May 15, 2017 7:53 AM By Pat Gallen NEWTOWN, Pa. (CBS) At Newtown Athletic Club in Bucks County, inclusiveness is important, and its why theyve put the UFIT program in place. When Clare Myers heard about UFIT, she enrolled her 13-year-old-son, Robbie, who has cerebral palsy. Its just a godsend to have some place for him to do something that is productive, that makes him feel good about himself, Myers said. It helps him with his own self-esteem, which Ive seen in the last two weeks. Another UFIT member is Pamela Gifford, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 26 years ago. I have lesions in my neck and in my lower thoracic spine, says Gifford. So it causes restriction and pain. In recent years, she gained weight … Continue reading

Effect of intravesical botulinum toxin injection on symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia in a patient with chronic … – UroToday

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2017

There are few treatment options for managing autonomic dysreflexia in patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). According to some studies, intravesical botulinum toxin for SCI patients with autonomic dysreflexia has a preventive effect on symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia. However, the usefulness of an intravesical botulinum toxin injection has never been reported for autonomic dysreflexia in an adult patient with chronic cervical SCI, although there has been for one pediatric patient. A 62-year-old man with chronic cervical SCI had neurogenic bladder due to C6-7 SCI since sustaining a fall in 1980. He presented with an intermittent headache and severe hypertension because of persistent autonomic dysreflexia. His symptoms did not improve with conservative management, and he could not undergo an operation to resect the lung cancer because of his uncontrolled blood pressure. To control his fluctuating blood pressure, he was taken to an operating room to receive an intravesical botulinum toxin injection for refractory bladder spasms. Subsequently, his blood pressure was controlled, and then the lung mass could be surgically removed. His improved condition lasted for more than 6 months. This case suggests that botulinum toxin is a logical treatment option for autonomic dysreflexia as well as neurogenic detrusor overactivity in … Continue reading

For the National Football League, concussions are a real problem. The league knows it. The league is just not happy talking about it. A 2016 congressional report concluded the NFL tried to improperly influence the National Institutes of Health when the NIH was conducting a study about the connection between Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), commonly known as a concussion, and the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). CTE is the disease that doctors believe contributed to the death of several former professional football players, among them San Diego native Junior Seau. Former players have tried relentlessly to try and figure out how to combat the symptoms of CTE and now thanks to a treatment being done in San Diego they might have a ray of hope. First, a bit of background. Doctors believe 30 percent to 40 percent of people who sustain a concussion will experience some level of post-concussion syndrome. Post-concussion syndrome can cause neurological problems such as migraines, headaches and dizzy spells. It also comes with cognitive problems like memory changes, difficulty in planning or focusing and behavioral problems such as depression, mood disorders and sleep issues.
