Retired biology professor’s journey to carpet weaving – Daily Sabah

Posted: Published on June 13th, 2017

For a 79-year-old retired biology professor living in Sivas, carpet weaving is a way of life. Prof. Yener Okatan has woven a map of the world onto a world globe, using a unique loom he designed himself. His self-designed loom allowed the retired professor to realize his dream, even gaining a patent on his woven globe in 2007. Okatan stated that he hopes to provide weaving courses applying his own unique style to carpet weaving instruction. Currently teaching 10 students at the Sivas Public Education Center's Evening Art School as a volunteer, Okatan conducts his workshops using a unique loom with 10 spools, representing the colors on the globe. The completed versions of the globes woven by his students will soon be sent out to local corporations and displayed at museums. Speaking to the press about what inspired him to pursue this dream, Okatan said that he was once mesmerized by an embossed carpet he saw in Istanbul during his time as a student there. Having no knowledge of carpet weaving, Okatan started to work toward realizing his dream by designing his own loom in 2005 after retiring from his career as a biology professor. 'Sivas has the globe carpet' … Continue reading

London Theater Review: 'Anatomy of a Suicide' – Variety

Posted: Published on June 13th, 2017

The sins of the father revisited on the son its a stage staple that tracks back to Ancient Greece. From Captain Alving in Ibsens Ghosts to Arthur Millers arms-dealing Joe Keller in All My Sons, a mans acts live on. Feminist playwright (Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again.) and screenwriter (Lady Macbeth) Alice Birch offers an alternative in this chilly triptych, now play at the Royal Court Theater. Not once, but twice, a mothers trauma rebounds on her daughter. Mental illness becomes a baton passed between three generations: a frazzled 1970s housewife, a 1990s riot girl, a detached doctor in 2033. Katie Mitchells clinical staging forces us to watch forensically, sifting for clues about causality. Is this nature, nurture or social structure? Birch splits the stage in three, so that three women, decades apart, appear side by side. In 1971, Carol (Hattie Morahan) emerges from hospital with her wrists wrapped in bandages, her husband berating her for ruining the floorboards. In 1997, Anna (Kate OFlynn) wobbles on her feet, off her bloodied head, with one arm in a sling, as a male nurse checks her over and ticks her off. In 2033, a third woman holds her bleeding hand, a fishhook … Continue reading

Teen from Baltimore with cerebral palsy finishes Ironman Boulder, pushed and pulled by wingman David Slomkowski – The Denver Post

Posted: Published on June 13th, 2017

BOULDER As a steady stream of exhausted athletes crossed the finish line of the Ironman Boulder, the volume of cheers rose Sunday at 10:30 p.m. to welcome James Banks and David Slomkowski to the end of their long ordeal. The duo from Baltimore had begun 15 hours and 45 minutes earlier. Banks, whom Slomkowski pulled and pushed for more than 140 miles, smiled broadly after a finish-area volunteer hung the Ironman medal from his neck. Banks, 18, has cerebral palsy and scoliosis. Booyah! a group of friends shouted, knowing that is Banks favorite word for expressing happiness. Booyah! he replied to whoops and hollers. You are an Ironman! someone shouted. Slomkowski founded Athletes Serving Athletes in Baltimore a decade ago after being inspired by the story of Team Hoyt. Dick Hoyt has pushed and pulled son Rick, who has cerebral palsy, through 72 marathons and seven Ironmans. Banks was one of ASAs first athletes, and it was a dream come true for Slomkowski to give him the Ironman experience. He did great, Slomkowski said. He wasnt feeling so hot before the race, and he never is not feeling well, so we were concerned about him and said, Lets take a … Continue reading
