Hormone replacement therapy, older age at menopause tied to hearing loss – Guardian (blog)

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

Hearing loss has been linked to several factors associated with menopause, a new study says. One factor is your age at menopause. An older age is tied to a higher risk of hearing troubles. And, a second factor is the use of oral hormone therapy to ease some of the symptoms of menopause. The researchers also found that the longer a woman used hormone therapy, the greater the odds of hearing issues. Hearing loss was already known to be more common in women after menopause, a time when natural hormone levels drop. Because of this, doctors had suspected that the use of oral hormone therapy might offer some protection against menopause-linked hearing loss, the researchers said. The finding from this observational study that women who underwent menopause at a later age and used oral hormone therapy had greater hearing loss was unexpected but should lead to more testing in a randomized, clinical trial, JoAnn Pinkerton, executive director of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), said in news release from the group. The current study can only show an association between hearing loss and hormone therapy or older age at menopause. It wasnt designed to prove a cause-and-effect relationship. The study … Continue reading

All These Cancer Screenings Probably Won’t Save Your Life – Daily Beast

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2017

Some cancers are easy to prevent. For example, sun block can prevent skin cancer; the hepatitis B vaccine can prevent liver cancer; the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine can prevent cervical cancer as well as head, neck, anal, and genital cancers; and cessation of cigarette smoking can prevent lung cancer. Other cancers are harder to prevent, like those of the prostate, thyroid, and breast. The reason, as explained by Gilbert Welch, a professor of medicine at Dartmouth, is best explained using a barnyard analogy. Imagine, writes Welch, that three animals in a barn are trying to escape: a bird, a turtle, and a rabbit. When you open the door, they escape at different rates. The bird, which will fly out before you can close the door, is analogous to a cancer that is so aggressive that it will kill you no matter what you do. Even if detected early, it doesnt matterthis cancer is invariably fatal. The turtle, which is so plodding that it will never escape, is analogous to a cancer that is so slow growing, so non-virulent that it is never fatal. People die with this cancer, not from it. The rabbit, which can be caught if the door … Continue reading

Images: Sherman et al DOI: 10.1186/s13287-017-0577-3 Stem cells taken from bone marrow may substantially improve corneal wound healing in horses, evidence from a study suggests. Eye injuries are common in horses, most likely because of the size of their eyes and their prominent position in the head. Researchers from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine conducted a laboratory experiment to assess the performance of stem cells taken from bone marrow in the breast bone of five horses. Amanda Sherman and her colleagues, writing in Stem Cell Research & Therapy, described the process by which they collected and isolated the autologous bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells for their study. Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent connective-tissue cells that can change into a variety … Continue reading

Why Abercrombie & Fitch, Triumph Group, and Puma Biotechnology Jumped Today – Motley Fool

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

Wednesday was a good day for stocks, and the Dow Jones Industrials and S&P 500 both climbed through milestone levels. Most market participants attributed the positive sentiment to the Federal Reserve, which released the minutes of its latest monetary policy meeting during the afternoon. The central bank revealed plans to clamp down on the size of its balance sheet, which it initially expanded in the aftermath of the financial crisis to provide liquidity to the bond market and additional stimulus to the U.S. economy. Investors were pleased that the Fed believes that it's no longer necessary to extend that level of monetary accommodation to the economy. In addition, some individual companies had extremely good news, and Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE:ANF), Triumph Group (NYSE:TGI), and Puma Biotechnology (NASDAQ:PBYI) were among the best performers on the day. Below, we'll look more closely at these stocks to tell you why they did so well. Shares of Abercrombie & Fitch climbed 6% in the wake of reports that the teen retailer might receive an acquisition bid from a consortium of investors. According to The Wall Street Journal(subscription required), industry peer American Eagle Outfitters (NYSE:AEO) and private equity company Cerberus Capital Management are looking at … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Trade: Don't Just Do Something, Sit There – TheStreet.com

Posted: Published on May 27th, 2017

A common mistake many traders make is thinking that they must be in constant motion, buying and selling every move in the market. We see people on the floor of exchanges yelling out their orders, or hyperactive traders flipping for pennies, and it gives us the impression that we should be in perpetual motion in order to gain an edge. There are times when traders need to move rapidly and make buy and sell decisions quickly, but effective trading also requires that there be periods of time when we sit patiently and do little. One of the hallmarks of good traders is that they can quickly make big and aggressive trades and then shift back to watchfully waiting as opportunities develop again. Most of the time, the best traders are doing very little actual trading. When they do act, they are decisive and aggressive and then they go back to sitting patiently while they do research and look for the next candidate for a trade. Some of the worst trades that we make are those that occur when we are bored and itching for action. Personally, I find that I have an inclination to hope for market pullbacks to shake … Continue reading
