We wish we could tell you Stephanie was motivated by a mentor to work for her diploma. But actually, it was the opposite. Somebody at vocational rehabilitation told me I couldnt and I wanted to show them that I could, Miner said. Each day, her parents have driven her to campus along with her service dog, Astro, who wears many hats. He helps me push the buttons on the doors here at the college and he helps me pick things up," shesaid. Astro has only been here for the final stretch of her higher educational journey. She's taken only a class or two at a time. The tortoise and the hare mentality," Miner said. Which makes this Graduation Day 24 years in the … Continue reading

Health Beat: Multiple sclerosis drug... COLUMBUS, Ohio - For 25 years, Pamela Arterbridge has been building her salon business, one customer at a time. "I have a dedicated clientele and I never wanted to let them down," Arterbridge said. But four years ago, she began feeling exhausted and then some symptoms she couldn't ignore. "I woke up one morning and all of my toes were numb and tingling, and it felt like I had rocks in my shoes," described Arterbridge. She had multiple sclerosis. "I have a lesion on my spine, and I have three on my brain," Arterbridge detailed. Dr. Michael Racke, a neurologist at The Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, is an expert in MS and one of a nationwide team of researchers studying the effects of ocrelizumab. "Almost half the patients had no evidence of disease activity in terms of their MS," Racke said. "That's much higher than we've seen with any other MS treatment." Ocrelizumab is also the first drug ever available for the primary, progressive form of the disease, which includes about 15 percent of MS patients. The drug is given to all MS patients as an infusion. Research summary - … Continue reading

Hormone therapy may increase risk of hearing loss in menopausal … – Zee News

Posted: Published on May 15th, 2017

London: Using hormone replacement therapy drugs are likely to increase the risk of older women becoming deaf, warns a study. Hormone replacement therapy is treatment with oestrogens, the female sex hormone, with the aim of alleviating menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness, and sometimes conditions like osteoporosis -- a condition in which bones become weak and brittle. Previous studies had suggested that menopause may increase the risk for hearing loss, due to a reduction in oestrogen levels. "Many factors contribute to acquired hearing loss, including age, genetics, noise, medical conditions, diet and lifestyle factors. Our research focuses on identifying preventable contributors to hearing loss," lead author Sharon Curhan at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Massachusetts, was quoted as saying by express.co.uk. "Although the role of sex hormones in hearing is complex and not completely understood, these findings suggest that women who undergo natural menopause at an older age may have a higher risk," she added. For the study, detailed in the journal Menopause, the team examined independent links between menopausal status, oral hormone therapy, and risk of self-reported hearing loss in 80,972 women. The results showed that 23 per cent of the participants suffered hearing loss. No … Continue reading

Most people really rue the plant section and they hate it, but for me, it was my favorite part and I loved it, Thomas said. I thought botanical science just makes so much sense to me. It really clicked for my brain and I understood it very well. I had to leave all of my friends that I had been taking classes with for two years, Thomas said. I had a different course load, different teachers. My family was really supportive, so that was a big plus. Some people were like, Youre making a mistake. You need to go into medicine. Cell-free synbio: a technology whose time has come – PLoS Blogs (blog)

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

By former Community Editor Steven Burgess Its like instant noodles just add water exclaims Dr. Keith Pardee, now an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. He is describing a small black object developed during his postdoc in the Collins lab. This unassuming device is one of the most advanced biosensors ever built it is able to detect the presence of the Zika virus. This is achieved by using an RNA toehold switch which provides the molecular precision required to identify and outbreaks and help guide efforts to combat virus spread. But things get really interesting when you look at the transformative technology behind the sensor. Rather than use the common approaches of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or a genetically modified bacteria to detect the virus, Keith decided to use a cell free system. The principle is simple: grow up bacteria, smash open the cells, and use the contents to perform reactions in a test tube or on paper (for a guide on how to make extracts see this JoVE article). This has a number of advantages over the alternatives: unlike PCR, the assay can be used in remote locations without the need for expensive lab equipment, thereby allowing instantaneous … Continue reading
