The heartbroken parents of a popular Exeter rugby player Lily Partridge who died of a head injury after playing the sport she loved have said she will never be forgotten by the people who loved her. An inquest at Exeter's County Hall today heard that although the 22-year-old, of Exeter, had suffered other previous head injuries, it was an incident during a training session on December 6, 2015, that caused her death. However, the exact cause of how she sustained the injury was unable to be determined. After the hearing, her heartbroken parents Jeff and Liz urged players to have brain scans if suffer any head injury during matches. The 61-year-old couple, from Exeter, Devon, said: "Lily loved playing rugby and her dream was to represent Devon. She was the victim of a tragic accident and no one is to blame for what happened to her. "Rugby is a hard game and Lily took all the precautions to protect herself when playing. Waco VA opens new facility to study brain injuries | City Of Waco … – Waco Tribune-Herald

Wacos Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center now can provide the gold standard in research and treatment for brain injuries suffered on the battlefield with Thursdays opening of a 53,000-square-foot facility for the VISN 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans that sprawls across three floors of Building 93. More than 150 people attended a grand-opening ceremony to mark the occasion, and U.S. Rep. Bill Flores said the Waco VA will become a hub for dealing with the invisible wounds of post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury that have become part of this countrys global war on terror. McLennan County has become one of the most popular places for veterans to live or retire, and the Center of Excellence likely will mean more veterans locating here, Flores said. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent $9.8 million to renovate a building at the VA campus on Memorial Drive to create a one-stop destination for research on returning war veterans. We let the contract in 2011, and our target for completion was 2014, but we lost two years because the original contractor defaulted, an issue that tied up a couple of years, said Michael … Continue reading

Sanofi Genzyme to Present New Data on MS Treatments Lemtrada and Aubagio – Multiple Sclerosis News Today

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Sanofi Genzyme will present new results on follow-up studies of its products Lemtrada (alemtuzumab) and Aubagio (teriflunomide), both of which have been approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The new data will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meetingtaking place through April 28 in Boston. Lemtrada and the CARE II extension trial Lemtrada is an antibody treatment that specifically targets the CD52 protein, which is present on the surface of certain immune cells, such as T- and B-lymphocytes, thereby blocking their action. This drug was under investigation in RRMS patients in the Phase 3 CARE-MS II trial (NCT00548405). Results showed that most patients on Lemtrada (330 patients, or 76%) had no relapses between their first and second treatment courses, but 24% (105 patients) did relapse between courses. Nonetheless, relapsing patients receiving Lemtrada presented significantly greater improvements on clinical and brain imaging outcomes compared to Rebif (interferon beta-1a), another drug approved as an MS therapy. Results of an extension trial (NCT00930553) with six years of follow-up showed that this group of patients had similar improvement to those who did not relapse between courses: The new Lemtrada data being presented at AAN suggest that occurrence … Continue reading

I want to see my kids grow up: dad’s plea for 65k to fund MS treatment – Belfast Telegraph

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

A Co Antrim father-of-five with Multiple Sclerosis is trying to raise 65,000 to undergo stem cell treatment in Mexico, which he hopes will allow him to see his children grow up. Glenariff farmer John McNaughton, who suffers from the secondary progressive form of the disease, was diagnosed six years ago at the age of just 37. Now mostly wheelchair-bound, John has gone from being an active hurling player to having to give up his herd of cattle while assuming an "overseeing" role on the family farm. His eldest son Shea (13) helps out with the practical aspects of managing the farm's sheep, assisted by his siblings Clodagh (11) Eoin (8) and Ruairi (6). His youngest child, Shannon, is just three-years-old, and John has only been able to carry her once since she was born, due to his illness. Speaking during MS Week, John (43), told the Belfast Telegraph that while his life has totally changed since his diagnosis he is "staying positive" for his kids and his wife Patricia, who is now his full-time carer. "I was diagnosed in May 2011 but my symptoms appeared three years before that when I was 34", he recalled. "My balance wasn't as good … Continue reading

