Biology Professor Greg Florant honored by NIH group for minority researchers – Colorado State University News (press release)

Posted: Published on June 1st, 2017

Around campus, Department of Biology Professor Gregory Florant might be best known for his work with marmots and other hibernating mammals in the College of Natural Sciences. But outside of Colorado State University, he is a founding and active member of the National Institutes of Healths Network of Minority Health Research Investigators. His leadership role in the group was recognized this spring with the NMRI Medallion at that groups annual meeting in Bethesda, Maryland. Florant was among the original handful of underrepresented researchers in the field who, 15 years ago, looked around and saw a need for networking and mentoring among their peers. And they got to work, creating the NMRI with funding from the NIH and that groups National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. What started as a group of 15 or 20 M.D.s and Ph.D.s has grown into an organization of hundreds of researchers at all stages in their careers. We have members who are National Academy of Sciences members, and we have members who are postdocs who are just starting out. Nevertheless, Florant said, we feel like were all on a level playing field. He said, there are no hidden agendas, you dont have … Continue reading

Good News for New Assisted Reproductive Tech – Research Horizons

Posted: Published on June 1st, 2017

Posted June 1, 2017 Atlanta, GA Genetic mitochondrial disease is present in about 1 out of every 5,000 babies, who face insurmountable odds from the moment they are born. Thats because at present, there is no cure for these conditions. But a new assisted reproductive technology that prevents the transmission of mitochondrial disease from mother to child holds great promise. Mitochondrial replacement (MR) therapy combines the nuclear DNA from the mother with healthy mitochondria from a donor egg to create a healthy new egg that can be fertilized with the fathers sperm, thereby yielding a three-person baby. Last year, the worlds first three-person baby resulting from this method was delivered by U.S. doctors in Mexico, where there are no laws prohibiting the procedure. The healthy newborn got about 0.1 percent of his DNA from the donor, and the vast majority of his genetic code specifying eye color, hair, etc. from his mom and dad. Mitochondrial DNA comprises just a small percentage of our total DNA, containing just 37 of the 20,000 to 25,000 protein-coding genes in our body. And while nuclear DNA comes from both parents, our mitochondrial DNA comes directly from our mothers, so my mitochondrial genome will be … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Goal: Ola's Dagger – Massive Report

Posted: Published on June 1st, 2017

Welcome to the Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal (or near goal) from the previous weeks Columbus Crew SC match. For match 15 of the 2017 MLS Season, we take a look at Ola Kamaras 59th minute goal that put Columbus Crew SC up 3-0 as the final goal in a win over the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday. Heres a look at the finish from the Crew SC striker. Crew SC came out firing on all cylinders, scoring two first-half goals and putting Seattle on the defensive almost immediately. The Black & Gold defense held firm for much of the match, with Zack Steffen playing one of his best games to date. Seattle, without Chad Marshall, Clint Dempsey, Jordan Morris and most of their first choice backline, struggled to slow the Columbus attack. I chose this goal instead of one of Columbus first two, because this third goal is the epitome of the Berhalter system working at its best. Specifically, this goal features a 10-pass sequence (with every pass on the ground), where nine different Crew SC players touched the ball, which traveled from the right side of the field to the left side, and … Continue reading

Are These Two Of The New Characters In 'Grey's Anatomy' Firefighter Spinoff? – moviepilot.com

Posted: Published on June 1st, 2017

A few weeks ago, Grey's Anatomy fans were overjoyed to hear that Shonda Rhimes is expanding the Grey's universe with a spinoff series focusing on the personal and professional lives of Seattle's firefighters. The yet-to-be-titled series is the second spinoff from Grey's Anatomy Private Practice ran from 2007 until 2013 and will be executive produced by both Rhimes and Betsy Beers. Long time #GreysAnatomy writer and producer, Stacy McKee, will act as showrunner. But while we've been given details about the crew of what will no doubt become a popular series, the information about the characters of the series has been less forthcoming. However, one hint we have been given came during the Grey's Anatomy Season 13 finale, when the hospital required evacuation during the explosion. As fans will remember, part of the hospital exploded after Stephanie's plan to set the rapist on fire went awry. With the hospital quickly burning, firefighters were soon on the scene to battle the flames and help rescue patients and doctors. Given the news about the firefighter spinoff series was announced shortly before the finale aired, it was implied that some of the firefighters from the Season 13 finale will appear in new series. … Continue reading

Ulcerative Colitis Market and Forecast Analysis Report 2017: Focus on Pipeline, Marketed Drugs, Epidemiology … – GlobeNewswire (press release)

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2017

May 30, 2017 05:20 ET | Source: Research and Markets Dublin, May 30, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Ulcerative Colitis Market and Forecast Analysis" report to their offering. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that is characterized by inappropriate diffuse inflammation of the rectal and colonic mucosa, which occurs in the innermost layer of the intestinal lining. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic, incurable disease with low mortality that is generally diagnosed in adolescence and early adulthood. Ulcerative colitis is currently an idiopathic condition, the pathogenesis of which is yet to be fully elucidated. However, it is known to involve an interaction between genetics, the immune system, and environmental factors. Risk factors include ethnicity, family history, antibiotic or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent use, and diet. Incidence and prevalence have been increasing over the past two decades in most regions of the world. It is estimated that in 2015, there were 2.1 million diagnosed prevalent cases of ulcerative colitis in the US, Japan, and five major EU markets (France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK). Over 2015-35, the number of prevalent cases is expected to increase to 2.5 million (16.6% increase). Key Topics … Continue reading

Celgene Accesses IMIDomics Immune-Mediated Inflammatory … – Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2017

Celgene established a collaboration with IMIDomics centered on access to the Spanish firm'sclinical and molecularimmune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs)database to help identify new targets and biomarkers, support drug and companion diagnostic development, and help stratify patients for clinical trials. No financial details were disclosed, except to note that IMIDomics will receive project funding and potential royalties on products resulting from the collaboration. IMIDomics database provides a powerful window into the clinical and molecular underpinnings of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, said Douglas E. Bassett, Ph.D., vp informatics and knowledge utilization at Celgene. This collaboration has exciting potential to impact our ongoing efforts to innovate breakthrough therapies for unmet medical needs in this space, and were enthusiastic to team up with IMIDomics to unlock the full potential of this resource for patient benefit. IMIDomics is a spinout from the Vall d'Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) at the Vall d'Hebron Hospital Campus in Barcelona. The firm is combining what it claims is one of the largest IMID biobanks with clinical expertise and high-throughput genomic and genetic analysis to identify and develop biomarkers and targets for IMID monitoring and treatment. The organizations focus is on rheumatoid arthritis, Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and systemic lupus … Continue reading
