Pretty in Pink: Young Violinist Relies on New 3D Printed Prosthetic … – 3DPrint.com

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Everyone should have the opportunity to make music. This is a skill that not only offers the same happiness we feel in listening, but also challenges and stimulates the brain. The violin is known to be one of the more challenging instruments to play, and children are often started off at an early age. They receive not only an intellectual workout, but also a physical one as their upper body strength is put to the test (especially at first) as they hold the violin on the shoulder and then use the other hand and arm to manipulate the bow. Anyone learning to play will probably find that both their memory and focus become sharper. Discipline, fortitude, and will are all required in learning to master such an instrument. Obviously, Isabella Nicola Cabrera, age ten, has all these traitsalong with the students from George Mason University who decided to make her a 3D printed prosthetic so she could play her violin. George Mason, located in Fairfax, VA, boasts a progressive bioengineering department. There, they use tools meant to bring together the worlds of both biology and medicine, with Cabreras prosthetic serving as a prime example of what engineering can do in … Continue reading

Jesse Williams' Divorce: The Grey's Anatomy Star and Wife Clashed over Living in L.A., Says Source – PEOPLE.com

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

News of Jesse Williams split from wife Aryn Drake-Lee came as a shock to Greys Anatomy fans and to those who know the former couple well. None of us saw this coming, a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE exclusively. Jesse lived for her. Williams, 35, wed Drake-Lee in 2012 after five years of dating and is father to their two young children: daughter Sadie, 3, and son Maceo, who was born in 2015. The source believes the Greys star was the one to actually file for divorce. If you knew the couple they were back in Brooklyn, when he had dreads and a backpack and she was grinding doing real estate, you wouldnt believe it,explains the source, who thinks the pairs relocation to Los Angeles contributed to tensions in their relationship. [Aryn] thought everyone was so different from their friends back in New York, and not as genuine, says the source, who adds that the couple was in the middle of adding a second wing to their L.A. home when news of the divorce broke Monday. Adds the source: And Jesse was never really around because of work and she was always just with the kids. Still, we … Continue reading

Anatomy of a goal: Breaking down the Seattle Sounders' second tally against the LA Galaxy – SoundersFC.com

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Last Sunday in a 3-0 road win overthe LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer opted to start Will Bruin up front and move Jordan Morris to the left wing. And for the first time in 2017, the Sounders offense clicked looked the explosive juggernaut it could be. The reason why the adjustment is so successful is because it more naturally suits Morris and Bruins styles of play. Morris is much more of a second striker and loves to run at defenders in space. Bruin is a target forward by trade, who is comfortable with his back to goal and stretching center backs deep. Watching the Sounders front four operate against the Galaxy was like watching poetry in motion, the way Morris, Bruin, Clint Dempsey and Nicolas Lodeiro bossed the attacking third. In previous matches, Dempsey, Lodeiro and Harry Shipp stepped on each others toes and often made the same runs, while Morris was left on an island and a non-factor. Thepersonnel shift Schmetzer made last Sunday unlocked another offensive dimension. To see how effectively this worked, lets take a look at the second goal the Sounders scored against the Galaxy. It was an own goal off the foot … Continue reading

Using antique wax figures to learn about anatomy – Scope (blog)

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Look at the detail inside the heart, said Paul Brown, DDS, a consulting associate professor of anatomy at Stanford. Isnt that phenomenal? I tend to turn away at the sight of blood or bones. And yet here I was, inside of an anatomy lab on assignment and admiring high-resolution photographs of human anatomy wax sculptures. The wax statues, or waxes, were created 250 years ago in Florence, Italy and are located in La Specola, one of the worlds oldest museums of natural history. The museum is home to about a thousand wax figures; each meant to capture the intricacies of what lies beneath the skin. Brown, who loves creating digital libraries of medical images, has captured around 200 of the waxes in an effort to make them accessible, and to use them as visual aids in anatomy classrooms at Stanford and beyond. We were introduced to the waxes this year,Shayan Fakurnejad, a second-year medical student, told me for an Inside Stanford Medicine piece I wrote on the wax figures. Theyre really a great way of simplifying some of the anatomy you see in the cadavers. Theyre just gorgeous pieces, too. But medical students arent the only ones using the waxes … Continue reading

Anatomy Lab Live coming to Merseyside – have a slap up meal then witness a 'human' dissection at bizarre show – Liverpool Echo

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Lungs, intestines, kidneys and bladder dont sound much like the inspiration for a fascinating night out. But thats exactly what the organisers behind a dissection and dinner event coming to Liverpool in June have in mind for guests. Part of the Anatomy Lab LIVE tour, ticket holders can watch the anatomist Samuel Piri at work on a synthetic human cadaver - called VIVIT - which houses genuine organs (sourced from pigs due to their similarity with humans) so that people can get a clearer idea of the importance of good health and combating disease. As part of the process, Samuel will dissect VIVIT to reveal the workings of the head and jaw, brain and spinal cord, trachea, lungs and heart and on to the abdominal cavity. From there, he will explore the stomach, liver, gall bladder, intestines, kidneys and bladder. These will then be compared with examples of organs damaged by excessive alcohol and cigarettes to show how much damage people can do to themselves. An opportunity for questions follows as well as the chance for guests to handle the organs themselves. The dissection is preceded by a two-course dinner. Samuel said: The human bosy is a complex machine, VIVIT … Continue reading

Capricor Therapeutics Stock Surging on Positive Muscular Dystrophy Trial Results – TheStreet.com

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Shares of Capricor Therapeutics (CAPR) were gaining by 11.65% to $3.46 on heavy trading volume Tuesday morning, after the clinical-stage biotechnology company reported positive results from its randomized phase I/II HOPE clinical trial in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The positive top-line results from a safety and exploratory efficacy analysis of six months of data from the randomized 12-month trial shows the CAP-1002 product as an investigational candidate for the treatment of patients with DMD. DMD is a rare, life threatening disease for which there is little treatment, the company said. "In HOPE, we saw potential effects in both the heart and skeletal muscle that appear quite compelling in an exploratory trial. These results clearly support the conduct of a confirmatory clinical trial in DMD to further evaluate the potential of CAP-1002. We look forward to an effective medication becoming available for people with this progressive and fatal disease, one that is poorly met by current options," John L. Jefferies, M.D. and the principal investigator of the HOPE trial said. (What will move markets this quarter and how should investors position themselves ahead of time? Jim Cramer sat down with four of TheStreet's top columnists recently to get their views. Click here … Continue reading
