Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

Submitted information LIMA Employers in the greater West Central Ohio region will collect $33 million in rebates from the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation in checks that will be mailed beginning next week. BWC Administrator/CEO Sarah Morrison, in Lima to present a ceremonial check to local business leaders, said employers are free to spend their rebates as they wish, but she hopes they will consider investing in workplace safety. We work with employers all over Ohio to prevent injuries and illness in the workplace, and they will tell you that investing in safety is a wise business decision, said Morrison, speaking at a press conference at the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce. Safe workplaces mean fewer injuries, fewer medical claims and a stable workforce, all of which leads to a healthy bottom line for a business. Morrison was joined by chamber President/CEO Jed Metzger and Tony Daley of Limas Spallinger Millwright Services Inc. Metzger and Daley accepted the check on behalf of employers in the entire region, which includes Allen, Auglaize, Shelby, Hancock, Putnam, and Van Wert counties. Ohio Gov. John Kasich proposed the rebate in March. Its the third such rebate in the last four years, made possible by … Continue reading

Herb can help reduce menopause symptoms – Idaho State Journal

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

Treating menopausal symptoms is difficult in our current medical-legal quite confusing environment that seems to produce nothing but mixed data and differing opinions. It is always nice to see an alternative to hormone replacement therapy getting some data behind it as to its effectiveness. There is quite an array of natural remedies available out there, but very few have good clinical data as to their effectiveness. One supplement that has been used by alternative practitioners for a number years to treat menopausal symptoms such as anxiety, hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, and joint pain is Fennel. Fennel, as Im sure a number of you know, is an herb used in cooking. Fennel has essential oils and phytoestrogenic properties that give it a wonderful flavor, as well as its potential benefit in treating menopausal symptoms. A recent study published in the North American Menopause Society online journal Menopause showed that, compared to placebo, this herb greatly reduced menopausal symptoms, as listed above, when used as a method of intervention. As there are so many mainstream and alternative treatments for menopause and menopausal symptoms, its important that you sit and discuss potential interventions with your doctor to ensure there are no … Continue reading

Couple wins free IVF treatment in contest featured on Netflix … – KTNV Las Vegas

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) - It's a giveaway unlike any other. A local fertility clinic gave away an opportunity to have a baby. Now, this so-called in-vitro fertilization lottery is the subject of a documentary on Netflix. Patients walk through Dr. Geoffrey Sher's doors every day. Their hope is that he can help them get pregnant. "My doctor said that the only way that we could get pregnant was with IVF. He gave us a five percent chance without it, but we cannot afford IVF," said Dianna Theyssen, one of the contest entrants in Dr. Sher's latest contest to win a free IVF treatment. Hundreds applied to the nationwide contest, sharing their videos online. Many of their stories were heartbreaking. Their stories were documented in the movie "Vegas Baby." That film follows several of the contest entrants. It was just released on Netflix this week. Dr. Sher said he held the contest mostly because it's too expensive for most people to get IVF; insurance won't cover a large part of it. "For many people, it is a life changing thing. I wish there wasn't a need for contests and seminars and free cycles," said Dr. Sher. In the end, a panel … Continue reading

IVF treatment is Swadlincote couple’s only hope of having a baby – Burton Mail

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

A Swadlincote couple have told of their devastation after having their hopes of having a baby by IVF treatment dashed. Chris and Kelly Chambers had tried for six years to have a child before a number of problems left them unable to conceive naturally. They knew their only hope of having their own child would be through IVF, but they were beset by issues. Chris, 38, already has two children from a previous relationship, which meant the couple were not eligible for IVF treatment on the NHS. Then it emerged that Kelly, 32, could not be an egg donor because she carries the cystic fibrosis gene. The couple are now desperately trying to raise 10,000 to pay for private IVF treatment using an egg donor. They had their first taste of heartbreak five years ago, when the couple, who have been together for seven years, discovered Kelly had miscarried their first baby. The following year, she suffered an ectopic pregnancy and they were decided to "do some research and start exploring their options". Chris said this point was the "start of the emotional rollercoaster". He said: "We had been together a couple of years and we were keen to start … Continue reading

Computers beat scientists in choosing best embryos for IVF treatment – Sky News

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

Researchers are using computers to select embryos for IVF treatment after trials showed the technology was better at selecting successful embryos than scientists. The computer vision technology is a subfield within artificial intelligence (AI) research. It was designed by researchers from Sao Paulo State University in Brazil, alongside others from the Boston Place Clinic in London and Dr Cristina Hickman, a scientific adviser to the British Fertility Society. The team researching the technology believe it could completely change IVF treatments. It uses computer algorithms which are "trained" to recognise healthy embryos by comparing them with embryos which may not successfully lead to pregnancy. The researchers say it is able to recognise 24 characteristics of embryos which are invisible to humans: from the size of the embryo to the texture of the image, as well as detailed biological characteristics relating to the number and similarity of cells in the embryo. Although the study used cattle embryos rather than human ones, it found that the computer regularly outperformed the embryologists. It used 48 images which were evaluated by the computer vision algorithm and by the embryologists. Stuart Lavery, director of the Boston Place Clinic, said the technology would not replace examining chromosomes … Continue reading

