Shire applies to test haemophilia A gene therapy in humans – PharmaTimes

Posted: Published on July 7th, 2017

Shire has submitted a request to the US Food and Drug Administration to test its investigational factor VIII (FVIII) gene therapy SHP654 in patients with the bleeding disorder haemophilia A. SHP654 (also known as BAX 888) aims to protect haemophilia A patients against bleeds through the delivery of a long-term, constant level of factor expression, the firm noted. Shires gene therapy programme for haemophilia A uses a recombinant adeno-associated virus serotype 8 (rAAV8) vector that selectively targets the liver. It involves the delivery of a functional copy of FVIII to the bodys liver to enable its own production of FVIII, rather than relying on a factor-based treatment. The Investigational New Drug submission is based on the results of preclinical and phase I studies showing the potential utility of its candidate, the firm noted. If Shire gets a green light for human testing it intends to study SHP654 in a global multi-center trial evaluating safety and examining the doses required to boost factor VIII activity levels and affect haemophilic bleeding. Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

A physical therapy approach known as neurodevelopmental treatment can improve shaking but not movement inchildren with cerebral palsy, according to a South Korean study. The study, published in theJournal ofPhysical Therapy Science, was titled Effect of neurodevelopmental treatment-based physical therapy on the change of muscle strength, spasticity, and gross motor function in children with spastic cerebral palsy. Children with CP often experience movement-related problems. These include muscle weakness, spasticity, alimited range of motion, and loss of some movement functioning. Spasticity isstiffness or tightening of muscles that leads to involuntary movements. Physical therapy is often necessary to address movement problems, but researchers have disagreed on the best approach. Neurodevelopmental treatment, or NDT, isa hands-on approach to improving movement in patientswith CP, stroke, or head injury. It involves guiding a patients movements. Proponents say it allows a physical therapist to assess and analyze movements while training patients. South Korean researchers decided to investigate the effects of a year of NDT physical therapyon the muscle strength, spasticity, and movement of children with CP. The study included175 children with spastic cerebral palsy, aged 3 to 18. The children had NDT physical therapy 35 minutes a day, two to three times a week, for a … Continue reading

Brandon Smart is a 15-year-old boy from Howland, Maine. He was born prematurely at 28 weeks, declared blind and diagnosed with cerebral palsy before he turned 1. His life has been filled with struggle but also hope. He has spent the last four months at Franciscan Children's to be treated for infected pressure ulcers and broken bones in his legs. Smart's family and doctors shared their concern with President Trump's proposal to "repeal and replace" Obamacare at a press event on Thursday at the hospital. "The Smart family has private insurance but relies on federal Medicaid funding to supplement coverage of Brandons extensive medical expenses and nursing care," the hospital said in a press release.Medicaid would be cut under Trump's proposal. Treatment for Brandon is difficult in Maine with the complexity of his condition, his doctors said. Transportation to the hospital and therapy to strengthen him is a complex issue. The type of care for children with long-term mental and physical disabilities that Franciscan Children's provides is unique in the Boston area and the US, said John Nash, president and CEO of Franciscan Children's, and Smart's doctor, Elisabeth Schainker. When Obamacare was enacted, it added money to Medicaid, but for … Continue reading

Marine Corps Systems Command wins award for creating life-saving technology – Quantico Sentry Online

Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

Marine Corps Systems Command aboard Quantico is bringing innovative, life-saving and award-winning technology to Marines on the front line. The Infrascanner is a portable, medical diagnostic device that provides early detection of intracranial hematomas or bleeding within the skull in the field, potentially saving lives and improving casualty care and recovery. The handheld device uses near-infrared light invisible light that is nearly visible to the naked eye to effectively check for intracranial hematomas on different parts of the skull. With the device, medical personnel at battalion aid stations can quickly assess Marines who may have suffered a head injury. Intracranial hematomas if gone untreated can put pressure on the brain, causing potential brain damage or even death, said Mark Urrutic, project officer for the Family of Field Medical Equipment Team at MCSC. A retired Navy chief hospital corpsman, Urrutic is familiar with the scenarios Marines face that can lead to this type of injury. Marines can sustain these types of injuries by falling and hitting their heads, or by being in close proximity to a blast, which could damage the brain by rattling it within the skull, he said. Successful treatment of traumatic brain injuries often relies on timely diagnosis … Continue reading

This story appears in ESPN The Magazine's Body Issue 2017. Subscribe today! EVERY FOUR YEARS or so, some of the world's most prominent scientists gather to synthesize and summarize the latest in brain-injury research. Since first meeting in 2001, the assemblage, called the Concussion in Sport Group, has grown in size and influence. Doctors, athletic trainers and media types around the world take their cues from the recommendations it publishes and from the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) it has developed. When members gathered in Berlin last October, Jiri Dvorak, then FIFA's chief medical officer, said they worked on behalf of some 1billion professional and amateur athletes. For that 2016 symposium, around 400 medical and sports professionals met in the Grand Ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton hotel, with art nouveau stylings that hark back to the days before the world wars and trappings so posh that guests enjoy breakfast honey harvested from a rooftop beehive. Acupuncture is found effective for the treatment of paralysis caused by a stroke. Researches tested the Shujintongluo acupuncture protocol for the treatment of hemiplegia, a type of stroke affecting one side of the body. The addition of acupuncture to standard drug therapy following an acute cerebral infarction increased the positive patient outcome rate by 11.77%. Upper limb acupoints A randomized clinical trial of 68 patients examined results in two groups. One group received standard drug therapy and the other group received standard drug therapy plus acupuncture. The drug therapy only group had a total effective rate of 70.59%. The group receiving drug therapy plus acupuncture had an 82.36% total effective rate. One of the more important results measured in the study was the recovery rate, defined as a disability rank of level 0 and the NHISS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale/Score) improvement rate of 91% 100%. The group receiving acupuncture plus drugs had a 29.41% recovery rate and the drugs only group had a 20.59% recovery rate. Another important result was the significantly effective rate, defined as a disability rank of level 1 3 and an NHISS improvement of 46% 90%.
