Cottage Cardiology Center Achieves Heart Procedure Milestone – Noozhawk

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

Posted on May 11, 2017 | 11:40 a.m. The Cottage Heart and Vascular Center at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital recently reached a milestone for advanced cardiology care by successfully using the TAVR procedure to treat 100 patients more than any other health system on the Central Coast. TAVR is the first non-surgical procedure for the replacement of the aortic valve. In less than two years, we have helped 100 patients who otherwise would not have been able to receive treatment because of the high risks associated with open heart surgery, said Dr. Joseph Aragon, interventional cardiologist on the TAVR team. The number of people we have helped has exceeded the expectations we had when we completed our first TAVR in September 2015, said Dr. Aragon, who also is medical director of the Structural Heart Program. In the United States, 1.5 million people suffer from aortic stenosis, a serious medical condition where the aortic valve begins to narrow, reducing blood flow from the aorta to the rest of the body. This can cause shortness of breath, dizziness and heart failure. The standard treatment is an aortic valve replacement. However, many patients, especially the elderly, are not able to have open-heart surgery … Continue reading

Flash Physics: Quantum control of molecular ions, biophysicist to … – physicsworld.com

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

Flash Physics is our daily pick of the latest need-to-know developments from the global physics community selected by Physics World's team of editors and reporters The quantum properties of molecular ions have been controlled by physicists in the US and Germany. Led by Chin-wen Chou of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the US, the researchers determined a molecular-ion's quantum state by transferring the information to an atomic ion. A calcium ion and calcium-hydride ion are first confined in an electromagnetic trap. The atomic ion is then laser cooled, which also slows the motion of the partner molecular ion. Although the molecular ion is now in its lowest-energy electronic and vibrational states, it still rotates randomly. A pulse of laser light is applied to the molecule at a frequency that targets only one, unique transition in its rotational spectrum. If the molecule does jump into the target state, the system remains motionless. But if it makes the transition, both ions start moving again because energy is returned to their shared motion. This movement can be detected by applying a laser pulse to the atomic ion that changes its internal state, causing it to scatter light that can … Continue reading

Anatomy of Fake News – Washington Times

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

ANALYSIS/OPINION: Every time the Washington political press freaks out and goes into full panic mode against President Trump, the blockbuster, Watergate-volume story always unfolds the same way. First the news starts leaking or breaking. Newsrooms from the Potomac to the Hudson become seized and fixated on every morsel of the delicious story. News flashes zing around the internet. Then it hits cable television and the press starts slinging the most salacious and scandalous accusations they can whip up, charging the president with the highest crimes imaginable. Each time, these reporters sink deeper and deeper into a fantasyland as they dream bigger and bigger. THIS TIME, they keep thinking, we FINALLY got him! Reporters and Democrats alike not to repeat myself are actually now speculating about whether Mr. Trump will survive the certain impeachment hearings to come. But then, as the heavy breathing subsides and the adrenaline rush gives way to factual, concrete reporting, the most damning charges fall away. Turns out Mr. Trump is a germaphobe and wasnt in that Russian hotel room. The bust of Martin Luther King is still in the Oval Office. He didnt abandon conservatives by naming his sister to the Supreme Court. Mr. Trumps Tower … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy Might Have Just Killed Off [Spoiler] – E! Online

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

Grey's Anatomy confirmed many of our suspicions tonight, but it still managed to shock us pretty seriously. First, let's talk about that ending. Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) was held hostage by a psychotic rapist patient after thinking he just wanted to be reunited with the love of his life, instead of the woman he had been trying to rape when she caused the car they were in to go off of a cliff. He planned to set a small fire to get the emergency doors open, but instead, Edwardsset him on fire, which also lit up anoxygen tank and caused a huge explosion. Maybe, possibly, Stephanie could survive, but it's not looking likely. That was a pretty big explosion, andHinton isreportedly leaving the show. Still, we're not ready to watch another one of these doctors die! ABC Elsewhere, Owen (Kevin McKidd) found out that his sister Megan is somehow still alive, and Alex (Justin Chambers) encountered Jo's husband (played by guest star Matthew Morrison) at a conference and imagined beating him up. Instead, he just told him to stay away from his ex-wife, but we can't imagine he's gone for good at this point. In slightly better news, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) … Continue reading

Anatomy of a deluge – The Globe and Mail

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

The river From its terminus at Montreal, with tributaries that reach deep into the heart of central Canada, the Ottawa River drains more than 146,000 square kilometres a larger footprint than many European countries, including Ireland, Hungary andGreece. Yet the river is also one of Canadas most regulated waterways, with 13 major reservoirs and more than 50 major dams and hydroelectric generating stations along thesystem. So how can a river with so many controls still manage to flood its banks, causing loss of life and what will almost certainly turn out to be many millions of dollars in property damage? The answer is that most of the controls and all of the reservoirs are on the upper third of the riverbasin. Ile Mercier covered in floodwater is seen on the Riviere des Prairies on the north part of Montreal, on May 8,2017. PAUL CHIASSON/THE CANADIANPRESS The southern two thirds of the basin essentially has no substantial storage on it, says Michael Sarich, a senior water-resources engineer with the Ottawa River Regulation Secretariat, which oversees procedures related to water levels on theriver. This means once water gets beyond the reservoirs and is running freely through the most populated regions of the … Continue reading

‘Profound questions’ to consider in case of brain injured man – Irish Times

Posted: Published on May 11th, 2017

The High Court is hearing a case of a severely brain injured young man who the HSE is seeking to not resuscitate if his condition deteriorates. Photograph: Bryan OBrien/The Irish Times. The president of the High Court visited a severely brain injured young man in hospital before deciding on a HSE application to allow doctors not to resuscitate him if his condition deteriorates. Mr Justice Peter Kelly said he would deliver judgment as soon as he can. He said it was not a matter to be rushed because he has very profound questions to address and a great deal to read and think about. Addressing the mans parents, who oppose the HSEs application and maintain their son has a significant level of awareness, the judge said they certainly fit into the category of devoted and responsible parents. He thanked them for attending court, co-operating with his visit to their son and for their care for the man over the years. The parents are separately suing the HSE on the mans behalf arising from his care and treatment after he was admitted to hospital with an acute lung condition. The court has heard there is no unifying diagnosis for the mans … Continue reading
