Facebook video of inspirational British man with cerebral palsy cycling around Ireland is a hit – Irish Post

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Jack Thompson has already rode 284 miles from London to Liverpool. Picture: Facebook A London man with cerebral palsy is cycling around Ireland on a bicycle modified to fit with his needs. Jack Thompson began an initial 13-day journey from London to Liverpool on April 26, which saw him cover 284 miles in 12 separate rides. Earlier this week he boarded a ferry to Belfast to realise his goal of cycling across Ireland. Mr Thompson, who has suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, began cycling around five years ago as a way to get around in spite of his disability. Its taken me five years of progression to get to this stage, Mr Thompson told Ballymena native Sherman Wright in a video, which has now gone viral on Facebook. I originally started cycling because it was easier for me to cycle to the shops than walk to the shops. Last year, Mr Thompson cycled hundreds of miles from the Netherlands, through Germany and down into Austria. He said he had just arrived in Ireland and he was expecting his route to get a lot more hilly in the next few days. Asked about his first impressions of the Emerald Isle, … Continue reading

Picture: South China Morning Post/Zou Hongyan A man born with cerebral palsy in central China in 1988 has been admitted to Harvard University in the United States. Ding Ding, 29, nearly suffocated during a complication of his birth, which left him with his condition. Doctors in Hubei province in China suggested to his mother, Zou Hongyan, that she might give him up as a baby. They suggested it was futile to attempt to rescue him, as he would grow up disabled - even Ding Ding's father agreed. Zou insisted on saving her child, and divorced his father. Zou took up a number of jobs to support her son, including a college position, a job selling insurance and one as a protocol trainer. She took him to rehab sessions and learned therapy procedures for his condition, playing games and puzzles with him in an attempt to boost his intelligence. She told the South China Morning Post: I didnt want him to feel ashamed about this physical problems. Because he had inferior abilities in many areas, I was quite strict on him to work hard to catch up where he had difficulties. Ding Ding went on to graduate in 2011 with bachelor's … Continue reading

Pyruvate Reduces Brain Injury After Cardiac Arrest – PR Newswire (press release)

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

WASHINGTON, May 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ --An article published in Experimental Biology and Medicine (Volume 242, Issue 10, May, 2017) identifies a new treatment that may protect the brain from irreversible damage caused by cardiac arrest. The study, led by Dr. Robert Mallet, Professor of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases at University of North Texas Health Science Center, showed that administration of pyruvate, an energy fuel and antioxidant, preserved brain function during cardiac arrest in a swine model. The brain consumes enormous amounts of metabolic energy, and is utterly dependent on its blood supply to deliver energy-yielding fuels and oxygen. Consequently, interruptions in the brain's blood supply can cause devastating effects. The depletion of energy stores and accumulation of toxic metabolites damages brain cells and can cause permanent impairment of brain function. Methylglyoxal, a by-product of sugar metabolism, irreversibly damages proteins by a process termed glycation and accumulates in the brain when the oxygen supply is compromised. Glyoxalase, a special enzyme that decomposes methylglyoxal and prevents its accumulation, is also vulnerable to glycation. Thus, preventing the inactivation of glyoxalase could improve clinical outcomes for patients experiencing interruptions in the brain's blood supply. Pyruvate is a natural metabolite, and has been shown to … Continue reading

Pro Football Player Was Limited to Workers’ Comp for Brain Injury Claims, Louisiana District Court Decides – Law.com (subscription)

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

A federal district court in Louisiana has ruled that a professional arena football player could not assert intentional tort claims against the league stemming from concussions he allegedly had received but, rather, was limited to pursuing a workers compensation claim. The Case Lorenzo Breland alleged in the lawsuit he filed against Arena Football One, L.L.C. (AFO), which owns Arena Football League One, LLC (AFLO), and Louisiana Arena Football, L.L.C. (LAF), which owns the New Orleans Voodoo franchise, that he sustained a concussion in 2011 while employed as a professional arena football player for the Tulsa Talons, part of the AFO league. According to Mr. Breland, after the team doctor diagnosed him, the team encouraged him to return and he started the following game. Subsequently, Mr. Breland asserted, he played for the New Orleans Voodoo and sustained a severe blow to the head during a game on April 11, 2014, which caused a second concussion. Mr. Breland claimed that, after the 2014 concussion, he received inadequate medical attention and care and was pressured to return to playing football before he was fully rehabilitated. He alleged that, after complaining to the coach about his continued health problems, he was sent to a … Continue reading

Stroke, Migraine, & Depression New Side Effects of Common MS Treatment, Study Finds – Pharmaceutical Processing

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Researchers uncover potential risks of common MS treatment. In one of the most comprehensive studies to date, UBC researchers have identified potential adverse reactions of a commonly used multiple sclerosis drug. The study aimed to identify potential adverse events related to beta-interferon treatment for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis by analyzing health records of over 2,000 British Columbians with multiple sclerosis between 1995 and 2008. "Once a drug is released on the market, there are very few ways to systematically monitor adverse events," said Helen Tremlett, senior author of the study and a professor in the department of medicine at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health. "Clinical trials cannot identify all adverse effects of a drug treatment partly due to small sample sizes and relatively short follow-up periods." The study found an increased risk of events such as stroke, migraine and depression, as well as abnormalities in the blood with taking beta interferon for multiple sclerosis. "Beta interferons are generally thought of as having a favorable safety profile, especially compared to the newer therapies for multiple sclerosis. And that is still the case; our study does not change that," said Tremlett, Canada Research Chair in Neuroepidemiology. "However, very few studies had … Continue reading
