Hundreds of new stem cell lines ready to help research – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

Induced pluripotent stem cells have revolutionized stem cell science in the decade since their invention. Theyre yielding clues into the nature of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimers, and are also being tapped for therapy. But creating these IPS cells is lengthy, complicated and tricky, and the facilities equipped to make them cant accommodate all the scientists whod like to get their hands on them. A UK-led consortium has removed that bottleneck, by producing 711 lines of ready-to-go IPS cells from healthy individuals. These lines are meant to help scientists understand the normal variations between healthy individuals and those involved in disease, as well as to understand normal human biology and development. The IPS lines are available for research purposes to academic scientists and industry by contacting the Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Initiative (HipSci), at http://www.hipsci.org and the European Bank for induced Pluripotent Stem Cells at https://www.ebisc.org. The accomplishment was announced in a study published in Nature. It can be found online at j.mp/711ips. While many other efforts have generated IPS cells to address rare diseases, this study produces them from healthy volunteers to plumb common genetic variation, Fiona Watt, a lead author on the paper and co-principal investigator … Continue reading

Blood study insight could improve stem cell therapy success – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

May 12, 2017 Researchers have pinpointed a key enzyme that is vital for the production of fresh blood cells in the body. The enzyme is essential for the survival of specialised stem cells that give rise to new blood cells, the study found. Experts say the findings could help to improve the success of stem cell therapies that are being developed to treat some blood cancers and disorders of the immune system. Enzyme Scientists focused on an enzyme called fumarase, which is known to play a key role in the generation of energy inside cells. Children with gene mutations that affect fumarase have blood defects, which prompted researchers to investigate its function. The mouse study found that deletion of fumarase from blood cells causes major defects in new blood cell production. These defects could be traced back to defects in the specialised stem cells that give rise to new blood cells. Blocking the enzyme causes a molecule called fumarate to build up inside the cells, which has wide-ranging toxic effects. Stem cells The study sheds new light on the conditions that blood stem cells need to survive, which could help to boost the success of stem cell therapies, the researchers … Continue reading

UAH biology professor discovers new population of rare freshwater fish – UAH News (press release)

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

Alabama has one of the richest river systems in North America and is ranked among the nation's top five states for biodiversity. Land Trust of North Alabama According to The Nature Conservancy, the Tennessee Valley River Basin is the single most biologically diverse river system for aquatic organisms in the U.S. So its no surprise that Dr. Bruce Stallsmith, an associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH), spends a lot of time there. My research is on the ecology and conservation of the regions freshwater fishes, with a particular emphasis on cyprinid minnows, killifishes of the genus Fundulus, and percid darters, says Dr. Stallsmith, whose Stallsmith Lab is renowned for its aquatic ecology research. And while the primary focus has been on their reproductive biology, I am also interested in the monogenoidean gill parasites that can impact their ability to reproduce. His most recent foray to the basin was at the behest of Hallie Porter, development director of the Land Trust of North Alabama. She asked if I would be interested in assessing Bethel Spring for rare species of freshwater fish, and of course I jumped at the chance, says Dr. … Continue reading
