Parkinson’s effects battled in boxing program at NYIT – Newsday

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017

Who hasnt dabbled in a bit of self-diagnosis and treatment to cure what ails us? Have a headache? Take some aspirin and lie down. Feeling queasy and lightheaded? Sip some ginger ale, nibble on crackers and lie down. Battling Parkinsons and losing muscle strength and mobility? Dont lie down. Take up boxing, minus the body blows. Thats what Rosilind Drukker did, after convincing her board-certified neurologist to take a certification program to bring the Rock Steady program to New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. I lost my handwriting when I was first diagnosed, said Drukker, 61, who lives in Dix Hills and learned she had the degenerative disease in 2010. About a year or two later, movement became very difficult. That is what Rock Steady has helped me with. Its helped me move a lot quicker and without the terrible aches. Rock Steady is a noncontact boxing program founded by former Indiana prosecutor Scott Newman after he was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2006. The organization became a national phenomenon over time, and patients and doctors alike took interest in the program. Exercise plays a fundamental role in the treatment of Parkinsons, a neurodegenerative disease that erodes parts of … Continue reading

Cannabis could treat traumatic brain injury, Israeli researchers say – The Times of Israel

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017

Our bodys cannabinoid receptor system may play a part in protecting our nervous system following trauma, Israeli researchers believe. A team at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem has found that rats and mice subjected to traumatic brain injury (TBI) showed significantly better recovery when treated with cannabinoid compounds, possibly opening the way for clinical trials in the near future. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds, either derived from cannabis or manufactured, that act on specific cannabinoid receptors in our bodys cells. The most well-known is tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, marijuanas main psychoactive compound. The endocannabinoid system, our bodys natural cannabinoid receptors, is found in the brain and most organs of the body, and is believed to be a part of the neuroprotective mechanism in mammals, said Prof. Esther Shohami of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. When an external event like stroke or trauma occurs, the body responds by producing these molecules that should protect the brain, Shohami said. In previous studies, the researchers looked at the endocannabinoid 2-AG in mice following a traumatic brain injury. 2-AG is produced by the body naturally, but in relatively low amounts that are not enough to effectively protect the brain. The researchers noticed that 2-AG levels were … Continue reading

Bioidentical Hormone Restorative Therapy – Why Haven’t You Heard Of It? – HuffPost UK

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017

Bioidentical Hormone Restorative Therapy - Why Haven't You Heard of It? To answer that - because taking hormones is considered a controversial topic. This would be due to the outcome of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study which was halted ahead of schedule, in 2002, after it was found that HRT (hormone replacement therapy), a combo drug of synthetic oestrogens and progestins commonly known as PremPro, increased the risk of both heart disease and breast cancer. However, not all hormone therapies that are prescribed and taken are created equally. HRT and BHRT (bioidentical hormone restorative therapy) are two very different therapies. Unfortunately, since the WHI study, both synthetic and bioidentical hormones have been bundled together as 'bad' and disease-causing. This, of course, is totally untrue. We have bundled the very ugly and very bad (HRT) together with the very, very good (BHRT) and classified them ALL as 'scary'! We are looking at two very different scenarios here: hormones that cause disease - synthetic - and hormones that protect from disease - bioidentical. It is important for everyone to understand the difference between these two forms of hormones and their therapies - synthetic and bioidentical - and to have the correct … Continue reading

Lab-Grown Blood Stem Cells Produced at Last – Scientific American

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017

After 20 years of trying, scientists have transformed mature cells into primordial blood cells that regenerate themselves and the components of blood. The work, described today inNature, offers hope to people with leukaemia and other blood disorders who need bone-marrow transplants but cant find a compatible donor. If the findings translate into the clinic, these patients could receive lab-grown versions of their own healthy cells. One team, led by stem-cell biologist George Daley of Boston Childrens Hospital in Massachusetts, created human cells that act like blood stem cells, although they are not identical to those found in nature. A second team, led by stem-cell biologist Shahin Rafii of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, turned mature cells from mice into fully fledged blood stem cells. For many years, people have figured outparts of this recipe, but theyve never quite gotten there, says Mick Bhatia, a stem-cell researcher at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, who was not involved with either study. This is the first time researchers have checked all the boxes and made blood stem cells. Daleys team chose skin cells and other cells taken from adults as their starting material. Using a standard method, they reprogrammed the … Continue reading

Novelogics Biotechnology, Inc. & CDRD Partner to Advance Novel Cancer Treatment – Business Wire (press release)

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2017

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Novelogics Biotechnology, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a research agreement with The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD), Canadas national drug development and commercialization centre, to further characterize Novelogics' internally-developed antibody immunotherapy for treating cancer. The proprietary technology behind Novelogics innovation involves discovery and development of monoclonal antibodies that target a protein that promotes immune suppression in cancer patients. It is predicted that this new therapy could treat a broad range of cancers, and because it works with the patients own immune system, it would be safer and less toxic with fewer debilitating side-effects. CDRD will be analyzing the technology through custom in vitro assays that will help validate and identify their lead antibody and move it towards a Phase 1 clinical trial as early as 2019. The technology has recently shown preliminary evidence of tumour inhibition in a prostate cancer model and based on results from CDRDs research, it could be expanded to other cancer models. Novelogics President and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Wayne Cheney stated, We are excited to introduce our novel approach to treating cancer. Unlike other immunotherapies that function by modulating, inhibiting or blocking targets, our innovative drug works … Continue reading

Cerebral palsymeans a lot of things to a lot of different people, explains John Ross Bowie about what hes been learning from his work on the show Speechless. For the ABC comedy, Bowies character Jimmy DiMeo is married to Maya (Minnie Driver), and they have son J.J. (Micah Fowler), a victim of cerebral palsy. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he adds, Its a huge vast community. Whenever I go anywhere now, I look at the accessibilityissues of the place.I think, How would we get Micah in here? Thats something that would never have crossed my mind 14 months ago. He says that Jimmy is so cool and unflappable. Its fun to pretend for 23 weeks that Im this guy that lets things slide and doesnt sweat the small stuff. Thatcoolness Jimmy has is not me, and its really fun to explore and try to find the part of myself that can do that. Hes not concerned with other peoples opinions and not concerned with pet worries. Bowie has a background in improv with the UCB. Bringing those skills to Speechless he says that we dont have a ton of time to do improv and the scripts … Continue reading
