Range of symptoms helped by bio-identical hormone pellets – FOX 13 News, Tampa Bay

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2017

TAMPA (FOX 13) - Five years ago, 49-year-old Angus Mickler says he lost his drive to exercise. A blood test found his testosterone level was a third of what it should be for his age. "I'd get up in the mornings and not have any energy at all," he remembers. And Alex Peterson had typical menopausal symptoms like sleeplessness, anxiety, and moodiness as her hormone levels dropped. Medication helped but then her hands began to ache. "It got to where I couldn't do things like easily open door knobs or open up a jar so I went to a couple of surgeons and they said I had carpal tunnel. Then my feet started hurting and I remember thinking, 'There is a root cause for all of this,'" she says. Peterson's hormoneswere also low. Many patients like Mickler and Peterson now have a place to turn for relief. Both chose a treatment growing in popularity called bio-identical hormone pellets, which are made from soy plants. Spectra Wellness nurse practitioner Jaclyn Hurang is caring for both Mickler and Peterson. She says hormone pellets aren't new but as younger generations age, they discover these treatments for the first time. "Hormone pellets have been … Continue reading

(CNN) Here is some background information about stem cells. Scientists believe that stem cell research can be used to treat medical conditions including Parkinsons disease, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. About Stem Cells:Stem cell research focuses on embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Stem cells have two characteristics that differentiate them from other types of cells:- Stem cells are unspecialized cells that replicate themselves for long periods through cell division.- Under certain physiologic or experimental conditions, stem cells can be induced to become mature cells with special functions such as the beating cells of the heart muscle or insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. There are four classes of stem cells: totipotent, multipotent, pluripotent, and unipotent.- Totipotent stem cells that develop into cells that make up all the cells in an embryo and fetus. (Ex: The zygote/fertilized egg and the cells at the very early stages following fertilization are considered totipotent)- Multipotent stem cells can give rise to multiple types of cells, but all within a particular tissue, organ, or physiological system. (Ex: blood-forming stem cells/bone marrow cells, most often referred to as adult stem cells)- Pluripotent stem cells (ex: embryonic stem cells) … Continue reading

Looking at the smoothly blended smoky shadow on Victoria Aparicios eyelids, no one would ever know her mother once applied all her makeup. Looking at her flawless red lipstick, no one would ever know Victoria once struggled to use her own hands. Born four months premature, she wasnt expected to survive and if she did, doctors said Victoria would most likely suffer crippling disabilities. They werent sure sure how much damage her brain sustained, nor did they know how severe her cerebral palsy would be. Just last month, Victoria, 18, graduated with honors from St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine and dreams of becoming a makeup artist. So, shes a miracle, said Cynthia Aparicio, her mother. [Her graduation] is bittersweet, and probably every parent says that, but especially because of Victorias journey. Ive had to be there so much. Its amazing to see, but its going to be really hard to let go. Her mother and her father, Victor, wont have to let go just yet. Victoria plans to attend Daytona State College for business, and the college has a branch in Victorias hometown. How Marijuana Can Help Those With Traumatic Brain Injury – The Fresh Toast

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2017

There is growing public interest in marijuana as a useful medicine for a number of physiologic conditions. It should be no surprise that more doctors are asking if the noble weed may hold some answer for those with traumatic brain injury that currently need better therapeutic solutions. A recent study shines a brighter light on this possibility. Traumatic brain injury or TBI is just that, damage to the brain caused by an external force. Although much of the mention of this condition has been recently related to football players and veterans of war zones, it affects people of ages, from all walks of life. Although the brain is housed in our hard, protective skull, even one sudden blow can mean profound changes for an individual. Over 2 million visits to the ER each year are related to TBI events like concussion from auto accidents, falls and assaults. Falls account in 50 percent of TBI in children under 14 years old and over 60 percent of seniors. It is the leading cause of disability and premature death in the world. The economic impact in the US alone has been estimated at $75 billion a year. The impact to peoples lives cannot … Continue reading

New drug approved to treat multiple sclerosis a game changer – Fox 32 Chicago

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2017

FOX 32 NEWS - Its being called a game changer: a newly approved drug to treat multiple sclerosis. Rush University Medical Center is the first hospital in Illinois to offer the treatment, and it could provide hope for patients suffering from the devastating disease. Its a new therapy for multiple sclerosis called Ocrevus and it was just approved two months ago by the FDA. Testing has showed some pretty impressive results. "Once the person started on Ocrevus, then they have a 90-plus percent less in new lesions, meaning the diseases are pretty much brought to a halt." This is exciting news for doctors and patients. This new drug not only treats the most common form of MS, called Relapsing MS, but is the first and only therapy for Primary Progressive MS, which doctors haven't been able to treat properly before. It works by slowing the disease's progression and reducing the effects of some symptoms. MS attacks the body's central nervous system, disrupting the flow of information from the brain through the spine and breaking down neurological functions. The results can be devastating. Symptoms can include extreme fatigue, slurred speech, tremors, muscle weakness and vision problems. There is no cure and … Continue reading

World-first trials have been launched to treat Parkinson’s and … – ScienceAlert

Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2017

In a world first, surgeons in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou are planning to inject stem cells derived from human embryos into the brains of patients with Parkinson's disease with the aim of treating their debilitating symptoms. Meanwhile, another medical team in the same city is aiming to target vision loss using embryonic stem cells (ESC) to replace lost cells in the retina, marking a new direction in China in the wake of major changes in how the country regulates stem cell treatments. While similar treatments on Parkinson's patients have already been tested in Australia, those trials relied on cells taken from eggs that were forced to divide without first being fertilised in an effort to circumvent any ethical concerns. Stem cells are a little like blank slates that are yet to take on a specific task. If you rewind the clock on any of your body's tissues, its cells will become less specialised, until you're left with a cell with a lot of potential to become nearly anything. In the case of both kinds of embryonic stem cells, divided egg cells are subjected to various treatments to encourage them to develop into replacement cells that could treat a condition … Continue reading

Sioux Falls Man Received Treatment Using His Own Fat Stem Cells – KDLT News (blog)

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. Doctors say a breakthrough in stem cell research from over a decade ago could someday replace traditional medicine. A procedure using a patients own fat stem cells has already helped many people across the world, but these types of procedures havent been approved in the U.S. Thats why one Sioux Falls man and some Sanford doctors traveled to Munich, Germany last year. Imagine a more natural way of treating pain or even a more advanced treatment for cancer. What if I told you common ailments like chronic back pain or arthritis could be healed? Thats what doctors say treatments using a patients own stem cells could do. One of those doctors is German Doctor Eckhard Alt. The next generation of medicine would be to learn how we can heal ourselves, without artificial implants, without drugs, that we use the regenerative power of our own body, said Dr. Alt. This might sound like something out of a Sci-Fi movie, but Dr. Alt says this type of practice is already being brought to clinical practice. In nature, tells you there is a regenerative potential in all of us. If you look at the lizard, you cut off the tail, … Continue reading
