The Microbial Mystery Behind Eczema – Huffington Post Canada

Posted: Published on July 10th, 2017

With the summer heat, many Canadians no doubt will be replacing those long pants, shirts, and sweaters with shorts, tees, and swimwear. However, for up to one-sixth of our population, this choice may not come as easy as we think. It's because they suffer from a disease known officially as atopic dermatitis although most of us call it eczema. Eczema is a difficult disease to pin down. The symptoms range from itchy rashes to cracked, oozing skin. This condition can be a mere annoyance but in severe cases, it can impact one's ability to function in society. The same difficulties can be said for treatment. Some can manage the condition with hygiene while others may require prescription medications. When it comes to the cause, eczema has proven to be an enigma. Researchers have known for years the ailment arises due to a change in one's immunity. For some reason, the body tends to overreact in certain areas of the body leading to the symptoms. This explanation is the basis for numerous pharmacological treatments known to calm the immune response and reduce or eliminate the ailment. While therapeutic options may be helpful for those suffering, for public health officials, there is … Continue reading

Its spontaneous; fun; adrenaline-inducing; and, for those living with neurological and developmental disorders, potentially life-changing. Equine-assisted therapy, otherwise known as hippotherapy, is a long-existing form of therapy that utilizes horses as a vehicle for facilitating improvement in the motor skills of the neurologically troubled, such as those who suffer from cerebral palsy, autism, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, down syndrome and other ailments. According to a study by the United Nations, up to one billion people in the world suffer from neurological disorders, with the population of the earth being seven billion. With hippotherapy, the lives of many living with mental illness have the potential to change, according to a Grand Valley State University professor, Beth Macauley, who teaches communication sciences and disorders and has been studying and practicing hippotherapy for years. Her work started when she was growing up on her parents farm. She said she always had a penchant for working with people with disabilities and claimed to have the horse gene from her parents. She said after she got her first riding lesson, her fate was sealed. … Continue reading

CANFIELD, Ohio - A group of Harley Davidson riders didn't let anything, including Monday's rain, get in the way of trying to bring smiles to the faces of a local family. Friends and loved ones of Donald Nitzsky, who passed away last week from cerebral palsy, gathered to say their goodbyes. "He had a life expectancy of three and he lived to 32," said Donald Nitzsky's sister Olivia Aikins. Motorcycles and bright colors are what brought smiles like this one to the face of 32 year-old Donald Nitzsky. "Certain colors and motorcycles kind of seemed to be his thing. He always smiled when he seen one. We actually had a big poster above his bed that he had that he to look at. It was bright orange and it had black in it and lights. He always smiled when he seen them," said Donald Nitzsky's sister Olivia Aikins. "He spent most of his life in a wheel chair, all of his life and he loved motorcycles, two wheels, hot rods, you name it. If it had wheels on it, he loved it," said Donald's cousin James Jones. While the disability has impaired his lower body, he's still got full mobility in his upper body and he's used his talents to earnseveral medals at different competitive levels.Though he uses a cane to get from place to place, he stands at the table and even though he doesn't move much, it's rare that the ball gets past him. "I don't let it stop me from doing nothing," he said. "Nothing." On Thursday afternoon, Brown made a stop at the Forest View Senior Village in North Tonawanda to give a table tennis demonstration to some of the residents. He came at the request of employee MaryBeth McClaren, who has known Brown since 2000, when he helped coach her son in the sport of table tennis. Brown got his start playing locally in the Rochester area, specifically with the Genesee Valley Table Tennis Club, where he's the only handicapped player. He eventually found … Continue reading

Beach mishaps can cause broken bones or paralysis – Santa Rosa Press Gazette

Posted: Published on July 10th, 2017

By Press Gazette contributor PENSACOLA Every year, millions of people visit U.S. beaches during the summer. However, many people are unaware of the dangers capable of turning a vacation day into a medical emergency. During the summer, Sacred Heart Hospital neurosurgeon Dr. Samuel Critides and his colleagues see patients who sustain spinal cord injuries from diving headfirst into the water. People who sustain these types of injuries go to Sacred Heart Hospital for emergency surgery and receive treatment in the Level II Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center. Its the areas only hospital equipped to treat these injuries. Diving is one of the most preventable causes of spinal cord injuries, Critides says. The public is aware of the dangers of diving into a shallow pool, but many dont think twice about diving into a wave at the beach. The depth of the water on the shoreline can be deceiving. A shore break can cause waves to break directly on the wet sand, causing a rapid transition from deep to shallow water. According to the National Ocean Service, both small and high waves can be equally as unpredictable and dangerous. The power of a shore break can cause injuries to extremities and … Continue reading

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Scholar Rock, a biotechnology company focused on discovering and developing drugs that selectively target growth factors in the disease microenvironment, today announced the presentation of data from its SRK-015 antibody program, in collaboration with The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a Center of Excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, that demonstrate beneficial effects in a preclinical model of spinal cord injury. The study results, presented at the 35th Annual National Neurotrauma Symposium, held July 9-12th in Snowbird, UT, revealed that the Companys proprietary antibody, which possesses a unique ability to selectively block intramuscular activation of myostatin, improved key characteristics of muscle pathology that result from severe contusion injury to the spinal cord. More specifically, the antibody decreased muscle atrophy, educed fat infiltration into muscle, and improved muscle function. SRK-015 is Scholar Rocks lead antibody drug candidate which is initially being developed for the improvement of muscle strength and function in patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). We appreciated our fruitful interaction with the leadership and scientists of the Scholar Rock team, enabling the exploration of an innovative therapeutic approach to spinal cord injury. Cholesterol biosynthesis inhibitor RO 48-8071 reduces progesterone receptor expression and inhibits progestin … – Dove Medical Press

Yayun Liang,1,2,* Sandy Goyette,1,2,* Salman M Hyder1,2 1Department of Biomedical Sciences, 2Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, USA *These authors contributed equally to this work Abstract: Clinical trials and studies have shown that postmenopausal women undergoing combination hormone replacement therapy containing estrogen and progestin have an increased risk of breast cancer compared with women taking estrogen or placebo alone. Using animal models, we have previously shown that synthetic progestins, including medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), which is widely used clinically, accelerate breast cancer tumor growth and promote metastasis. Furthermore, we have found that MPA elevates CD44 protein expression and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity, two markers of cancer stem cells (CSCs), and increases mammosphere formation, another hallmark of stem cells, in hormone-dependent T47-D human breast cancer cells. Herein, we show that RO 48-8071 (RO), an inhibitor of cholesterol synthesis, reduced MPA-induced CD44 protein expression in two hormone-dependent human breast cancer cell lines, T47-D and BT-474. Because we have previously shown that MPA induction of CD44 is progesterone receptor (PR) dependent, we examined ROs effects on PR protein and mRNA expressions in T47-D cells. PR mRNA levels remained unchanged after RO treatment; however, RO significantly reduced the protein expression of both … Continue reading
