Lack of collaboration hampers biotechnology effectiveness Experts – TheNewsGuru

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

Biotechnology experts say lack of collaboration in the face of limited resources will hamper the efficiency and effectiveness of the use and application of biotechnology in Nigeria. The experts told the News Agency of Nigeria in separate interviews on Friday in Abuja that only synergy would help the nation achieve food security. Dr Rufus Ebegba, the Director-General, National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), said that modern biotechnology was becoming increasingly important in addressing emerging food security, social and economic challenges. With its perceived and real unintended consequences, regulatory agencies and stakeholders must unite with a sense of purpose, vision, mission and determination to ensure that our nation reap the benefits of biotechnology. We have an excellent working relationship with, and Memorandums of Understanding with agencies like NAFDAC, SON, the Nigerian Customs Services, NABDA, ARCN, Ministries of Environment, Health and others. We have been organising workshops and involved in seminars that encourages effective collaboration with other regulatory Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on the use and application of biotechnology. This is part of our effort to keep Nigerians abreast of laid down internationally accepted procedures for verification of GM foods and Feed Safety; and determine the future activities to build necessary capacity … Continue reading

Commercializing structural biology knowledge can save money and speed drug discovery – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

June 2, 2017 by Grove Potter Artem Evdokimov, the CEO and chief science officer at HarkerBIO. Credit: Douglas Levere HarkerBIO is a "shining star" in the growing biotech ecosystem taking shape on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The small structural biology company determines 3-D structures of proteins for drug and biotech companies. That may sound straightforward even simple but the process is something right out of Star Trek. HarkerBIO uses sophisticated biochemical techniques, supercomputing power and laboratory expertise to decipher the giant, complex structures of proteins. The company then uses that information to help pharmaceutical companies sleuth out sites where drug-like molecules may bind, eventually creating molecules for new medicines. Biotech companies, meanwhile, use the structural data to improve enzyme catalysts that hasten difficult chemical transformations. HarkerBIO was formed in 2015 by Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, which is home to the Department of Structural Biology at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB, to commercialize Hauptman-Woodward's expertise in X-ray crystallography. It now has 14 employees, participates in the START-UP NY economic development program and has a partnership with Albany Molecular Research Inc., a contract research and manufacturing organization with a lab on the medical campus. How to Make Money From Engineered Biology — The Motley Fool – Motley Fool

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

The first wave of publicly traded engineered biology companies hasn't exactly served as a shining example for the field. Unrealistic expectations, unrivaled mismanagement, poor investments, awful technology and business strategies, and worse have pushed several companies to the brink of insolvency. If industrial biotech companies such as Gevo, Amyris, and TerraVia haven't considered bankruptcy or selling off assets, then they're simply operating in denial. Each has reduced the hard-earned money of investors to pennies on the dollar. Meanwhile, the one public company that has avoided these missteps has problems of its own. The very public face-plants and lack of meaningful execution have had broader consequences for the field. Even the most promising private companies have no firm plans to go public anytime soon. Meanwhile, many deep-pocketed companies in the industries that could potentially benefit from engineered biology have been burned too many times to take the technologies seriously, which has threatened large sources of much-needed funding for platforms looking to make a commercial splash. That said, there may be a relatively low-risk strategy for patient investors that want to make money from engineered biology. Image source: Getty Images. ‘Ballot box biology’ takes over from science – Albuquerque Journal

.......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... Trappers responded with outrageous claims, charging that the initiative was backed by out-of-state animal rights extremists who were uninformed about wildlife. Opponents of trapping, they claimed, were trying to destroy our way of life. And this was just the beginning: Once they stop trapping, they will come after hunting, and fishing, and ranching, and logging. Many of my fellow hunters also defended trapping, repeating the same arguments. When it comes to predators like wolves or bears, its all black-and-white to some people. Youre either one of us or one of them and there is little room for rational discussion; if you dont agree with them, they attack with fervor. During the trapping debate, hunting organizations dusted off the ballot-box biology defense, saying that such decisions should be made by wildlife professionals whose opinions are based on science, not by citizens who are acting out of emotion. We hunters love to claim that our approach to wildlife management is based on science. And, of course, it should be, but too often its not. The Idaho Fish and Game Department conducts aerial shooting of … Continue reading

Anatomy of the collusion lie – Power Line (blog)

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

Our friends at that American Greatness site are pushing back on the alleged collusion scandal narrative. Andy McCarthys Real collusion was the first in a series. Brandon Weichert and Chris Buskirks The anatomy of a lie (i.e., the Trump-Russia collusion scandal) is the second. It aims to tell how the Russia story evolved from a campaign talking point into a witch hunt in search of a crime. Weichert and Buskirk have also produced a 30-minute video to accompany their anatomy; the video is embedded in their essay. The Weichert/Buskirk anatomy compiles a substantial amount of information and turns it into a narrative with links to relevant source materials. The video gives a timeline documenting how the claim that Donald Trump colluded with Russia in order to steal the 2016 U.S. presidential election evolved. It argues the falsity of the claims of collusion. By contrast, evidence points both to the corruption of Hillary Clinton with her email server and the Clinton Global Initiative as well as the Obama administrations abuse of power to spy on citizens working for the Trump campaign. Cops hunt suspect that mocked, sucker punched man with cerebral palsy – Starcasm.net

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

Police in Pennsylvania are on the hunt for a culprit who was caught on camera mocking and then sucker punching a man with cerebral palsy. The Chester County District Attorney released the impossibly offensive video of the May 10 incident that was captured by security cameras at a West Chester, Pennsylvania gas station. Watch as the attacker, later identified as 29-year-old Barry Baker, relentlessly mocks and then punches the man with cerebral palsy for no reason: Baker was found, arrested on May 22 and charged with assault. His bail was set at 10% of $25,000 which he posted. Now Baker, who became public enemy number one online after the story and video circulated, is wanted by multiple law enforcement agencies. The West Chester Patch reports that warrants have been issued for Baker after he failed to appear for charges stemming from this assault AND a seperate hearing for a domestic relations matter. The Mercury revealed that Baker, who owned a lawn service company that got hammered with brutal reviews via Yelp by people angered over his assault, has a lengthy criminal history that included desecration charges after he stole more than 200 military flag holders from the graves of military … Continue reading

Spinal Cord Injury | SpinalCord.com

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

A spinal cord injury is the result of damage to any portion of the spinal cord or the nerves at the base of the spine. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve fibers and tissue which lies within spine forming the brains connection to the body. Damage to any part of the spinal cord can impact sensory, motor, and reflex capabilities if the brain is unable to send information past the location of the injury. The higher the injury occurs, the more severe the damage. The level of completeness can also impact severity though no two people have the same prognosis for a spinal cord injury. The spinal cord and the brain make up the bodys central nervous system. The central nervous system is thought to be the most important of all body systems. The spinal cord is encased within ring-shaped bones called vertebrae. Both the spinal cord and the corresponding vertebrae are covered with a protective membrane which together form the spinal column (or backbone). The spinal cord itself contains an array of nerve cell bodies (grey matter) and axons (white matter) running from the brain to the body with peripheral nerves exiting at openings throughout the vertebrae. … Continue reading
