulted in my traumatic brain injury (TBI), I knew my eyes werent quite right. In the beginning I wasnt even able to read the words on my computer screen, like when I was trying to find the local ER. Time passed, and I kept telling every doctor I saw that something wasnt quite right with my eyes. Eventually I was sent to a neuro ophthalmologist who did extensive testing, only to tell me that my eyes were fine. I continued struggling with my vision and went to my eye doctor, … Continue reading

Transgender man gives birth to baby boy. ‘Love is possible,’ he says. So is ‘being a loving family.’ – Washington Post

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2017

Trystan Reese, a transgender man, gave birth to a healthy boy on July 14 in Portland, Ore. (Amber Ferguson/The Washington Post) Trystan Reese and his partner, Biff Chaplow, were already seasoned parents when they decided last year that they wanted another child. Years earlier, they had adopted Chaplows niece and nephew after his sister was no longer able to take care of them. They raised the two children as their own, bringing them up in Los Angeles, where Reese and Chaplow worked in nonprofits, then moving the family to Portland, Ore., where they live now. Adoption was a taxing process, Reese said, and learning how to care for two toddlers ushered ina suite of new challenges and lifestyle changes, as it does for any parent. Butit was also eye-opening. After the dust settled, I just realized how much I loved our kids, Reese told The Washington Post, and how much room there was in our life for our family to grow. After trying for several months, Reese, a transgender man,got pregnant. And just weeks ago, he gave birth to a healthy baby boy. Reeseand Chaplow documented the pregnancy in blog posts and on social media, hoping to demystify what it … Continue reading

Newly approved MS drug changing treatment landscape – Fox News

Believe it or not, until 1993 there was no treatment available for multiple sclerosis (MS), with doctors turning to steroids to manage patients symptoms. But over the past several years, there's been an influx of new disease-modifying agents for MS, which affects more than two million people worldwide. "When MS therapeutics were new, there was a tendency to start with lower potency medications and escalate to a higher potency agent only if the patient with MS continued to worsen, Dr. Ellen Lathi, director of the Elliot Lewish Center in Wellesley, Mass., told Fox News. Now most MS specialists believe that it is best to start more potent medication earlier in the disease in many patients to avoid future disability. We know that once disability occurs, we can do little about it; it is best to treat as aggressively as needed to avoid this disability. Jud Ehrbar, of Manhattan, was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS nearly 20 years ago. At the time, the now-47-year-old was a drummer in a band, and had started teaching math in public school. He eventually sacrificed both as his symptoms worsened over the years. MICHIGAN BABY FACING LIFE-THREATENING DISEASE SIMILAR TO CHARLIE GARD'S DIAGNOSIS "Eating was a … Continue reading
