The Anatomy of a Bro-Witch – Patheos (blog)

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

The other day someone called me a Bro-Witch online and mentioned that there were at least twenty other Bro-Witches out there in the universe. Now I have no idea what exactly at Bro-Witch is and who my Bro-Witching Brothers are, but apparently they are out there. Of course Bro-Witch was meant as an insult, and I took it that way, but after a little thought I decided that the title was absolutely hilarious. According to the Urban Dictionary a bro is defined as: An alpha male idiot. This is the derogatory sense of the word (common usage in the western US): white, 16-25 years old, inarticulate, belligerent, talks about nothing but chicks and beer, drives a jacked up truck thats plastered with stickers, has rich dad that owns a dealership or construction business and constantly tells this to chicks at parties, is into extreme sports that might be fun to do but are uncool to claim (wakeboarding, dirt biking, lacrosse), identifies excessively with brand names, spends a female amount of money on clothes and obsesses over his appearance to a degree that is not socially acceptable for a heterosexual male. Sadly (though I guess I should probably be relieved) I … Continue reading

'Anatomy of Innocence' describes incalculable injustices – Press Herald

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

An unstated yet central premise of Anatomy of Innocence: Testimonies of the Wrongfully Convicted, is that anyone anyone can be sent to prison for murder. In the United States, this injustice falls preponderantly on people who are black. But as the stories in this book underscore, no one is immune. The snare of wrongful conviction can steal years and decades from the lives of daycare moms, law students, small business managers, and people innocently sitting in their car watching the ocean. Anatomy of Innocence pairs the Kafkaesque experiences of 15 exonerated individuals with pedigreed writers who tell their stories. The list of contributors include Maines own international best-selling espionage author Gayle Lynds, writing here with her husband, John Sheldon, a former defense attorney, prosecutor, and judge; Lee Child, author of the popular Jack Reacher thriller series; and the late Pulitzer- and Tony-Award winner, playwright Arthur Miller, who years ago wrote an essay published here for the first time about a wrongfully convicted teenager. The books introduction is by best-selling legal thriller novelist Scott Turow. The series of profiles follows a loose progression of events that typify the hellish journey through the penal system. Each profile focuses on one or two … Continue reading

TAKE AN ACTIVE APPROACH TO PARKINSON’S For Your Health – The Waynedale News

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

Parkinsons disease (PD) is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. In Parkinsons disease, certain nerve cells (neurons) in the brain gradually break down or die. Over one million people in the U.S. are living with PD with males being affected 1.5 times more than females. There is a higher prevalence in Caucasians and the incidence increases with age, with most new cases being diagnosed over the age of 60. Even further, it occurs in 1 in 20 persons over the age of 80. Certain risk factors include family history and prolonged exposure to toxins such as herbicides or pesticides. Many of the symptoms are due to a loss of neurons that produce a chemical messenger in your brain called dopamine. When dopamine levels decrease, it causes abnormal brain activity, leading to signs of Parkinsons disease. PD has no cure, but the symptoms can be managed. The four cardinal signs of PD are resting tremor, bradykinesia (slow movement), rigidity and postural instability. Common presentation of Parkinsons include, flexed forward posture, mask-like face, quiet, fast, monotonous speech, small handwriting, shuffling gait. In addition to the outward physical signs of Parkinsons there can also be associated sensory effects such … Continue reading

Non-Amyloid Treatments: Inflammation, Epigenetics, Regeneration – Alzforum

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

11 May 2017 Alzheimers researchers are pursuing treatments beyond amyloid and tau, and at the 13th International Conference on Alzheimers and Parkinsons Diseases, held March 29 to April 2 in Vienna, they shared news on drugs in Phase 1 and 2 trials that target inflammation, epigenetics, and regeneration. The candidates include two small molecules that soothe microglia and suppress inflammatory signaling, an attempt to tweak epigenetic regulation by way of lysine-specific demethylase, and the neurosteroidallopregnanolone. Two Strategies to Calm Inflammation Growing genetic and animal evidence pegs the immune system as a central influencer in both hastening and ameliorating Alzheimers progression. Because of this, many groups are looking at ways to tamp down harmful inflammatory signaling. Researchers led by D. Martin Watterson of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, designed and synthesized compounds that specifically suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines, and turned up two related small molecules, MW151 and MW189. Both act on microglia to selectively turn down pro-inflammatory cytokines without affecting anti-inflammatory signaling, said Linda Van Eldik of the University of Kentucky, Lexington, who collaborates with Watterson to develop these candidates asdrugs. The small molecule MW151 turns down harmful inflammatory signaling and is being developed in pill form for Alzheimers disease. … Continue reading

