‘This is not the way’: Bill Maher slams Texas A&M muscular dystrophy doc’s ‘cruel’ dog experiments – Raw Story

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

Comedian and host of HBOs Real Time Bill Maher made an impassioned plea for an end to experiments on dogs at Texas Agricultural and Mechanical University (TAMU) that he views as cruel and inhumane. These dogs, he said, are afflicted with canine muscular dystrophy. Thats right, Maher said, Dr. Joe Kornegay is making dogs sick with a debilitating and incurable disease that ravages their bones and bodies on purpose. The dogs struggle to walk as their muscles weaken and waste away. Puppies that would normally be running and playing and digging up rose bushes become completely crippled before they reach six months old. Kornegays research is aimed at finding treatment and possible cures for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. According to his groups website, the National Center for Canine Models of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (NCDMD), For the past 25 years, Dr. Kornegay has studied a spontaneous canine disease termed golden retriever muscular dystrophy (GRMD), which serves as an animal model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) of humans. Both conditions are X-linked, occurring due to mutations in the dystrophin gene. Through his work with canines, Kornegay is attempting to improve life for the 1 out of every 3,500 males born with Duchenne Muscular … Continue reading

That charity is the United Cerebral Palsy of NEPA. Executive Director Sarah Drob remembers the phone call from Mike out of the blue seven years ago that started it all. "Talked to us, said, 'We'd like to do this. Would you be interested in being the beneficiary?' No problem! We'll be there! We've grown with them. They are a tremendous group of people," said Drob. Sisters with cerebral palsy hope Camp Rise Above can soon become an overnight experience As summer break draws closer so does the chance for young children to go to summer camp. While most kids can choose where they want to go, others are limited for medical reasons. That's where Camp Rise Above steps in, as they work to give children with special needs a chance to go to camp and make memories to last a lifetime. Sisters Maggie and Lucy are just like any other pair of siblings. They love to play, have fun and learn. They don't let the fact that they have cerebral palsy get in the way. Maggie has speech and movement issues. Lucy has a tough time walking. But when the go to Camp Rise Above in the summer, no one notices their disabilities. "My favorite is I get to swim with my buddy, and it's really fun," Lucy said. Maggie's favorite activity is the climbing wall. Camp Rise Above provides them a chance to try new things and have new experiences. Right now it isn't an overnight camp, but organizers and the two girls are hoping that changes soon. Tuhin Dey has always been a class topper. He showed it once again by scoring 88% in his CBSE Class X examinations. He hopes one day to be part of IIT Kharagpur one day. What sets the 17-year-old apart, however, is that he forges ahead in chasing his dreams despite being confined to a wheelchair, unable to move, write with a pen or type on a computer. Hailing from Medinipur in West Bengal, Tuhin was diagnosed at birth with cerebral palsy and arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a disorder that affects the joints and limits flexibility. But for the teen, who has undergone at least 20 surgeries, the condition was an obstacle like any other to be overcome. As extraordinary as it may seem, Tuhin taught himself to fix a pen between his jaws and now writes as efficiently as any other student in his class. When on the computer, he uses his lips to operate the keyboard. "I have been operating a computer for last seven years and I am now going to master programming in C, C++, Java, and HTML languages," a proud Tuhin says. What is exceptional is that he has so far refrained from availing any additional facility … Continue reading

While crossing a street in Houston in July 2013, Mallory Mayeux was hit by a drunk driver, thrown 45 feet through the air and sustained a serious brain injury. She was put into a medically-induced coma and at one point was not expected to survive. Now, almost four years after that near-fatal incident, Mallory is literally the poster child for the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth) and an innovative treatment using a patients own stem cells to repair their injured brain. Mallory, 32, is a native of Longbridge and the daughter of Steve and Vickie Mayeux of Longbridge. She is a 2002 graduate of Avoyelles High. It is very confusing to wake up in a different month and not be fully aware of what happened, Mallory said. This was a huge turning point in my life. I think of everything in my life as either before the accident or after the accident. While she is now fully recovered and living and working in Baton Rouge, her image is featured on a billboard at a busy Houston intersection as part of UTHealths ad campaign, entitled The many faces of UTHealth. The billboard was erected in early May and is … Continue reading

In BriefBioquark is about to begin a trial that will attempt to bringbrain-dead patients back to life using stem cells. However, thetrial is raising numerous scientific and ethical questions forother experts in the field. Back From The Dead Researchers seem to be setting their sights on increasinglylofty goals when it comes to the human body from the worlds first human head transplant, to fighting aging, and now reversing death altogether. Yes, you read that right. A company called Bioquarkhopes to bring people who have been declared clinically brain-dead back to life. The Philadelphia-based biotech company is expected to start on the project later this year. This trial was originally intended to go forward in 2016 in India, but regulators shut it down. Assuming this plan will be substantially similar, it will enroll 20 patients who will undergo various treatments. The stem cell injection will come first, with the stem cells isolated from that patients own blood or fat. Next, the protein blend gets injected directly into the spinal cord, which is intended to foster growth of new neurons. The laser therapy and nerve stimulation follow for 15 days, with the aim of prompting the neurons to make connections. Meanwhile, the … Continue reading

Biotechnology: An Overview – Good Herald

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

Application of technologies on biological systems, dead organisms and their derivatives and food and medicine can be broadly defined as biotechnology. It never had a particular definition since its applications and implementations on various other areas of science are enormous. From manipulating crops and plants to increase the yield to transfer of genes from one organism to the other biotechnology encompasses almost all the living and non-living entities on earth. With the drastic improvement in various machineries and equipments used in the processing of biological materials and the examining of microscopic organisms biotechnology has come a far way since the traditional days of fermentation like techniques, which also is a part of biotechnology. In the earlier times, biotechnologys application was limited to agriculture and in the production of fermented food products but with the discovery of newer and much complicated data comprising of the most smallest of structures that are measured in microns biotechnology has been found fruitful in the production of many useful products that improves the quality of life of mankind. The categories of science like genetic engineering, animal cell culture, plant cell culture, microbiology, molecular biology, cytogenetics, cryopreservation, bioprocessing, biochemistry, cell biology, embryology, immunology and bioinformatics all … Continue reading
