McNeil changing treatment to avoid ‘warehousing’ some sexual predators – Longview Daily News

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2017

OLYMPIA More than two dozen residents with severe mental disabilities at Washingtons Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island will stop being warehoused and start getting treatment that could help them. A settlement in a case against the center and the Department of Social and Health Services is expected to clear the way to develop new treatment programs for 27 current and any future residents who are sexual predators with mental disabilities that keep them participating in standard programs designed to treat the behavior that resulted in their commitment. The problems range from low IQ and learning disabilities to brain injuries, according to the lawsuit filed by Disability Rights Washington in February. The center has a five-step system that sexual predators may complete to qualify for less restrictive confinement or release, but the mental disabilities of the 27 residents in question keep them from taking part. The center has no alternative system. As a result, the residents are essentially stuck in place. It runs the gamut, said Rachael Seevers, staff attorney for Disability Rights Washington. A lot of them had been there for a very long time, essentially warehoused. Those residents are routinely punished for behavior such as failing to follow … Continue reading

FDA approves new drug to treat people with multiple sclerosis – WNDU-TV

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2017

The FDA has approved a new drug to treat people living with multiple sclerosis. The chronic auto-immune disorder causes a patients own system to attack his or her brain and spinal cord. The drug is not a cure for MS, but the treatment will allow some patients to live virtually symptom-free for the first time in years. For 25 years, Pamela Arterbridge has been building her salon business one customer at a time. Pamela said, I have a dedicated clientele and I never wanted to let them down. Four years ago, she began feeling exhausted and developed symptoms she couldnt ignore. I woke up one morning and all of my toes were numb and tingling and it felt like I had rocks in my shoes, said Pamela. She had multiple sclerosis. I have a lesion on my spine, and I have three on my brain, added Pamela. Neurologist Michael Racke is an expert on MS at Ohio States Wexner Medical Center. He is one of a nationwide team of researchers studying the effects of a drug called Ocrelizumab. Almost half the patients had no evidence of disease activity in terms of their MS," said Dr. Racke. Statins could soon treat multiple sclerosis as ‘momentous’ trial begins – Telegraph.co.uk

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2017

Statinscould soon be prescribed to treat multiple sclerosis after a groundbreaking trial began to see if the cheap cholesterol busting drug could delay symptoms. The 6 million projectis being led by University College London and involves 1,180 people at 30 centres across Britain. It follows a successful small trial in 2014 which showed a significant reduction in the rate of brain shrinkage and an increase in mobility after two years for people on high doses of simvastatin , which usually prescribed to lower cholesterol. Charities said the trial was a 'momentous step' forward which offered hope to thousands of people with relapsing MS. The trial is scheduled to last six years, but because statins are already known to be safe and widely used, the treatment would quickly pass through regulators if it was deemed to be successful. Lead researcher Dr Jeremy Chataway from University College London's Institute of Neurology, who led an earlier study into the drug, said: "This drug holds incredible promise for the thousands of people living with secondary progressive MS in the UK, and around the world, who currently have few options for treatments that have an effect on disability. "This study will establish definitively whether simvastatin … Continue reading

The research will be led by Dr Jeremy Chataway, UCL Institute of Neurology, London, who led the phase 2 trial of simvastatin involving 140 people with SPMS that was published in The Lancet in 2014. The research found those taking high doses of simvastatin had a significant reduction in the rate of brain atrophy (brain shrinkage) over two years, and also had better disability and quality of life scores at the end of the study. "This drug holds incredible promise for the thousands of people living with secondary progressive MS in the U.K., and around the world, who currently have few options for treatments that have an effect on disability," said Chataway. "This study will establish definitively whether simvastatin is able to slow the rate of disability progression over a three year period, and we are very hopeful it will." Bruce Bebo, Executive Vice President, Research for the National MS Society said, "We are very pleased to be a partner in the public-private funding syndicate that was forged to support a phase 3 clinical trial of a repurposed, generic therapy for people with SPMS, for whom there are few treatment choices." Late last week, news broke that a womens CSGO tournament hosted by ESL rejected a team of trans players because they couldnt provide official documentation stating they were female. As first reported by BuzzFeed, however, Rigilios dreams of competitive glory were cut short by a very rude awakening. Upon submitting her request to ESL, she received the following response: No males are allowed. Please take care fake your gender can be penalized. Surprised and more than a little upset that her and her team had apparently been rejected based on their appearances, Rigilio reached out to Munich Finest Gaming, who said theyd need to see passports that designated Rigilio and her teammates as female.
