Studies highlight Zika-linked neurologic damage – CIDRAP

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Two new studies show fatal spinal damage and cognitive impairment associated with Zika infection, while Chinese and American researchers report unsurprising results about the vector competence of the virus in different mosquito species. Two Brazilian babies who died shortly after birth were found to have severe spinal cord injuries linked to prenatal Zika expose, according to a study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases. In both cases, the mothers reported Zika infection symptoms during the first trimester of pregnancy. In the first case, a baby boy was born at 36.7 weeks' gestation and died shortly after childbirth. Postmortem autopsy revealed severe deformity of the spinal cord, with a marked loss of boundaries between gray and white matter. Zika RNA was found in the spinal cord but was not detected in the heart, kidney, or sexual organs. The second case involved another baby boy, born at 37 weeks' gestation, whose mother had confirmed Zka infection after developing a rash and fever in the second month of pregnancy. Autopsy showed extensive brain damage, including damage to the optic nerves and frontal lobes and brainstem atrophy. Zika RNA was found in brain and spinal samples but not in other organs. The authors say the … Continue reading

Christopher Reeve, he always said his goal was to have a world with empty wheelchairs. Since hes passed on, I feel like its my time to do my due diligence and take over. Do whatever I can to raise awareness, raise funds, so we can have a world with empty wheelchairs. - Eric LeGrand I had the pleasure of interviewing the always inspiring Eric LeGrand recently in his suite at the New York Red Bulls game, where he was promoting his upcoming Wings for Life event. As you can see in the picture above, Eric was able to take part in the opening coin toss for the April 15th game against D.C. United. Spoiler alert: They won! I must be a better good luck charm at soccer games than for Rutgers Football. Anyway, back on track. Given Erics involvement with the Christopher Reeve Foundation, he has partnered up with Wings for Life to help promote their life-saving work and their World Run on May 7, 2017. For those not familiar with this amazing organization, Wings for Life is a not-for-profit spinal cord research foundation. Eric has been involved with the foundation for 3-4 years, and each year they have a … Continue reading

Tadhg was a complete non-walker, but can now walk independently with a walker. THE parents of a six-year-old boy from Clonsilla with cerebral palsy have thanked locals for their support in helping make his wish to walk come true. Three years ago, Tadhg Kellys parents, Jonathan Kelly from Ballymun and Moya Muldowney from Co Mayo, were advised by doctors to put their son into an electric wheelchair as hed never walk and wasnt a candidate for surgery. Born six and half weeks premature, Tadhg began having seizures when he was seven-months-old. At 13 months he was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. The condition left him unable to walk, or even crawl, so he moved by pulling himself along the floor. Jonathan and Moya refused to accept hed never walk and after researching his condition found many other Irish children with similar problems who had travelled to America for treatment. Further research led them to renowned neurological surgeon Dr Tae Sung Park of St Louis Children's Hospital in Missouri who specialises in treating children with cerebral palsy. His lawyers sued East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, for damages. READ MORE: 17million compensation for girl left with brain damage following birth at Lister Hospital The NHS trust agreed to pay him a lump-sum of 2.475million and to make index-linked and tax-free annual payments, starting at 240,000, to settle the case. John Whitting QC apologised on behalf of the trust, saying 'the care which he received was not of the standard he was entitled to expect and for this we are genuinely sorry'. The QC hoped the pay-out would 'at least provide some security to him' for the rest of his life. Approving the settlement, Judge Richard Pearce described it as being … Continue reading

Care of the Neck as Vital as Head in Injury Prevention – Scoop.co.nz (press release)

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

26th April 2017 Care of the Neck as Vital as Head in Sports Injury Prevention, Say NZ Chiropractors Research is increasingly showing that concussion injuries not only affect the brain but also the neck upon which the head moves during impact according to the New Zealand Chiropractors Association[1]. Dr Cassandra Fairest, chiropractor and spokesperson for the New Zealand Chiropractors Association explains: `Many people affected by concussion dont understand the neck and spine are also traumatised. They also dont realise the link between upper neck dysfunction as a possible cause of headaches and dizziness which often gets passed off as coming from the mild traumatic brain injury but responds well to chiropractic care1. `It is paramount the spine, and in particular the cervical spine and nervous system, are checked with any such injury to the head. We know that concussions occur in all contact sports with the highest incidence in rugby, soccer, hockey and basketball, and that youth athletes may have a more prolonged recovery and are more susceptible to a concussion accompanied by a catastrophic injury[2]. The greater number, severity and duration of symptoms after a concussion are predictors of a prolonged recovery. The uppermost part of the neck protects … Continue reading

TECFIDERA and TYSABRI Data Demonstrate Improved … – Yahoo Finance

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Biogen (BIIB) announced new real-world data that show treatment with its leading multiple sclerosis (MS) therapies, TECFIDERA (dimethyl fumarate) and TYSABRI (natalizumab), early in the course of the disease may improve outcomes for people living with relapsing MS. These data were presented at the 69th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) in Boston. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks and causes inflammation within the central nervous system. Initiating an appropriate disease modifying therapy soon after diagnosis has been shown to slow the physical and cognitive decline associated with MS and may prevent the accumulation of future disability, allowing people living with MS to stay active longer.1,2 The new real-world TECFIDERA and TYSABRI data presented at AAN emphasize the importance of effective treatment early in the course of ones disease, said Kate Dawson, M.D., vice president, U.S. Medical at Biogen. Timely treatment with appropriate therapies can help mitigate damage caused by MS and delay long-term disability for people with the disease. Comparative Effectiveness Data Further Support Use of TECFIDERA in Early MS TECFIDERA is the worlds most prescribed oral therapy for MS. A comparison of real-world data provides further evidence of its … Continue reading

Brain protein may unlock key to multiple sclerosis treatment – study – RT

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2017

Published time: 24 Apr, 2017 19:21Edited time: 25 Apr, 2017 07:53 Scientists have made significant progress in finding the cause of multiple sclerosis (MS), discovering the presence of a protein in brain tissue that may help lead to a treatment for the disease that affects 2.5 million people worldwide. Researchers at the University of Exeter in the UK and the University of Alberta in Canada found large quantities of the protein Rab32 in brain tissue samples taken from people who had MS but was almost entirely absent in those without the condition. The protein can cause cells that store calcium to get too close to the mitochondria, an energy-producing membrane, causing it to misbehave, according to the research published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation. Scientists previously believed that the mitochondria played a role in MS but were unable to uncover why. The cause of the increase in Rab32 is still unknown, but researchers suspect a defect at the base of the cell could be responsible. Our exciting new findings have uncovered a new avenue for researchers to explore. It is a critical step, and in time we hope it might lead to effective new treatments for MS, Paul Eggleton from … Continue reading
