Cardiology quality collaborative celebrates 20 years of improvements – University of Michigan Health System News (press release)

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2017

An effort to improve quality of care and outcomes for heart patients is marking two decades of statewide collaboration. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Cardiovascular Consortium, or BMC2, was created in 1997, and has since inspired additional initiatives in other specialty areas. The percutaneous coronary intervention registry started as a collaboration of five hospitals and has now expanded to include all non-federal hospitals in the state. In the past 20 years, it has collected data from more than 400,000 PCI cases performed at 48 hospitals. We are able to compare outcomes and processes across hospitals to openly explore what is working well and where institutions can learn from each other, says Hitinder Gurm, M.D., a Michigan Medicine interventional cardiologist who leads BMC2 and runs the PCI registry. Our goal is to create a culture of safety, reduce complications, improve appropriateness and share best practices so that all patients across the state will benefit. Gurm, also associate chief of cardiovascular medicine at Michigan Medicines Frankel Cardiovascular Center and a member of U-Ms Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, said the positive competition improves outcomes at each facility. Results include a 41 percent decrease in post-procedure blood transfusions and 10 percent decrease … Continue reading

3SBio: Is this Chinese Biotechnology Stock a Buy? – Barron’s (blog)

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2017

By Isabella Zhong Shenyang-based 3SBio (1530.HK) is a biopharmaceutical pioneer that offers a unique play on Chinas rising demand for healthcare. The company is best known for its rheumatoid arthritis drug YSP, which accounts for 33% of revenues, and TPIAO, a hormone used in the treatment of platelet deficiencies. While YSP and TPIAO are expected to deliver strong sales growth in coming years, a recent price cut for anemia drug EPIAO and limited R&D upside in the near term could weigh on 3SBio. Jefferies analyst Eugene Huang initiated coverage of the stock today with a hold rating and an HKD11.50 a share target price, which implies 11% upside. Huang has more on 3SBios drugs pipeline: 3SBios HER2 (breast cancer) and CD20 (lymphoma) candidates were withdrawn, leaving peers like Fosun potentially to become FTM generics. Besides, we factored in Rmb20/50/110m 17/18/19E sales from Bydureon (exenatide ER, GLP-1, diabetes), which is pending NDA approval. We are concerned there might be a lack of synergy between 3SBio and AstraZenecas diabetes team as well as integration risks. Shares of 3SBio are up 37% this year and trade at 23 times forward earnings, which is in line with its five year average. Analysts surveyed by … Continue reading

Class XII students to get a grace mark in biology paper – Times of India

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2017

CHENNAI: The Madras high court has ordered that all Class XII students who wrote the Biology examination on March 31, and attempted question number 16 in Section A of Part II, should be awarded one mark each, as all answers for the multiple-choice type question were incorrect. Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, passing orders on a batch of petitions, asked the director of government examinations to take necessary steps to award one mark each for students, and/or recompute the marks if the evaluation is already done. "In the interest of the career of students, marks have to be awarded. Though that should be only an exception, unfortunately, the exception has become a rule. Therefore, the authorities have to be careful in setting the question papers," said Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana. Petitioners said that according to the text book, the correct answer for the question was 85% to 90%, but the multiple choice answers did not have this right answer at all. When it was pointed out to authorities, they said students ought to have ticked the 'most suitable' answer which was 80 or 90%. They said no mark could be awarded for those who had not ticked option (a). However, the judge pointed … Continue reading

My passion for biology stems primarily from my desire to be a surgeon,Vrieswyk said.I am challenged by it because no matter how much I learn, there is always more information and knowledge to be had. The intricate inner workings of the human body never cease to amaze me, so I continue to challenge myself with the pursuit of knowledge, in order to hopefully apply it in medical school and my career. The aspirations for a career in the medical field were fueled this past summer when Vrieswyk attended a nomination and merit-based medical internship in Boston. Vrieswyk is very active outside the classroom as well.