Researchers Invent Stem Cell Capable of Becoming an Entire Embryo – Futurism

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

A New Type of Stem Cell While much has been gleaned about the power of stem cells over the last few decades, researchers from the Salk Institute and Peking Universityin China recently found out theres plenty left to discover and invent. Nature, it seems, will always keep you guessing. In a study published in the journal Cell, the team of researchers revealed they had succeeded in creating a new kind of stem cell thats capable of becoming any type of cell in the human body. Extended pluripotent stem cells or EPS cells are similar to induced pluripotent stem cells(iPS cells), which were invented in 2006. The key difference between the two is that iPS cells are made from skin cells (called fibroblasts) and EPS cells are made from a combination of skin cells and embryonic stem cells. iPS cells are the hallmark of stem cell research and can be programmed to become any cell in the human body hence the pluripotent part of their name. EPS cells, too, can give rise to any type of cell in the human body, but they can also do something very different something unprecedented, actually: they can create the tissues needed to nourish and … Continue reading

Are baby, wisdom teeth the next wave in stem cell treatment? – CNN

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

It's based on experimental research that suggests stem cells extracted from the pulp of these teeth might someday regrow a lost adult tooth or offer other regenerative medicine benefits -- some potentially life-saving. "So I'll try not to get emotional here, but my husband was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2011," said Bassetto, of Naperville, Illinois, head of a sales team at a software company. In 2012, her husband, James, had a stem cell transplant to restore his bone marrow and renew his blood. "He was very fortunate. He was one of six kids, and his brother was a perfect match," she said. She noted that her two children, Madeline, 23, and Alex, 19, may not be so lucky if they develop health problems, since they have only each other; the chance of two siblings being a perfect stem cell match is only 25%. Unfortunately, her husband's stem cell transplant was not successful. He developed graft-versus-host disease, where his brother's donated stem cells attacked his own cells, and he died shortly afterward. However, she says, the transplant had given him a chance at a longer life. Last year, when her son saw a dentist for wisdom tooth pain, a … Continue reading

Skin stem cells used to generate new brain cells – Science Daily

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Using human skin cells, University of California, Irvine neurobiologists and their colleagues have created a method to generate one of the principle cell types of the brain called microglia, which play a key role in preserving the function of neural networks and responding to injury and disease. The finding marks an important step in the use of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells for targeted approaches to better understand and potentially treat neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's. These iPS cells are derived from existing adult skin cells and show increasing utility as a promising approach for studying human disease and developing new therapies. Skin cells were donated from patients at the UCI Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. The study, led by Edsel Abud, Wayne Poon and Mathew Blurton Jones of UCI, used a genetic process to reprogram these cells into a pluripotent state capable of developing into any type of cell or tissue of the body. The researchers then guided these pluripotent cells to a new state by exposing the cells to a series of differentiation factors which mimicked the developmental origin of microglia. The resulting cells act very much like human microglial cells. Their study appears in the current issue of … Continue reading

More than 1,000 people, including USD students, chose to participate in the March for Science in Sioux Falls on Earth Day. Morgan Matzen / The Volante In recognition of Earth Day and in light of President Trumps proposed cuts tothe Environmental Protection Agency budget, marches took place on Saturday around the globe. More than 1,000people joined in solidarity in the Sioux Falls March for Science, including USD students from the biology, sustainability and chemistry clubs on campus. Jessica Romero, president of the biology club, said several concerns prompted her to march. Im marching for truth from the government, especially in the modern political climate, Romero said. Theres a lot of denial on things like climate change, and so many budget cuts for food safety and public health, and for what Im interested in, which is ecology and conservation. Romero, a junior majoring in conservation biology and sustainability, said she was upset to see that the EPA is at risk for budget cuts and that the National Park Service (NPS)is being censored. When NPS is being censored, what does that mean for us? Its upsetting to see all these cuts to my future, Romero said. Funding is really important. I think we … Continue reading
