Grey's Anatomy Review: Did Meredith Betray Maggie? – TVOvermind

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2017

From day one on Greys Anatomy, Meredith Grey has had difficulty relating to the typical definition of family and sisterhood. She created her own family, adopted her own sister and brother in Alex and Cristina, and learned to accept the family she had by biology. The trick was finding out how to relate her version of family with the families her siblings grew up knowing. It worked out with Lexie, which is what made losing her sister that much more painful. That experience made Meredith that much more protective of her relationship with Maggie. Nothing makes you appreciate the sibling bond than losing one. Meredith has tried to be the best big sister she could be to Maggie, but has a lie of omission changed their bond for good? Despite the cliche, standing by your partner through the rough times does not make a relationship. Getting to the other side of those rough times stronger does. This applies to both romantic and sibling relationships. Take the medical cases of the week. April, Webber, and Stephanies worm-infested patient cant hope to keep a man when she is a medical marvel. That couple overdramatizes their romance, and when the going gets gross, … Continue reading

9 Things You Should Never Do If You Have Eczema – Health.com

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2017

Derived from the Greek language, the word eczema translates to something like to boil. And anyone who has atopic dermatitisthe most common form of eczemacan probably see why. The symptoms often shows up as red, itchy rashes on your arms and legs, and can sometimes cause open sores or resemble scaly skin. Although its possible to develop atopic dermatitis for the first time as an adult, the majority of people experience it shortly after they were born, perhaps as young as two months old. Most people outgrow it in their early teens, but it can come back later in life, says Whitney High, MD, an associate professor of dermatology and pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, in Denver. For some people, atopic dermatitis continues through into adulthood and never lets up. The condition itself is likely hereditary, and usually runs in the same circles as allergic rhinitis and asthma. Families that have one child with eczema often have another child with asthma or even a third child with seasonal rhinitis or hay fever, he says. To limit your odds of experiencing a flare up, here are nine things to avoid. A long soak in the tub might … Continue reading

Yoga tied to better quality of life with ulcerative colitis – Reuters

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2017

(Reuters Health) - Weekly yoga sessions may be associated with a better quality of life for patients with ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can be exacerbated by stress, a small study suggests. People with ulcerative colitis have inflammation in the lining of the large intestine that can lead to symptoms like diarrhea and abdominal pain. When symptoms are severe, patients may have sudden loose or bloody stools so often that it impairs their ability to navigate normal daily activities like going to school or work. Researchers studied 77 ulcerative colitis patients who reported a reduced quality of life due to the disease even though their symptoms were clinically in remission. They randomly assigned participants to receive either 12 weekly yoga sessions or written self-care advice and found the yoga group had greater improvements in quality of life. It seems to be safe and effective, so it is surely worth trying yoga as an add-on to other evidence-based interventions at least for maintenance of remission, said lead study author Dr. Holger Cramer, a researcher at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. It definitely should not be used as a replacement but rather as an ancillary intervention, Cramer said … Continue reading

Fecal microbiota transplant is safe and effective for patients with ulcerative colitis – Science Daily

Posted: Published on May 1st, 2017

A single transplant of microbes contained in the stool of a healthy donor is a safe and effective way to increase diversity of good bacteria in the guts of patients with ulcerative colitis, according to new research from Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian. The findings suggest that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) might be an effective treatment for the disease, which causes inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract. Fecal microbiota transplantation is a procedure in which fecal matter -- which is full of bacteria from the gut -- is collected from a healthy donor, strained and placed in the colon of a patient with inflammatory bowel disease. "The idea is that you can change someone's microbiome, the organisms that colonize the gut," said Dr. Randy Longman, an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and a gastroenterologist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. "We introduce good bacteria into the intestines of someone with the disease and hope that it encourages healing." FMT has been proven effective for patients with Clostridium difficile, a serious bacterial infection of the intestines, but questions remain about its effectiveness as a treatment for other diseases. In a study published April 26 in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, … Continue reading

CME Outfitters to offer livestream broadcast on ulcerative colitis from a live symposium taking place at a national medical meeting Bethesda, MD (PRWEB) April 29, 2017 CME Outfitters (CMEO) is set to host a live symposium on entitled Deep Remission, Top-Down Treatment Strategies and Real-World Data in Patients with UC: An Interactive and Innovative Case Series, at 5:30 7:00PM CT (6:30-8:00PM ET) on Sunday, May 7th, 2017 at a national medical meeting being held at the Sheraton Grand Chicago in Chicago, IL. Commonly known as UC, ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by exacerbations and remissions and, traditionally, goals of treatment have entailed resolution of clinical symptoms. Unfortunately, conventional therapies have not been overall effective and can carry adverse risk that often require discontinuation. In recent years, treatment goals have evolved to a treat-to-target strategy with target such as deep-remission (i.e, clinical, biochemical, and endoscopic remission) with the end goal of preventing long-term structural damage and disability. Pursuits of better targeted therapy to optimize IBD clinical outcomes have … Continue reading

St. Anthony’s Triathlon journal: Sarasota man helps people with … – Tampabay.com

ST. PETERSBURG Greg Simony finished the sprint division of the St. Anthony's Triathlon in 1 hour, 42 minutes, 38 seconds Sunday, but throughout the race he was "attached." In each of the swimming, biking and running phases, Simony was either pulling or pushing a participant from the Sarasota area with cerebral palsy. In the 750-meter swim, Simony pulled along Kelly Marsh in a specifically designed raft. In the 20-kilometer bike ride, Simony pulled Nadia McKinnon in an oversized stroller hooked to his bike. And on the 10K run, he pushed Jeff Park in the same stroller that easily transitioned in the transition area. For Simony, 38, this was nothing new. Since 2010, he has helped dozens of people with disabilities experience races through the organization he founded, Care2Tri ( care2tri.org). "I wanted to do something that challenged me and that was bigger than me," Simony said. "In this case, when you take the focus off yourself, you end up helping others." Simony plans to push and pull many others through more races, but he also hopes to host a race featuring only entrants with disabilities or runners attached to people with disabilities. "It's in the works," he said. Wind whips … Continue reading
