FBI gets synthetic biology crash course at CSU – Source

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2017

For one week in May, 11 agents and analysts from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation were on campus for an intensive training program spearheaded by one of the universitys preeminent biotechnologists. The goal: giving the law enforcement personnel foundational knowledge and insight into the rapidly evolving field of synthetic biology. Jean Peccoud, the Abell Endowed Chair in Synthetic Biology in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, organized the session with the FBI. Peccoud is a computational and cell biologist whose research is in the development of novel DNA molecules, and improving the manufacture of bio-based drugs and vaccines. At first glance, a relationship between synthetic biology researchers and the nations top law enforcement agency might seem incongruous. Consider, though, the rapid development of genetic engineering techniques over the last several years. The agents who visited campus were part of the FBIs Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate, whose purview includes preventing and responding to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents. The WMD Directorate is working to build relationships with universities and industry partners to become educated on trends in biological research from the manufacture of living organism-based vaccines, to the synthesis of new genes in the lab, said William … Continue reading

An interview with Julie Legault: Founder and CEO of Amino Labs Inc. As an enthusiast and synthetic biology practitioner, what attracts me most of our field is how fast is spreading and how people from different domains start to ask questions and to get interested in what we do. In the past year, Ive heard over and over the word democratization of synbio, which is the idea of making synthetic biology (and science in general) more available and understandable to the lay public. This certainly is no easy task. In fact, people wonder if it is even possible, and if it is, how do we do it? While only time will give definitive answers to these questions, today I would like to tell you the story of Julie Legault and her company Amino Labs: The company pioneering accessible bioengineering in the home and school. Originally a designer, Julie walked into the field of synthetic biology almost by accident. Julies time at MIT (she holds a Masters of Science from the MIT Media Lab) was coincident with Joi Itos growing interest in synthetic biology as the new digital, says Julie [Joi Ito is director of the MIT Media Lab and a … Continue reading

Senior Profile: Valedictorian Jonas Kantola Pursues Passion for Biology – The Vermont Standard

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2017

Jonas Kantola from West Windsor is Woodstock Union High Schools valedictorian for the graduating class of 2017. In the fall, Kantola will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he hopes to study biological engineering or aerospace engineering. Kantolas passion for biology began when he was a high school freshman. I took AP biology as an independent study in my freshman year. I was able to go as in-depth as I wanted to and I really enjoyed it. I especially liked microbiology because it is the foundation of how our body operates. Proteins were also very interesting as they regulate almost all of our bodily functions, he said. Im interested in aerospace because I love the idea of exploring space. Innovative companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are pushing the possibilities of space travel, and I believe that humans will become interplanetary during this century. It would be an incredible experience to be on the forefront of such a momentous change, he said. Biology and aerospace engineering are not Kantolas only interests though. Woodstock Union High School has provided a variety of sports opportunities for him. I have been involved in soccer, Nordic skiing, alpine skiing, and lacrosse. In … Continue reading

About Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Primarily affecting males, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare and fatal genetic disorder that results in progressive muscle weakness from early childhood and leads to premature death in the mid-twenties due to heart and respiratory failure. It is a progressive muscle disorder caused by the lack of functional dystrophin protein. Dystrophin is critical to the structural stability of skeletal, diaphragm, and heart muscles. Patients with DMD can lose the ability to walk as early as age ten, followed by loss of the use of their arms. DMD patients subsequently experience life-threatening lung complications, requiring the need for ventilation support, and heart complications in their late teens and twenties. It is estimated that a nonsense mutation is the cause of DMD in approximately 13 percent of patients. About ataluren (Translarna)Ataluren, discovered and developed by PTC Therapeutics, Inc., is a protein restoration therapy designed to enable the formation of a functioning protein in patients with genetic disorders caused by a nonsense mutation. A nonsense mutation is an alteration in the genetic code that prematurely halts the synthesis of an essential protein. The resulting disorder is determined by which protein cannot be expressed in its entirety and is … Continue reading

