Michigan cardiology partnership celebrates 20 years – Cardiovascular Business

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

A Blue Cross Blue Shield cardiology collaborative in Michigan, designed to improve care and outcomes for heart patients, is celebrating two decades of existence. Called the Blue Cross Blue Shield Cardiovascular Consortium (BMC2), the group was created in 1997. It began as a collaboration between five hospitals in Michigan, but now includes all non-federal hospitals in the state, according to a press release from Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Medicine, one of the health systems involved in the group. We are able to compare outcomes and processes across hospitals to openly explore what is working well and where institutions can learn from each other, said Hitinder Gurm, MD, a University of Michigan Medicine interventional cardiologist who leads BMC2 and runs the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) registry, in a statement. Our goal is to create a culture of safety, reduce complications, improve appropriateness and share best practices so that all patients across the state will benefit. Over the years, the collaboration has proven it improves outcomes at the facilities involved. There was a 41 percent decrease in post-procedure blood transfusions and a 10 percent decrease in kidney complications. Additionally, data from BMC2 has resulted in 65 studies and many presentations at … Continue reading

Popular TED Talks explore future of agricultural innovation, biotechnology – Genetic Literacy Project

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

The well-known TED Talks is a clearinghouse of big thinkers and big ideas, and quite a few of them have focused on agriculture and food production over the years. Engineering Drought Resistance Jill Farrant, a Professor of molecular and cell biology at University of Cape Town, South Africa, is studying how ancient DNA can be turned on to help important food crops fight off drought. She and colleagues have been studying resurrection plants to achieve this goal. Resurrection plants are those that can undergo extreme drought without water for months or even years. Then when the next rain comes along within 12 to 48 hours the plants green up and start growing again. Farrants How We Can Make Plants Survive Without Water TED Talk featured her research into how resurrection plants work and if those special characteristics could be transferred into other plants, especially food crops. Robot Swarms Vijay Kumar, Dean of the University of Pennsylvanias School of Engineering and Applied Science, wowed his TED Talk audience with his presentation titled The Future of Flying Robots. His lab is developing autonomous flying robots that use onboard sensors, cameras, and laser scanners to map the environment it is in and avoid … Continue reading

India: Patentability of biotechnology products – Managing Intellectual Property (subscription)

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

In a landmark ruling on March 28 2017, the Delhi High Court, in Monsanto Technology LLC & Ors v Nuziveedu Seeds Limited & Ors, gave a prima facie opinion on the patentability and enforceability of man-made DNA sequences. Although only an order at the interim stage, this is the first time an Indian court has ruled on this issue and the order itself is a lengthy one. The Delhi High Court's interim order also deals with other issues of contract law and termination and despite finding in favour of Monsanto, inter alia, on patent issues, the Court ruled against Monsanto on certain contract-related issues. The infringement suit initiated by Monsanto, covering patents, trade marks and common law rights, was against a former sub-licensee of Monsanto's Bollgard II technology. Although Indian law prevents the patenting of plants, parts thereof and essentially biological processes for the production or propagation of plants, the Court held that the legislative intent was only to prevent patents being granted on what was naturally occurring. Thus, the Delhi High Court ruled that products of biotechnological processes such as man-made DNA sequences meant for use in plants are still patentable subject matter in India. The Delhi High Court's … Continue reading

Walter Bradley on Just Memorizing Stuff in Biology Education – Discovery Institute

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

As weve already noted, Texas recently concluded its science standards streamlining process and adopted language that supports critical thinking about evolution. At the November Board meeting, Center for Science & Culture Fellow Walter Bradley testified on the importance of inquiry-based science education. Dr. Bradleys testimony is especially powerful because he discusses his own background and how just memorizing stuff the opposite of critical inquiry initially turned him off from biology. I thought I would share this with you. He starts speaking at -3:07:05. You can click on the image at the top to go there and see and hear all of his comments. Excerpt: In reviewing the proposed streamlining, one of the concerns that I had in looking at the things that were being dropped out were things that primarily had to do with critical thinking, scientific reasoning and problem solving. I found that problematic for a very personal reason. When I was in tenth grade I took biology. Biology in those days was taught as sort of a, memorize a zillion details. I memorized all the details and I made a 99 percentile on my biology achievement test and I got invited to go to three different colleges for … Continue reading

Synthetic Biology Provides New Approach to Antibiotic Production – Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

Researchers from Imperial College London report that they have re-engineered baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae)to manufacture penicillin, which, in lab experiments, had antibacterial properties against Streptococcusbacteria. The authors of the study ("Biosynthesis of the Antibiotic Nonribosomal Peptide Penicillin in Baker'sYeast"),which is published inNature Communications, say their new method demonstrates the effectiveness of using this kind of synthetic biology as a route for discovering new antibiotics. This could open up possibilities for using re-engineered yeast cells to develop new forms of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs from nonribosomal peptides such as penicillin, they add. Nonribosomal peptides are normally produced by bacteria and fungi, forming the basis of most antibiotics today. Pharmaceutical companies have long experimented with nonribosomal peptides to make conventional antibiotics. The rise of antimicrobial resistance means there is a need to use genetic engineering techniques to find a new range of antibiotics from bacteria and fungi. However, genetically engineering the more exotic fungi and bacteriathe ones likely to have antibacterial propertiesis challenging because scientists don't have the right tools and they are difficult to grow in a lab environment, requiring special conditions. Baker's yeast cells on the other hand are easy to genetically engineer. Scientists can simply insert DNA from bacteria … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy recap: 'Leave It Inside' – EW.com (blog)

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

The tumor diagram is down, guys. I repeat: The tumor diagram is DOWN. Meredith has actually removed the giant tumor from the wall of her bedroom and left it outside Amelias room. Its a new era inGreys Anatomy, but to be fair, when youre courting a new man, I think weve all had that moment when weve said, Its hard to look at my dead ex-husbands tumor art while Im trying to cultivate intimacy. You know what Im saying? Of course you do. This week is all about the tumors: the awkward obstacles that we exist with and are hurt by. Its the way we live with the tumors. How Maggie awkwardly handles Meredith and Riggs. How Meredith fights the pain of losing Derek. How Bailey handles church and state when Minnickcalls out that Warren isnt a risk taker. And then, you know, actual tumors. Lets just hop in. Thick Skin and A Tumor Heart DeLuca and April end up together with a poor girl whose sexcapade turns into a free fall down two flights of stairs when she mistakes the front door for the bathroom. But the thing is, shes just stopping in for a broken arm, even though … Continue reading

Woodrey: Anatomy Of A Closer | D1Baseball.com – D1 Baseball College Baseball News & Scores

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

Columns Thomas Woodrey - May 4, 2017 For as bad of a wrap as lefthanded pitchers get, closers definitely take the cake as the most unique players in the game. No two closers are the same, and no one style is better than the next. In my time at the University of Miami, I got to experience several unique personalities as they attacked the role. Theres both a mental and physical component to being a closer, and I am going to dissect just what it takes to excel in each area. Its the bottom of the ninth and your team is up one run. The opposing team has been building momentum, and you need to close it out and secure the win. So who do you bring in: the crazy, hyped up closer who has been chirping at the other team from the dugout all game, or the locked in reliever that has been visualizing in the corner of the dugout all game? Trick question! It doesnt matter. The majority of my career I had the extreme pleasure of watching Miamis current all-time saves leader, and 2016 Stopper of the Year, Bryan Garcia. Garcia was a fierce competitor maybe the … Continue reading