University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus gets $38M gift for … – Denver Business Journal

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

Kelly said Marcus chose to donate the money to CU Anschutz due to a relationship Kelly had established with the Marcus Foundation when Kelly was at Walter Reed. "Their team from the Marcus Foundation came to visit the [Walter Reed clinic] ... and started thinking, 'This model fits for veteran care'," Kelly said in an interview. Kelly said while the Walter Reed medical center focused on active duty veterans, Marcus's interest had been more in treating veterans. "They'd already been helping in other clinics, and were willing to make a commitment if things were done right," Kelly said. "They found out I'd returned to CU Anschutz, so they contacted me in followup and said, 'let's get together to see if this works.'" Kelly said since CU Anschutz already had the technology and operations on-campus, so it was a natural fit. Meanwhile, CU Anschutz also said today that it will partner with The Cohen Veterans Network to build a team of staff members dedicated solely to treating mental health issues among veterans and their families. The Cohen Veterans Network will provide CU Anschutz with $9.8 million to build that team, and the veterans and their families will be able to obtain … Continue reading

Researcher Initiates Trial to Investigate if Statins Could Become MS Treatment – Drug Discovery & Development

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

A UCL researcher is leading a phase 3 trial involving more than 1,000 people with multiple sclerosis (MS) to investigate whether simvastatin could become a treatment for the condition. The project will cost almost 6 million and is being funded by collaboration between the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the MS Society (UK), the National MS Society (US), the NHS and UK universities. The trial will test simvastatin, a cheap cholesterol lowering drug, in people with the secondary progressive form of MS. There are currently no licensed treatments that can slow or stop disability progression in people with this type of MS. The research will be led by Dr Jeremy Chataway (UCL Institute of Neurology), who led the phase 2 trial into simvastatin that was published inThe Lancetin 2014. It involved 140 people with secondary progressive MS. The research found those taking high doses of the drug had a significant reduction in the rate of brain atrophy (brain shrinkage) over two years and also had better disability scores at the end of study. Dr Chataway said: "This drug holds incredible promise for the thousands of people living with secondary progressive MS in the UK, and around the world, who … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Therapy Tied to Hearing Loss | Health … – Arizona Daily Star

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

FRIDAY, May 12, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Hearing loss has been linked to several factors associated with menopause, a new study says. One factor is your age at menopause. An older age is tied to a higher risk of hearing troubles. And, a second factor is the use of oral hormone therapy to ease some of the symptoms of menopause. The researchers also found that the longer a woman used hormone therapy, the greater the odds of hearing issues. Hearing loss was already known to be more common in women after menopause, a time when natural hormone levels drop. Because of this, doctors had suspected that the use of oral hormone therapy might offer some protection against menopause-linked hearing loss, the researchers said. "The finding from this observational study that women who underwent menopause at a later age and used oral hormone therapy had greater hearing loss was unexpected but should lead to more testing in a randomized, clinical trial," JoAnn Pinkerton, executive director of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), said in news release from the group. The current study can only show an association between hearing loss and hormone therapy or older age at menopause. It wasn't designed … Continue reading

Postmenopausal Hormone Therapy Tied to Hearing Loss – Newsmax

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2017

Several studies have suggested that menopause may increase the risk of hearing loss, possibly due to lower estrogen levels, and that postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy might slow the decline. But researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital found that hormone therapy actually increased the risk of hearing loss. Researchers examined links between menopausal status, oral hormone therapy, and risk of self-reported hearing loss in more than 80,000 women in the Nurses' Health Study II. During the 22-year study period, 23 percent of the participants developed hearing loss. Although no significant association was found between menopausal status and the risk, using postmenopausal hormone therapy was linked to a higher risk of hearing loss. The longer women used hormone therapy, the greater their risk. "Our research focuses on identifying preventable contributors to hearing loss," said lead author Dr. Sharon Curhan. "Although the role of sex hormones in hearing is complex and incompletely understood, these findings suggest that women who undergo natural menopause at an older age may have a higher risk. In addition, longer duration of postmenopausal hormone therapy use is associated with higher risk. "These findings suggest that hearing health may be a consideration for women when evaluating the risks and benefits … Continue reading
