Leeds mum praises ‘life saving’ MS treatment in charity video – Yorkshire Evening Post

Posted: Published on May 30th, 2017

13:07 Tuesday 30 May 2017 A mother from Leeds has spoken out about her journey with multiple sclerosis (MS) and how treatment has saved her life in a video to support the MS Societys Kiss Goodbye to MS campaign. Karen Ayres hopes her story will inspire people to raise vital funds for MS research. The 39-year-old, who teaches at Leeds University, lives in Weetwood with her partner Andrew and two children Milla, whos 4, and Sonny whos 14 months. Karen first started experiencing strange symptoms when she was just 24. She was on a night out with work colleagues and fell to the floor in a night club. Then a few weeks later while in the bathroom, she collapsed again. Though this time, she was left paralysed from the neck down Karen spent the following three months in hospital where her condition worsened. The rapid onset of symptoms made her weight drop dramatically to less than six stone. She had to be fed, washed and dressed, and her limbs encased in casts at night to prevent her bones from bending. She said: I had lost all control over her body. It was the scariest thing that you can imagine. It … Continue reading

Provia Labs Launches Library of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Research Samples Sourced from Dental, Adipose, Placental … – PR Web (press release)

Posted: Published on May 30th, 2017

Bioinformant Littleton, MA (PRWEB) May 30, 2017 Provia Laboratories LLC (Provia), a leader in cGMP autologous cell and tissue services, announced the launch of a comprehensive library of stem cell material available for researchers. The library includes ready to ship mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from dental pulp (DPSC) found in human third molars or human exfoliated deciduous teeth, as well as from follicular tissue, adipose tissue, placental tissue, and umbilical cord tissue. Provia is currently developing inventory of MSCs from bone marrow, chorionic villi, and amniotic fluid. MSCs are a significant source of stem cells that are known to express important developmental and pluripotency transcription factors such as oct4, sox2, klf4, nanog, and c-myc. Flow cytometric analysis shows that these cells are positive for CD73, CD90, CD105, and negative for CD34 and CD45. Under appropriate culture conditions, MSCs have been shown to differentiate into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic cells. MSCs have also been shown under specific published conditions to have neuromuscular and endocrine differentiation capabilities. Based on our current understanding these cells have the potential for use in regenerative medicine - for tissue repair, tissue replacement, and are capable of regulating immune response. MSCs are currently the most published type … Continue reading

Digital-to-Biological Converter for On-Demand Production of Biologics Developed by Synthetic Genomics, Inc. – PR Newswire (press release)

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

To demonstrate feasibility, researchers digitally transmitted a file with DNA sequence information to the DBC. The DBC converted that digital sequence into oligonucleotides, and utilized synthetic biology tools developed by Synthetic Genomics such as gene synthesis, error correction, and Gibson Assembly methods to create large and complex DNA constructs with high fidelity. Utilizing this DNA as a template, the DBC further produced a series of biological materials without any human intervention, such as RNA, proteins, and viral particles. "The concept of a DBC presents a new paradigm for the manufacturing of biological materials all starting from transmitted DNA sequences," said Daniel Gibson, Ph.D., vice president of DNA technology at Synthetic Genomics and senior author of the study. "It is easy to imagine numerous high value applications for rapid on-demand production of biological materials in healthcare, such as creating truly personalized therapeutics at a patient's bedside and rapidly generating custom vaccines to counter an infectious disease outbreak." Biological products created on the DBC included DNA templates for an influenza vaccine, an RNA-based vaccine, antibody polypeptides, and a bacteriophage. The antibody polypeptides synthesized by the DBC included abatacept, ranibizumab, and trastuzumab. Biologics were created in under 2 days, which is several weeks … Continue reading

Software simplified – Nature.com

Project Twins In 2015, geneticist Guy Reeves was trying to configure a free software system called Galaxy to get his bioinformatics projects off the ground. After a day or two of frustration, he asked members of his IT department for help. They installed Docker, a technology for simulating computational environments, which enabled him to use a special version of Galaxy that came packaged with everything he needed called a container. A slight tweak to the Galaxy settings, and he was done before lunch. Reeves, at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pln, Germany, is one of many scientists adopting containers. As science becomes ever more data intensive, more software is being written to extract knowledge from those data. But few researchers have the time and computational know-how to make full use of it. Containers, packages of software code and the computational environment to run it, can close that gap. They help researchers to use a wider array of software, accelerate experiments and promote reproducibility. Containers are essentially lightweight, configurable virtual machines simulated versions of an operating system and its hardware, which allow software developers to share their computational environments. Researchers use them to distribute complicated scientific software systems, … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Goal: Morrow Makes it 2 – Massive Report

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

Welcome to the Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal (or near goal) from Columbus Crew SCs previous match. For match 14 of the 2017 MLS Season, we take a look at Toronto FC midfielder Justin Morrows 39th minute goal that put Toronto up 2-0 as part of the 5-0 win over Crew SC on Friday. Heres a look at the finish from the Toronto FC midfielder. It was hard to pick just one of Torontos five goals to break down, but Morrows goal is indicative of Torontos successful strategy in this match. When Columbus pushed up the field, Toronto looked to counter quickly, often playing a long pass into the Crew SC defense, looking to build off of a turnover or a win of possession by TFC. During the first half, Crew SC lined up in what the official lineup called a 4-4-2, with Wil Trapp and Federico Higuain playing together in the midfield. This 4-4-2 sacrificed a defensive midfielder for an attacker, and left Trapp with much more ground to cover. As the lone defensive midfielder, Trapp was often the only player in the middle of the field, leaving acres of space for Toronto … Continue reading

Biology: Climate change affecting spring greening and migratory birds – The Columbus Dispatch

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

The early bird gets the worm. But what happens when the worm is even earlier than the bird? In that case, some familiar backyard bird species dont get enough worms to feed their chicks. That's the conclusion of a recent study of changes in spring green-up dates across North America and the arrival dates of spring migratory bird species in those areas. Biologist Stephen Mayor, at the Florida Museum of Natural History of the University of Florida, and nine colleagues from other institutions reported their findings online this month in the journal Scientific Advances. The research team used satellite images to detect the date that vegetation in sample areas began to green up at the start of the growing season. They also used first sightings of the year of common migratory birds at specific locations as reported by eBird, a citizen-science website. The dates allowed the biologists to calculate when each species arrived at its breeding grounds. The team compared plant green-up and bird arrival data from 2001 to 2012 across North America. Green-up date and arrival time of 48 bird species studied usually moved in the same direction. In areas where plants began to leaf out earlier, migratory birds … Continue reading
