Don’t Use Combined Estrogen, Progestin for Chronic Conditions in Postmenopausal Women – AAFP News

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Furthermore, the task force recommended against the use of estrogen for the prevention of chronic conditions in postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy -- also a "D" recommendation. The median age for menopause is 51.3. Because the postmenopausal change in hormone levels can raise women's risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, osteoporosis and fractures, physicians previously recommended hormone therapy for these women. Menopausal hormone therapy refers to the use of estrogen and progestin in women with an intact uterus, or estrogen alone in women who have had their uterus removed, taken during or after menopause. Once the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) published its findings(www.nhlbi.nih.gov) that hormone therapy use is associated with serious adverse health effects, use of menopausal hormone therapy declined sharply. During the years 1988-1994, 44 percent of U.S. women said they use or had used hormone therapy; 4.7 percent said they used or had used it in 2010. "The benefits of using menopausal hormone therapy to prevent chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes do not outweigh the harms in women who have gone through menopause," said USPSTF member Maureen Phipps, M.D., M.P.H., in a news bulletin.(www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org) This draft recommendation is consistent with the USPSTF's … Continue reading

Stem-cell research a step closer to making blood donation redundant – Cosmos

Illustration showing blood stem and progenitor cells emerging from hemogenic endothelial cells. The left blue cells are emerging hematapoietic stem and progenitor cells. The red cells are red blood cells. OReilly Science Art When human embryonic stem cells lit up the worlds headlines in 1998, it seemed the era of spare organs and tissues would soon follow. One of the hopes was that these blank slate cells would fill the gap in the fraught supplies of blood banks by generating an endless supply of the different blood-cell types. Almost two decades on this dream is approaching reality, as two papers in Nature suggest. One team, led by George Daley of Boston Children's Hospital's Stem Cell Program, have trained human pluripotent stem cells (either derived from embryos or induced from skin cells) to do a fair job of replenishing a mouses blood supply. The other team, led by Shahin Rafii of Cornell University in New York, began with endothelial cells scraped from the lining of mouse blood vessels. After training, these cells did an even better job of replenishing a mouses blood supply. Both teams relied on genes introduced by viruses to train the cells. While the introduction of these foreign … Continue reading

Pope Francis to Huntington’s patients: You deserve respect and love – Catholic News Agency

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Vatican City, May 18, 2017 / 08:22 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis on Thursday offered a message of hope and love to patients with Huntingtons disease, a rare and incurable genetic brain disorder that causes intense suffering. According to organizers, it was the first time that a pope - or any world leader - had recognized the plight of those with the disease. In his speech, Francis said the fears and difficulties of people affected by Huntingtons disease have been surrounded with misunderstandings and barriers (for) far too long. In many cases the sick and their families have experienced the tragedy of shame, isolation and abandonment. Today, however, we are here because we want to say to ourselves and all the world: HIDDEN NO MORE! he said. This isnt just a slogan, but a commitment we must foster, he continued. The strength and conviction with which we pronounce these words derive precisely from what Jesus himself taught us, he said, noting that throughout his ministry, Jesus met many sick people; he took on their suffering; he tore down the walls of stigma and of marginalization that prevented so many of them from feeling respected and loved. Pope Francis spoke during … Continue reading

China agrees to review US biotechnology applications – Chemical & Engineering News

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

China will evaluate eight pending U.S. agricultural biotechnology product applications by the end of May, potentially opening the door for sales by Dow AgroSciences, DuPont Pioneer, Monsanto, and Syngenta. China agreed to conduct the evaluations as part of an agreement unveiled by the White House on May 12. The two countries reached the trade deal after a meeting in April between U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. U.S. officials have prodded China for years to speed up its lengthy process for deciding whether to approve the import of new genetically modified (GM) crops. It typically takes six years to win Chinese clearance of a GM variety, twice as long as other major nations take. Under the new deal, Chinas National Biosafety Committee will meet by the end of May to assess the safety of eight products made by four major U.S. agrochemical companies. Dow AgroSciences is seeking approval for its corn and soybean seeds, while Syngenta and DuPont Pioneer have each applied to sell a GM corn variety in China. Monsanto makes four of the products pending approval, including herbicide-tolerant corn, soybeans, and two alfalfa varieties that have been under review for nearly six years. The … Continue reading

Bucks commissioners OK state award of $2 million for Pa … – The Intelligencer

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

The Bucks County commissioners unanimously approved a $2 million state grant that will aid the expansion of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center in Buckingham. With their vote Wednesday, the commissioners accepted the agreement between the biotechnology center and the state, and agreed to act as the facilitator for the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP). "Every entity that applies for the RACP grant has to have a cooperation agreement with one of the governments to move forward," said Lynn Bush, executive director of the Bucks County Planning Commission. "We are basically the go-between for the company and the state agency." Plans have been in motion for years to add more laboratory and office space to the Biotechnology Center. The state grant and a $4.6 million federal grant will contribute to the overall costs of the project, estimated between $12 million and $13 million. The remainder willbe financed with a conventional loan awarded by Univest Bank. "We're thrilled to continue our partnership with the biotechnology center and allow them the opportunity to grow and expand in that area," said Bucks County Commissioner Robert Loughery. "The center has become a real success story for the county and the region." A groundbreaking ceremony for the … Continue reading
