Standout biology senior at C of I receives research award – Idaho Press-Tribune

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

CALDWELL When biology major Maggie Brown was a freshman at the College of Idaho, she was approached by Biology Professor Sara Heggland with a proposal the chance to become involved in cutting edge research as an undergraduate on the largely unexplored topic of electronic cigarettes. I was shocked I could have a research opportunity like that, Brown said. I knew when I was looking at colleges, having the opportunity to do research was a high priority for me. The College of Idaho gave me that opportunity. Brown became one of the first students to work with Heggland researching the effects of electronic cigarettes on bone health, spending more than three years performing experiments and gathering data. Now a senior with a completed honors thesis for her undergraduate research, Brown recently won Best Oral Presentation in Cell and Developmental Biology at the 42nd annual West Coast Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference. Its great to see Maggie recognized, Heggland said. She was my first student on this e-cig project, and shes done a lot of foundational work that new students will be able to build upon. She has a great project with a compelling story, and she presents it with such passion, … Continue reading

Science in the sky: Anatomy of a rainbow – WRAL.com

By Tony Rice As summer unofficially begins this weekend (summer officially begins here in the northern hemisphere at the solstice, June 21) weve already begun seeing the staple of summer weather in our area: isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. As those storms pass, we are often treated to rainbows. That is just what happened Thursday evening when a series of small storms passed through the area. Occasional sprinkles didn't impede preparations for Apex High School's year-ending pops concert at Koka Booth Amphitheater in Cary. Showtime was a different story. The combined choirs were barely into the opening song when a small but heavy storm put the show on pause. Fifteen minutes later, the crowd was rewarded with one of the most brilliant rainbows Ive seen. You probably know that rainbows are produced by sunlight passing through a raindrop. The light is bent or refracted because the denser water causes the light to travel more slowly. That light, now separated into its component wavelengths (colors), is reflected off the back of the raindrop and back out producing a colorful arc across the sky. Rainbows are actually circles, centered on a point directly opposite the sun. We see just the … Continue reading

The anatomy of caliphate colonialism (2) – Vanguard

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

By Douglas Anele Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, the dominant political parties that emerged in Nigeria before independence and played prominent roles in defining the direction of her future political evolution were largely regional parties. For instance, in northern Nigeria, the political landscape was dominated by the Northern Peoples Congress (NPC), whose catchphrase One North, One People, accurately encapsulates its core agenda. It was unabashedly a political organisation specifically set up to cater for the concerns of northern region alone, particularly the interests of the domineering feudalist conservative elite, to the extent that it refused to present candidates for elections in the south. Interestingly, NPC leaders were surprised that its gesture of separateness was not reciprocated by political parties in the south. Consequently, they strongly resisted efforts by parties in southern Nigeria to field candidates in the north, which Balewa saw as appropriate to response to the invasion of northern region by southerners, and considered southern politicians campaigning in northern Nigeria an unwelcome challenge to norths territorial sovereignty. Action Group (AG) was the major party in western Nigeria, whereas the first truly national political party was the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC), although it eventually mutated into a … Continue reading

Currently there is no curative treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy however symptomatic treatment approaches such as pain alleviating drugs and steroids to slow down the progression of disease are recommended by majority of physicians. Long-term response of different Botulinum toxins in refractory neurogenic detrusor overactivity due to spinal cord … – UroToday

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

To assess the response in spinal cord injured patients alternatively treated with different types and dosages of Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) over 15 years. Patients who underwent first BoNT/A from 1999-2001 and practiced intermittent catheterization were included. Baseline 3-day bladder diary (BD) and urodynamics were collected. BoNT/A failure was defined when patients asked for re-injection 3 months post-treatment. Criteria for re-injection was at least one daily episode of urinary incontinence at BD. Before re-injection, patients were asked if they had reached 6 months of dryness without antimuscarinics (YES response). Overall, 32/60 (53.4%) "No failure" (NF) group; 16 (26.6%) "occasional failure" (OF) and 12 (20%) "consecutive failure" (CF) were included. A total of 822 BoNT/A infiltrations were performed. The mean interval from previous injection to treatment re-scheduling was 8 months. No significant differences between treatments were found within the three groups (p>0.05). The percentage of YES responses increased from 19% (AboBoNT/A 500IU) to 29 % (OnaBoNT/A 300IU) in NF, and from 18% (AboBoNT/A 500IU) to 25% (OnaBoNT/A 300IU) for OF. Five NF cases (15.6%) maintained 6 months of dryness after each injection. Among the baseline variables, only low compliance (< 20mL/cmH2O) was found as predictor for failure (p=0.006). Long term … Continue reading

The woman who sparked a cross-border search when she took her son from a Brisbane hospital, has defended her child's low weight. Video: Cini Walker via Facebook Chase Walker is now showing improvement, his parents say. Picture: Facebook. A DESPERATE couple accused of snatching their severely disabled four-year-old son from a Queensland Hospital last month are living in a controversial church, where the youngster is being given cannabis oil by a deregistered doctor. Cini Walker and Marc Steven made national headlines when they were accused of taking little Chase Walker from hospital where he was being treated for spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Ms Walker and Mr Steven stopped vaccinating their son after the age of two, believing the injections were causing him seizures. The parents advocate the use of medicinal marijuana and an organic diet, which they say has vastly improved his condition and reduced his epileptic seizures. However, Chase has continually been admitted to hospital, with doctors often citing malnutrition. Ms Walker claims the hospital food and western medicine has had an adverse impact on her sons health. The parents told the Seven Networks Sunday Night they recently began living at Newcastles Church of Ubuntu, where they had been … Continue reading

Davenport man recovering from traumatic brain injury – Quad-Cities Online

DAVENPORT Sept. 18, 6:45 p.m. The date and time are not memories for Rod Becker. He learned the details after the fact. Mr. Becker and his wife, Kathy, were walking around Vander Veer Botanical Park in Davenport only a block from their home. They were crossing Harrison Street when a car going about 35 miles per hour struck both of them Rod Becker suffered life-threatening injuries. I don't remember any of this," he said. "I always walked closest to the traffic, but Kathy got hit, too. I was up on the cars windshield. Kathy looked like she went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Mr. Becker, 55, sustained a traumatic brain injury and was in a coma. He was airlifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City where he was diagnosed with a skull fracture, bleeding in his brain and a blood clot. The day after the accident, his wife, his son, Zachary, and his niece, Gillian, a nurse, heard a frank, disheartening prognosis. The doctors said he might not ever wake from the semi-coma, he may never recover from the brain injury, or he may need months of inpatient rehabilitation and still might not gain full function," … Continue reading
