In addition to your body, hands, and face, eczema can also plague the scalp, usually in a condition known as seborrheic dermatitis. There is some disagreement among experts about whether or not seborrheic dermatitis should be considered a form of chronic eczema or a separate skin condition, although the National Eczema Association considers it to be a type of eczema. (Eczema is a general term that includes a variety of conditions that causered, inflamed skin.) "Seborrheic dermatitis is a common form of chronic eczema on the scalp associated with a fungi," says Gil Yosipovitch, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and author of Living With Itch ($19; amazon.com). It strikes parts of the body with many oil-producing (sebaceous) glands, leading to symptoms such as redness, flakes, and patches of greasy, swollen-looking skin. Unlike atopic dermatitis, a chronic form of eczema that is thought to be caused byan abnormal immune reaction, seborrheic dermatitisdoesn't usually cause severeitching. How to Stop Itching Your Skin If You Have Eczema – Health.com

"Dont scratch" is probably one of the bestand worstpieces of advice an eczema patient can receive. The skin condition, which is causedby an abnormal immune reaction that results in dry, red, cracked patches of skin, is only made worse by itching. Your nails damage the skin barrier, which then ramps up inflammatory molecules that exacerbatethe itch, explains Jonathan Silverberg, MD, PhD, assistant professor of dermatology at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Whats more, chronic scratching may make you more susceptible to infections, since it's easier for bacteria to invade the crackedskin. But heres the rub: itching an eczema rashfeels good. "Scratching induces a short term pain response that suppresses the itch," says Dr. Silberberg. "Patients feel the short-term gain, but dont realize how it actually harms skin." Your best way to dampen down the itchis to see your doctor for treatments, prescription or over-the-counter, thataddressthe underlying problem that causes the itch. Although it may not be possible to stop itching once and for all, here are eightstrategies that may help you keep your hands off. Jeffrey S. Fromowitz, MD, a dermatologist in Boca Raton, Florida recommends holding an ice cube or cool compress on the itchy area. "The … Continue reading

I Grew Up With Severe Eczemaand It Was Exhausting – Health.com

Posted: Published on June 18th, 2017

I was five years old when the first patches of eczema started appearing on my skin, but it would be another five years before I was officiallydiagnosed. At first, no one knew what the rash was. Even the doctors weren'tmuch help; they prescribed me all kinds of creams, but nothing worked. When I look back now, Im not sure if the doctors were stumped,or if they simply were havingtrouble communicating with my mother (at the time, her English wasn'tvery strong). When the medications didn'twork, my mom tried home remedies. She would rub aloe vera on my skin, and I vaguely remember drinking something that was made of seeds.Neither worked. It wasn'tuntil I was 10 years oldat which point the patches had spread to my arms, legs, and facethat I sawa dermatologist, who gave me a shot. I cant remember what the shot was; the memory is kind of fuzzy, but I do recall that my skin got better afterward. I also left with a prescription for cortisone cream and the name of the condition that had been plaguingme for years: eczema. My eczema was bad when I was young, but my middle-school years weremuch worse. There were times during my … Continue reading

Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis walk doubles in size and fundraising – WSYR

Posted: Published on June 18th, 2017

LIVERPOOL (WSYR-TV) - As more people are diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, the push for a cure is growing. Saturday morning about 400 people joined the annual Take Steps for Crohn's and Colitis walk at Onondaga Lake Park in Liverpool. That's more than double the turnout just last year. Volunteers with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation say they also doubled their fundraising this year, topping a $30,000 goal. "Our goal, obviously first and foremost is to get the word out so that people know what those diseases mean, so when they look around and see 300 plus people there to support them, they don't feel alone and isolated," says Eric Israel with the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. Organizers say many people don't understand the diseases because patients may be uncomfortable talking about them. "I know a lot of people are sensitive to the subject. But here, it is normal. It affects people in different ways and you learn about them," says Sara Gunther, an ulcerative colitis patient who led a team of supporters in the walk. Several people from NewsChannel 9 joined Tammy Palmer's team at the walk. She underwent J-pouch surgery when medication failed to treat her … Continue reading

