May 4, 2017 Immunohistochemistry for alpha-synuclein showing positive staining (brown) of an intraneural Lewy-body in the Substantia nigra in Parkinson's disease. Credit: Wikipedia A study published in February in the journal Scientific Reports suggests that doxycycline, an antibiotic used against bacterial infections for over a half-century, can be prescribed at lower doses for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. According to the authors, doxycycline reduces the toxicity of -synuclein, a protein that, under certain conditions, forms abnormal accumulations of aggregates in central nervous system cells, which are damaged as a result. The death of dopaminergic neurons (which produce the neurotransmitter dopamine) is the main event relating to the development of symptoms including tremor, slow voluntary movement and stiffness, among others. There are currently no drugs capable of halting the progress of this degenerative process. Three Brazilian scientists participated in the study, which was supported by FAPESP: Elaine Del-Bel, affiliated with the University of So Paulo's Ribeiro Preto Dental School (FORP-USP), and Leandro R. S. Barbosa and Rosangela Itri, at the same university's Physics Institute (IF-USP) in the city of So Paulo. "We have exciting data from experiments with mice and great expectations that the neuroprotective effect will also be observed in … Continue reading

By Nick Coffman 05.03.2017#Expert Analysis Email Share Tweet I used to think the brain was the most wonderful organ in my body. Then I realized who was telling me this. Emo Philips The complexity of the structure and operation of a human brain is almost unfathomable. Our brains are the headquarters of the human experience: storing, sorting and reorganizing memories and even experiences that occurred before or outside of our cognitive memory; determining how we react to circumstances internally and externally; and controlling not just our functions, but our feelings, perceptions and understanding of life. A change in the brain changes the very essence of a persons identity. or Log In Filed Under: Expert Analysis, Featured, Safety & Prevention Tagged With: Alternate PTSD treatments, brain, CTE, Headline, Injury, PTSD, suicide, TBI, Veterans If you liked this article, tell someone about it Nick Coffman spent five years in the Marine Corps as a network operator, having served in Iraq with RCT-8 (8th Marine Regiment) and later with MARFORCOM. Standard current treatment Over the past decade, there has been much controversy about the use of HRT after the publication of the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) and Million Women studies. Recent re-analysis of the WHI data, along with results from other studies, has clarified the benefits and risks of HRT for specific populations.1 It is now known that low-dose HRT has a better safety profile when initiated within 10 years of the menopause and before the age of 60.1,2 Starting HRT around the time of the menopause may even reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline.1 Starting HRT 10 or more years after the last natural period is associated with increased risks.1 Women notice an improvement in their hot flushes within four weeks of starting HRT, with maximum benefits achieved by three months.3 Oestrogen-only replacement therapy should only be used in women who have had a hysterectomy. For women who still have a uterus, oestrogen is given continuously alongside a progestogen. The progestogen can either be given sequentially (if the woman is still menstruating) or continually (if there has been 12 months or more of amenorrhoea). The addition of progestogen is vital to provide endometrial protection against the … Continue reading

Women’s Eye Health – Jewish Link of New Jersey

In honor of Mothers Day, I will discuss women and eye health. There are many diseases that cause vision loss. The most common diseases are: age-related macular-degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. According to Prevent Blindness America, which is a volunteer organization that fights blindness and saves sight, the amount of Americans with age-related eye disease is expected to double in the next three decades. They also said that of the 4.1 million people who are older than 40 and have poor eyesight or are blind, 2.6 million of them are women. Here are some facts about women vs. men when it comes to eye health. In America, women are living longer than men. The United States Census Bureau data shows that there are double the amount of women living over the age of 85, while men are dying younger. Since women are outliving men, women are naturally more prone to developing age-related eye disease. In addition to the four most common eye diseases, women are more likely to have refractive errors such as near/far sightedness and astigmatism. These can cause significant vision problems but easily treatable with contact lenses, glasses or procedures such as LASIK. To figure out if … Continue reading

Don’t Fall for These Pharma Scare Tactics – The Epoch Times

Long before the Internet and direct-to-consumer advertising, the medical profession tried to reassure people about their health concerns. Remember take two aspirins and call me in the morning? Flash forward to todays online symptom checkersquizzes to see if someone has a certain disease and exhortations to see their doctor even if they feel fine. Once Pharma discovered that health fears and even hypochondria sell drugs, there seems to be no end to the new diseases, symptoms and risks people need to worry about. This ad appeared in Canadian publications in 2002. (Sandra Cohen-Rose and Colin Rose/Flickr/CC BY 2.0) In fact, since drug ads began on TV, Americans take so many drugs it inspires satirical T-shirts like the one that says I take aspirin for the headache caused by the Zyrtec I take for the hay fever I got from Relenza for the uneasy stomach from the Ritalin I take for the short attention span caused by the Scopoderm I take for the motion sickness I got from the Lomotil I take for the diarrhea caused by the Xenical for the uncontrolled weight gain from the Paxil I take for the anxiety from Zocor I take for my high cholesterol because … Continue reading

Amid uncertain future, state’s stem cell agency loses transformational leader – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Californias stem cell agency is on the hunt for a new president and CEO after the surprise announcement this week that C. Randal Mills will be departing the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. He will leave at the end of June. Mills, who has headed the agency for three years, will become the next president and CEO of the National Marrow Donor Program. CIRM is replacing him on an interim basis with Maria Millan, M.D., the agencys vice president of therapeutics. The state agency will soon begin a search for a permanent replacement, said Jonathan Thomas, CIRMs chairman. Millan is a candidate to fill that position, with Mills strong endorsement. Mills is noted for reorganizing CIRM to provide greater systemic support for translating basic research into clinical science, and to provide quicker and more helpful responses to researchers seeking funding. His initiative, called CIRM 2.0, was a response to criticism that the agency, funded with $3 billion in California bond money in 2004, has been too slow in getting treatments to patients. Agency-supported treatments are now being tested in medical centers throughout the state, including San Diego County. Most prominently, CIRM has established an alpha stem cell clinic at UC … Continue reading
