Study Finds Most Cardiologists Lack Heart Healthy Diet and Up to Date Nutrition Education – PR Newswire (press release)

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2017

CHICAGO, June 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Like most Americans, even cardiologists fail to eat to enough fruit and vegetables. And, while cardiologists overwhelmingly believe their role includes personally providing patients with at least basic nutrition information, less than a third describe their nutrition knowledge as "mostly up to date" or better. These are among the findings from the report A Deficiency of Nutrition Education and Practice in Cardiology, published by The American Journal of Medicine and authored by a dozen physicians and healthcare professionals in the United States and Spain. "Although cardiovascular guidelines describe nutrition as a foundation of care, neither education nor practice among cardiologists and cardiovascular team members reflect that priority," said lead author Stephen Devries, M.D., executive director, Gaples Institute for Integrative Cardiology. The nonprofit provides advocacy and education that empowers healthcare professionals and the public to promote heart health through greater attention to nutrition and lifestyle. "While the report notes serious deficiencies, it highlights tremendous opportunities to improve cardiovascular care, save lives and reduce healthcare costs. We hope these findings serve as a call to action for much greater emphasis on nutrition in the training and practice of cardiovascular specialists." The report is based upon what … Continue reading

Genomic sequencing could become household term with new hand-held device – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2017

June 12, 2017 by Kathleen Phillips Dr. John Tyson, a minION instructor and research associate at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, demonstrated a minION during a training of scientists at Texas A&M AgriLife Research. The minION is a sequencing system made by Oxford Nanopore Technology. Basically, its a handheld device into which a sample is placed and then within minutes the samples genome is translated into ones laptop. Credit: Texas A&M AgriLife Research photo by Kathleen Phillips Within five years, consumers may begin using a device smaller than a flip phone to monitor the air, test their food or diagnose what germ caused an upset stomach. And the root of this capability points to what now is only for scientistsgenome sequencing. That's the message from a team of scientists from the U.K. and Canada teaching a weeklong class to about 40 fellow researchers from around the U.S. at Texas A&M AgriLife Research in College Station. This course, a sort of "nerd summer camp for adults," was different, organizers said. Rather than instructing the art and science of genomics and bioinformatics on the multi-million-dollar equipment typically in labs, the class used the minIONa sequencing system made by Oxford Nanopore … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Suicide review a startling study of mothers and daughters – The Guardian

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2017

What determines our character? Nature or nurture? Genetic inheritance or social environment? It is an age-old debate, and Alice Birch now adds to it with this startling theatrical triptych about three generations of mothers and daughters. Whatever my doubts about Birchs conclusion, the play is odd, arresting and, in Katie Mitchells immaculate production, highly original in its form. Birchs progress as a writer has been fascinating to watch. She delivered a short, sharp shock in 2014 with Revolt, She Said, Revolt Again which was a subversive, playful piece calling for revolution in everything from sexual relationships to the workplace. In 2015, the Orange Tree brought us an earlier Birch play, Little Light, about sibling rivalries, that suffered from too much withheld information. Since then Birch has written a polemical piece about porn, We Want You to Watch; the admired Ophelias Zimmer, which I missed; and the recent film Lady Macbeth, which transposed a Russian novel to Victorian England and got a five-star review from Peter Bradshaw. On the evidence so far, I would say Birch has a gift for radical experiment in the style of Caryl Churchill and Sarah Kane. In her new play we are confronted by three women, … Continue reading
