NSF, IARPA, and SRC Push into Semiconductor Synthetic Biology Computing – HPCwire (blog)

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Research into how biological systems might be fashioned into computational technology has a long history with various DNA-based computing approaches explored. Now, the National Science Foundation has fired up a new program Semiconductor Synthetic Biology for Information Processing and Storage Technologies and just issued a solicitation in which eight to ten grants totaling around $4 million per year for three years are expected to be awarded. The program is a joint effort between NSF, the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), and Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and has grand ambitions and was the subject of a Computing Community Consortium blog posted yesterday by Mitra Basu, the program director: New information technologies can be envisioned that are based on biological principles and that use biomaterials in the fabrication of devices and components; it is anticipated that these information technologies could enable stored data to be retained for more than 100 years and storage capacity to be 1,000 times greater than current capabilities. These could also facilitate compact computers that will operate with substantially lower power than todays computers. Five goals are specified and each submission must include elements of at least three (proposals are due in October 2017): The solicitation notes … Continue reading

Xenomorph Biology (Mostly) Explained! – Nerdist

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

No movie monster is more menacing than the mysterious xenomorph (yes, small xIll get to that). Its ruthless, cunning, heavily armored, and filled with acid. Ever since we first saw H.R. Gigers now infamous design come to life in Alien, fans have wanted to know more about the deliberately vague creature. Unfortunately, in the nearly 40 intervening years, xenomorph biology has become even more complicated, confusing, and sometimes contradictory. Lets take off our helmets like good scientists and see if we can figure out how these monsters really work. In my latest Because Science, Im breaking down the xenomorph life cycle based on both what weve seen in the filmseven Prometheusand what we know can happen in nature. It turns out that the original xeno life cycle was based on something very real (and very terrible)waitdo you hear something? Like I was saying, the original xeno life cycle was much more plausible than you think. Then Prometheus happened. How the heck does the black goo figure into chestbursters and facehuggers and queens? Can we draw up something that will pull the cycle out of the shadows? Check out my latest episode above to find out! Thanks to Mack Weldon for … Continue reading

Students taking their GCSE biology exam were asked a very odd … – The indy100

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Picture: iStock Yesterday afternoon, thousands of GCSE students were left baffled when a stupid question about Charles Darwin on the AQA Biology exam. Students taking the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) version of the GCSE biology examwere asked why a Victorian journalist had satirised Charles Darwin as a monkey. Students reported wanting questions on the menstrual cycle or photosynthesis, instead they were asked to "Explain why Darwin is drawn as a monkey". Speaking to HuffingtonPost, an AQA spokesperson said: Its completely normal for students to tweet about their exams. We only ever ask questions about things that are covered in the syllabus - but we cant ask questions about everything on the syllabus, so students will always end up revising topics that dont come up. One student tweeted: It's nice to see AQA are ruining this years GCSEs and not just last years #AQABiology. It is not the first time the AQA biology exam has angered teenagers. Last year, students were left fuming over the GCSE biology exam that contained questions about drunk rats and teenage drinking. However, students one teacher explain to the Plymouth Herald why the question was necessary. He said that the question was near the start … Continue reading

'Grey's Anatomy' star bids farewell to show with emotional note – CNN

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

Dr. Stephanie Edwards has checked out of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. At the end of last week's episode, viewers were left wondering what the character's fate would be after she and a young girl were left trapped in the same room as a massive explosion. Stephanie, who is played by actress Jerrika Hinton, and the young girl survived. They suffered burns, smoke inhalation and various other wounds from which they were told they'd recover. (The deranged patient who Stephanie lit on fire, inadvertently causing the explosion, did not survive -- as one might imagine.) But Stephanie was not eager to get back into the operating room. The harrowing experience -- coupled with her history as a sick child -- made her realized she didn't want to spend any more time in hospitals. She told mentor Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) that she needed to get outside the sterile walls and live. Thus, Stephanie walked away with the rarest of "Grey's Anatomy" endings: something not completely horrific or tragic or heartbreaking. Hinton took to Instagram to mark the moment. "I am eternally thankful for five seasons of #GreysAnatomy and a graceful departure that underscores the courage it takes to choose yourself," … Continue reading

Anatomy of a failed political hit job on AG Adam Laxalt – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: Published on May 19th, 2017

