Russian, Singaporean scientists reveal how plants weather cold temperatures – TASS

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2017

MOSCOW, June 28. /TASS/ An international research team from Novosibirsk State University (NSU), the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICG SB RAS), and the National University of Singapore have identified and analyzed the mechanism enabling plants to adapt to cold temperatures. This breakthrough was announced by NSUs Computational Transcriptomic and Evolutionary Bioinformatics Laboratory (LCTEB). It turns out that plants sacrifice their newborn cells of the root tip in order to survive cold temperature conditions and retain their own stem cells. The study was published recently in the journal, Cell. Plants possess stem cells just as animals do, which are the cells located at the tip of roots or sprouts from where any other plant tissues originate. Researchers from Singapore revealed that at a low temperature (+4 C) the DNA in a plants stem cells is damaged which can result in the death of the cells offspring. With that, the death of cells inside the root tip has been shown to help other tissues survive and toughen up the plant in such a way that it becomes more resistant to any other types of stress. "Only a few stem cell offspring die … Continue reading

Minimizing Hazards and Fraud in Milk, IBM Research Partners with Cornell University – FoodSafetyTech (blog)

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2017

Leveraging metagenomics and big data, IBM and Cornell are collaborating to protect the global milk supply. Americans consume an estimated 600 pounds of milk and milk-based products annually, according to the USDA. In an effort to minimize the hazards in the milk supply and prevent food fraud, IBM Research and Cornell University are joining forces. Combining next-generation sequencing with bioinformatics, the research project will collect genetic data from the microbiome of raw milk samples in a real-world situation at the Cornell University dairy plant and farm in Ithaca, New York. Specifically, IBM and Cornell will sequence and analyze the DNA and RNA of food microbiomes, which will serve as a raw milk baseline, to develop tools that monitor raw milk and detect abnormalities that could indicate safety hazards and potential fraud. The data collected may also be used to expand existing bioinformatics analytical tools used by the Consortium for Sequencing the Food Supply Chain, a project that was launched by IBM Research and Mars, Inc. at the beginning of 2015. As natures most perfect food, milk is an excellent model for studying the genetics of food. As a leader in genomics research, the Department of Food Science expects this research … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Goal: How Cristian Roldan's defense, Clint Dempsey's movement led to equalizer against Portland – SoundersFC.com

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2017

The Seattle Sounders stole a dramatic road point against the Portland Timbers last Sunday in what was their arguably their best effort of the season. Down a man and a goal for the entire second half, substitute Clint Dempsey headed home an equalizer in the 94th minute to stun Providence Park. The entire sequence, though Roman Torres pinpoint cross to Dempsey, Dempseys towering header and the unlikeliest of goals did not matriculate from nothing. What led to the Sounders game-tying tally was a seemingly inconspicuousdefensive play by Cristian Roldan on Dairon Asprilla. Nearing the end of the 93rd minute, the Timbers cleared the ball from their own 18-yard-box and found Asprilla in open space on the left side of the pitch. Desperate for an equalizer, the Sounders had thrown almost everyone forward, which in turnleft Asprilla and Fanendo Adi in a 2-on-2 situation with Nouhou and a retreating Roldan. Rather than sprinting back aimlessly, Roldan defended with purpose, coming in goalside on an angle behind Asprilla. When Asprilla finally receivedthe ball, his options were limited because of Roldans positioning. Asprilla turnedand facedbackward, attempting to hold up the ball in search of a teammate. He never gets the chance to find … Continue reading

Dreamers Awake review a sublime anatomy of female surrealism – The Guardian

Composite: Courtesy: the artists and Folio Society/Freud's Interpreting Dreams/White Cube; Rose Gallery The word surrealism was coined by the poet Apollinaire a century ago, and refers above all to an art of juxtaposition, the concatenation of shockingly disparate elements, shorn of context, with the slippery, succinct logic of a bad dream. Little wonder it was Merriam-Websters word of 2016, owing to above average online searches. Early surrealists sought to plunder unconscious forces; inevitably, sex was the main energy supplier. What this meant in practice was a prevalence of womens bodies, appropriated and dismembered. Voiceless, limbless, headless, the surrealist woman reaches her apogee in Magrittes The Rape, in which a face is formed from a torso, with breasts for eyes and a pubic grin. This isnt to say that female artists havent found surrealism a productive field to plough, as the dizzyingly beautiful Dreamers Awake makes clear. A sublime survey of more than 50 female artists, from Dorothea Tanning and Louise Bourgeois to Hannah Wilke and … Continue reading

Anatomy of a traffic jam: How storm drain repairs locked up Annapolis – CapitalGazette.com

Posted: Published on June 29th, 2017

Rob Savidge just didn't think it would be much of a problem. A project manager for the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, he gave the go-ahead to make repairs on storm drain inlets on Forest Drive at Bay Ridge Avenue in Annapolis starting at 8 a.m. April 4. The result came as a surprise for Savidge, but perhaps even more for thousands of motorists stuck in gridlock memorable even in a part of the city known for traffic jams. On a bright sunny morning they found themselves stuck for more than an hour at the confluence of Hillsmere Drive, Bay Ridge Road, Bay Ridge Avenue and Forest Drive because someone didn't realize the impact of shutting down lanes in rush hour. "That's the most frustrating part of all of this," said Savidge, now a candidate for City Council in the ward next to the intersection. "At the time, I was following the procedures that I was aware of. "Just, unfortunately, a lot of things came together." Documents released to The Capital under a series of Maryland Public Information Act requests show city and county officials searched for hours on the morning of April 4 to explain what seemed … Continue reading

Emma’s Voice One family’s mission to raise the money needed to fund their daughter’s treatment – Duncan Banner

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2017

Emma Harper is a non-verbal 10-year-old from Duncan who has battled against cerebral palsy and a broad spectrum genetic disorder her entire life but now, with the help of a new stem cell treatment she could finally find her voice. One day, Emmas parents Micah and Tara Sears Harper found a video online of a young girl with the same type of cerebral palsy as Emma. Stem cell treatments helped the girl have a better quality of life and Micah has hope the treatments will do the same for Emma. Really what the STEM cell treatment is supposed to do is it finds where it needs to go, Micah said. Because stem cells go to what we are hoping is going to be the areas of her brain that were damaged and start repairing that area, so she can be more verbal were hoping that through this she is going to be able to find her voice. Its an expensive process which totals around $25,000, but the family is hoping the community will aid them in their journey through a ministry they created. The ministry is called Give One, and was started through the Harpers church as a means to … Continue reading

$1M donation funds Bacharach’s new neurorecovery center – Press of Atlantic City

Posted: Published on June 28th, 2017

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP A $1 million donation will help Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation launch a specialized center focused on recovery treatment for neurological diseases and disorders. James Klinghoffer, local philanthropist and Longport resident, donated the money to the health provider that will fund the James Klinghoffer Neurorecovery Center, which is slated to open this fall. The money will help pay for advanced robotic technology used to help patients regain mobility. I thought, from my own perspective, if I had a stroke and had a spastic arm, what would it be worth to get treatment to help me dress myself again, said Gabe Staino, Bacharach senior development officer. Just the idea that I could be independent enough to dress myself, to walk again ... these devices take it to another level. Klinghoffer is known for donating money to Shore Medical Center in Somers Point for its James Klinghoffer Emergency Pavilion and the hospitals Harry and Edith Klinghoffer Pediatric Care Center, along with donations to Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May, Gildas Club and other organizations. He said he credits his parents, Harry and Edith Klinghoffer, as the inspiration for his charitable donations that support community providers and services. I give … Continue reading