ByGraham Gremore Ryan J. Haddad has a message for the world: Hes gay. Hes disabled. And hes sexy as f*ck. And speaking of, ahem, f*cking, he wouldnt mind doing some of that. 25-year-old Haddad is the subject of the first episode of Davey Waveys new digital series #ThisIsMe, which is a series that will feature body image stories of gay men from across the spectrum of our community. Haddad has cerebral palsy and needs a walker to get around. He describes himself as a hairy twink not an otter (he doesnt think he has quite enough hair to qualify as an otter) with nice legs and a very respectable penis. Related:Turns Out Grindr Is A Godsend If Youre Gay, Twentysomething, And Disabled When he first started going out to gay clubs in his early 20s, Haddad had some rather awkward run-ins with other guys. Often they would look at him with sadnessor pity. It took him several years to realize that those were their issues and that it had nothing to do with him. I realize [now] that I am good enough, Haddad says. Men just dont have the knowledge or the understanding required to approach someone with a walker. … Continue reading

MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee man is accused of setting his wheelchair-bound sister on fire, and killing her, according to a criminal complaint. Nasif Salaan Hibbler, 30, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of his sister, Shakira Hicks, according to TODAY'S TMJ4 sister station Channel 3000 in Madison. Police said Hibbler walked into a Milwaukee police station on Saturday and told officers, I just set my sister on fire. Officers went to the mans home and found a fire inside the home and a woman who had been injured in the fire. Hicks has cerebral palsy and was not able to get out of the wheelchair, police said. The criminal complaint said isopropyl alcohol was found in the area of the fire, and the cause of the fire was determined to be arson. Detectives said Hibbler admitted to setting the fire. 'Peoples' voices' began to talk to him, telling he better do something or they were going to kill him, the complaint said. Hibbler told police he had threatening voices in his head. He told police, famous, "rappers were attempting to sexually assault him through the couch he was sitting on." Hibbler says he grabbed a bottle of … Continue reading

SELINSGROVE, Pa. (AP) - A beaming Tyler Neitz clutched the hand of Logan Leiby when he stopped at his Hummels Wharf home for a visit early Saturday evening. It was a similar gesture the friends shared a few days earlier when Leiby, a junior at Selinsgrove High School, escorted Neitz to his high school commencement and sat with him throughout the ceremony. Its like a security blanket, holding hands, because he tenses up, said Leiby. Neitz, 20, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Leiby learned about his tendency to clench his hands when anxious while working with him and other disabled students in the schools life skills learning class. A record-setting high school quarterback, Leiby plans a career in elementary and special education. One thing you realize is how fortunate you are, but also how special they are - how brave the kids in the program are, he said. When our teacher, Mrs. Michelle Mudrock, asked if I could accompany him to graduation, I was so honored. It was such a great thing and I was so touched to be asked to be with my friend. I mean there was no way I would ever say no. Martin and … Continue reading

Bioengineering test plot in Lions Park – Devon Dispatch

Posted: Published on June 10th, 2017

Submitted by Allan Macaulay You may have noticed the Town of Devons sign in Lions Park recently referring to a bioengineering test plot. Its time to talk about it. Bioengineering in this context is a process that uses local plant material to stabilize an eroding river or stream bank. If we are satisfied with this process we can apply it to Beaver Loop and other unstable locations around town. What got this going? This grew out of an environmental plan a group of us did for the Town a few years ago. We started talking and got to know Kristen Anderson a local resident and knowledgeable environmental consultant who now works for Associated Engineering. Associated Engineering in conjunction with the Town of Devon, Devon Nature Club and Devon Lions Club hosted a two day bioengineering course one day in the classroom at the golf course and one day hands on installing the test plot on the river bank in Lions Park. We used tree stems as the building blocks for the project. The stems were cut on property on the west side of highway 60 with permission of the land owner Qualico Developments. The plant material mostly willow and Balsam … Continue reading

Sexual dysfunction and infertility are common in males with traumatic spinal cord injuries (SCIs). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and infertility in males with traumatic SCI managed in Jamaica, as well as the therapeutic options offered. A cross-sectional study including males with traumatic SCI managed at the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, Kingston, Jamaica was carried out between 1 January and 31 December 2015. Sexual function was measured with the International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire, and further information on social history, fertility desires and treatment options offered were collected. Data were analyzed using Stata 12 for Windows (College Station, TX, USA). The mean age of patients at the time of study was 38.815.3 years (range 19-71) with a mean duration of injury of 3.72.4 years (range 1.3-15.6). Of 45 patients with traumatic SCI surveyed, 90.7% had erectile dysfunction, with 62.8% being classified as severe and 73.3% of men were unable to ejaculate. Treatment for erectile and ejaculatory dysfunction was offered in only two patients, respectively. Most (71.1%) patients indicated that they wanted to have children in the future, however, no one had been referred for assisted reproductive techniques. Men with traumatic … Continue reading