Shown here is the nervous system, containing the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves. A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage to any part of the spinal cord, the bundle of nerves that runs from the brain down the vertebral column, or disease. "Spinal cord injury is basically any trauma to thespinal cordthat interrupts the flow of [electrical] information from the brain to wherever the nerves are going," said Dr. Salvatore Insinga, chief of neurosurgery at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, New York. The injury can prevent motor signals from reaching the muscles, resulting in paralysis, or sensory information from reaching the brain. "Its a two-way conduit," Insinga told Live Science. The occurrence of spinal cord injury among survivors is about 40 cases per million in the United States, or about 12,000 new cases per year, according to a 2013 report by the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC). An estimated 273,000 people are living with spinal cord injury in the United States, in a range from 238,000 to 332,000. Local neurologist to lead national group – Fort Wayne Journal Gazette

Posted: Published on June 18th, 2017

James C. Stevens has always been drawn to challenging cases. From the time Stevens was a high school student working as an emergency room orderly, the local neurologist felt drawn to patients with injuries that affected the brain, spine or nervous system. The son of a dentist father and schoolteacher mother, Stevens believed the field could keep him interested for a lifetime because there was so much doctors didn't know in the 1980s, when he was attending medical school at Indiana University. And he was right. Almost 30 years afterhe began practice, Dr. Stevens remains fascinated by neurology. That curiosity and dedication helped propel him to being named president-elect of the American Academy of Neurology, a professional group with about 32,000 members. Stevens will serve a two-year term before taking the presidency for the following two years. He will be the organization's 36th president, its first from Indiana. Catherine Rydell, the academy's executive director and CEO, said Steven's outstanding contributions to the organization have included leading its strategic planning process and contributing to more than 80 neurological clinical trials as participant, co-author or principal investigator. His dedication and wealth of leadership experience will continue to advance our growing organization, she … Continue reading

June 15, 2017, 6:00 a.m. Phil Janowicz might have been your favorite chemistry teacher in college. His youthful enthusiasm, sense of humor and willingness to chat are all as clear as the safety glasses on his nose. But this former Cal State Fullerton chemistry professor is now looking to form a different kind of bond with the Orange County voters he hopes to represent in Washington, D.C. The 33-year-old Janowicz is going after a big target: Republican Congressman Ed Royce of Fullerton, who was first elected to represent Californias 39th District in 1992 and is chairmanof the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Janowicz, a Democrat, announced his candidacy in April at an amphitheater in the heart the universitys campus. His chemistry background (and love of puns) are evident in his campaign slogan: Solutions for Congress. It was something hehad been mulling for a long time, and the turning point came on Nov. 8, 2016. Janowicz and his wife were watching the election returns together. Angela Janowicz, an English teacher, was wearing her Nasty woman T-shirt, and the two were geared up for a Hillary Clinton victory. But as it became clear that Donald Trump had won, Angela turned to Phil and … Continue reading

MEL Science Launches Virtual Reality Chemistry Lessons – T.H.E. Journal

Posted: Published on June 17th, 2017

STEM and VR MEL Science, based in London, has launched a series of virtual reality (VR) chemistry lessons for K12. The 3-year-old company this week released a MEL Chemistry VR app, featuring a virtual chemistry lab, for free on Google Daydream. This free version, which contains the first six chemistry lessons, is available at this MEL Science site. According to MEL Science, chemistry is filled with abstract concepts that may prove difficult for young students to understand. The best method for kids to learn is through hands-on interaction, so MEL Science developed these VR chemistry lessons to enliven molecular-level science and illustrate it on an immersive, life-sized level. The lessons follow K12 curricular guidelines, and are designed to be used in the classroom or at home. A special version for educators will be released soon, the company said. In these first six lessons, students should be able to see what its like to dive into a pencil (graphite) or a diamond and discover what these objects look like on an atomic level. Students should be able to learn about basic chemistry principles in an interactive, friendly way, including topics such as: Students will also get the opportunity to build an … Continue reading