If youre having trouble falling asleep, go listen to Wednesdays hearing on the secret recording made of Attorney General Adam Laxalt. Liberals built it up to be the event that would end Laxalts all-but-announced campaign for governor. Instead, it was hard to stay awake as lawyers discussed legal strategies and non-lawyers struggled to understand legal procedures. The only substantive takeaway was learning why lawyers get paid so much. Theyre the only ones crazy enough to want to work daily with such boring stuff. So how did liberals get it so wrong? Lets look at the anatomy of a failed political hit job. Start with motive. Liberals are on a mission to destroy Laxalt for being both a successful conservative elected official and Republicans likely 2018 gubernatorial nominee. Next came opportunity. The news that Gaming Control Board Chairman A.G. Burnett had surreptitiously recorded a conversation with Laxalt discussing a case involving Las Vegas Sands Corp. and its CEO, Laxalt donor Sheldon Adelson, would have been enticing enough. Finding out that Burnett sent the tape to the FBI, even though the FBI said no crime had been committed, had liberals writing Laxalts political obituary before even hearing the tape. They couldnt pass … Continue reading

The anatomy of a typical Piston first quarter – PistonPowered

Mar 22, 2017; Chicago, IL, USA; Detroit Pistons guard Reggie Jackson (1) reacts during the second half against the Chicago Bulls at the United Center. Mandatory Credit: Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports Marcus Morris season in review and grade by Duncan Smith Mr. Big Shot could be headed to the Atlanta Hawks by Luke Wolthuis The Detroit Pistons had a pattern for most of the season. They would start slow, take poor shots, be a step slow defensively, be down 6-10 points halfway through the first quarter. Sometimes the bench would rally and the Pistons would win, sometimes they trailed by too much or the bench never got it together. Either way, the starters almost never got off to a good start, and the first quarter was usually when they were at their worst. There were platitudes about energy, getting off to better starts. Expressions that certain players had to bring it, play harder with more consistency. But what if there was another way to describe the Pistons starts? A way to quantify what they were doing and why it was so consistently unsuccessful, and a way forward to avoid falling into the same pitfalls going into next season can only … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy actress: playing a lesbian has changed my life – PinkNews

Greys Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw, who is Arizona on the show, has opened up about how playing a lesbian has changed her life. Capshaw, who first appeared as a guest star in the shows fifth season in 2009, has been through the wringer as Arizona. Her character has married kick-ass orthopaedic surgeon Callie Torres, been divorced, lost her leg, and is now starting a relationship with Eliza Minnick, cast as this seasons antagonist. She said that acting as a lesbian in the enormously popular show for so long had been a huge positive in her life. I never would have imagined that I would be able to play a character that would feel like it does so much good, she told Yahoo Style. Capshaw said that she hoped her on-screen presence helped people who feel like the character resonates with them and it makes their day a little easier to see themselves represented. Or, she added, it could also provide a crucial tool in teaching family members or friends about homosexuality. If its someone watching it who has someone in their life who is gay, and they might have not understood it before all of a sudden they have another … Continue reading

Walterboro man has new lease on life after new Parkinson’s treatment | News | The Press and Standard – Walterboro Live

by The Press and Standard | May 18, 2017 5:00 pm Last Updated: May 17, 2017 at 12:49 pm Vic Still is wired literally. The 62-year-old Walterboro man recently had a brain pacemaker implanted to help control his symptoms of Parkinsons disease. The procedure involves implanting a stimulator in his chest, which is attached to an electrode in his brain. A handheld programmer controls the current to the electrode, which stimulates the thalamus, which produces dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, Still said. Still was diagnosed with Parkinsons eight years ago, shortly after moving back to Walterboro (where he grew up) from Charleston, where he was in sales with William Scotsman modular buildings in Summerville for 20 years. Parkinsons interferes with the ability to move, talk and has other neurologic symptoms. Its awful not to be able to move and thats what it is, a movement disorder, and its depressing severely depressing, the former runner said. Before committing to the procedure, Still asked his father, Ryan Still, for his opinion. He told him, Youve got to do it. You can hardly move. Dad was right. So far, Stills results have been very positive. Before the implant, he was taking 20-23 pills a … Continue reading