The couple who wed in 2015 were offered IVF treatment at their last appointment in March, but as there was one other option before this last resort they chose to try it, but it sadly it didnt work. On June 26 the pair attended what should have been a routine appointment at Hertfordshire GynaeCATS Clinic at Colney Medical Centre but instead found out some devastating news. Self-employed consultant Tim said: We were told that IVF treatment has been suspended from June for six months while its under review, but might never return. To say we are devastated is an understatement, we feel completely let down by the NHS. We have always wanted to have children. My wife … Continue reading

Mixed response to news that IVF treatment will be reduced and some medicines no longer prescribed in Worcestershire – Worcester News

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

MORE details have been revealed about items that will no longer be handed out free on prescription. Toothpaste and verruca treatments are on the list of things that doctors will no longer routinely prescribe. Paracetamol and other easily accessible forms of pain relief and antihistamines will also no longer be available. We reported yesterday how Worcestershire's Clinical Commissioning Groups had agreed to withdraw funding for some items of food and medicine. The groups, who are responsible for buying healthcare services for the county's residents, also said some specialist baby milks, gluten-free food and vitamin and mineral pills will no longer be available on prescription. Most controversially, infertile couples will now be entitled to only one cycle of IVF on the NHS, rather than the two they currently receive. However, a spokesman for South Worcestershire CCG reassured people that decisions about what to prescribe would be based on the clinical judgment of their GP. He said: "If it is needed for patient then it will be given." The news of the cuts had a mixed response with online readers with some questioning the choices of medicines which were being prescribed. Charlotte Wilde wrote on the Worcester News facebook page: "Here's an … Continue reading

Lehigh establishes new Department of Bioengineering – The Brown and White

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

Lehigh has established a new Department of Bioengineering that will build upon the universitys existing bioengineering undergraduate and graduate programs, according to an announcement from Provost Patrick V. Farrell. The department, which was formally announced on July 1, will be chaired by Professor Anand Jagota, a member of the chemical and biomolecular engineering faculty who has chaired the bioengineering program since 2004. As Lehigh moves toward the creation of a new College of Health, the new Department of Bioengineering will form an essential connection point for ongoing interdisciplinary research and serve as a natural channel of partnership between the colleges, Farrell wrote. The initial department faculty includes 17 members with academic appointments, as well as 17 affiliated members, according to the announcement. Their research is supported by, among others, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of Energy. The field of bioengineering was born out of a combination of elements from other well-established disciplines, Jagota told University Communications. In recent years, it has developed its own language, its own tools, its own gravitational pull, so to speak. Thus, the timing is right for Lehigh to recognize this evolution by … Continue reading

5 ways CRISPR will save your life – Red Bull

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

Microsoft-founder Bill Gates told Wired magazine in 2010 that if he'd started hacking today, he wouldnt have bothered with computers but focused on biology instead. Taking the potential of CRISPR into consideration, its easy to see why. Hacking biology includes techniques like editing genes and telling a living organism from the size of a single cell to a complex mammal, like ourselves, to do things differently. We've been doing this for a while, creating new kinds of food, medicines and making cats glow in the dark. One problem was that these methods for editing genes were expensive and imprecise. Past tense, because of Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, or CRISPR for short. CRISPR works much like a DNA-level pair of scissors and glue stick. It dramatically lowers the bar for biotech innovation, making it 99 percent cheaper to edit genes, not to mention much more precise. As a result, just about anyone with a good idea, motivation and a little technical savvy can get into bioengineering and biohacking. But dont just take my word for it. Here are five ways that CRISPR can revolutionise how we do things, and save lives along the way. One of the biggest health … Continue reading

Stem Cell Therapy: You can be sexually active again – Vanguard

Posted: Published on July 9th, 2017

By David Ikudayisi Stem Cell Therapy comes in different types. Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy involves the use of embryonic stem cells derived from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, an early-stage pre-implantation embryo at 4 days old to around 12 days old, leading to the destruction of the blastocyst which raises ethical and religious issues. Therefore, this type of Stem Cell Therapy is not the focus of this piece. The focus is Adult Stem Cells (ADSCs) and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs). iPSCs are produced in the laboratories by reprogramming adult cells to express embryonic stem cells characteristics whereas ADSCs are cells obtained from an adult patient who will also be the recipient of the same stem cells. In the United States, we must transplant the cells back to the same patient on the same day, while in some countries, the stem cells can be cultured to increase the quantity of stem cells before transplanting them back to the same patient who donated them. Stem Cell Transplantation is a complex process that needs the care of experts in Regenerative Medicine, a new speciality of medicine . In order to ensure that science remains as the vehicle for hope and … Continue reading
