Cerner adds concussion care platform to athlete management system – Healthcare IT News

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

Healthcare technology giant Cerner plans to integrate its HealtheAthlete technology with NeuroLogix Technologies C3Logix concussion management system. Nate Hogan, general manager of HealtheAthlete, defines the technology as a cloud-based sports medicine and athlete health management system that enables providers to document injury, rehabilitation, conditioning and health-related events. The information can be accessed from a computer or mobile device almost anywhere, anytime, he adds, and the system also provides built-in tracking and analysis tools. HealtheAthlete captures critical health data throughout the life of an injury, and our collaboration with C3Logix will help with the health and safety of athletes across high school, collegiate and professional settings, Hogan said in a statement. Nearly 4 million U.S. athletes suffer a concussion every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which claims that timely recognition and appropriate response is critical in treating a mild traumatic brain injury, and early diagnosis and management are key components. The C3Logix system, developed at Cleveland Clinic and commercialized by NeuroLogix Technologies, makes it possible for physicians, athletic trainers and other trained personnel to assess neurologic impairment. Athletes are given a series of tests at the beginning of the season to create a baseline. The same … Continue reading

Brain injury: ”Fighting’ has become my mission in life since my son Pdraig’s catastrophic accident’ – thejournal.ie

Reinhard Schaler Founder and CEO of the An Saol Foundation I AM WRITING here on behalf of the voiceless, the people lost in HSE statistics, plans, strategies and task forces. Those for whom the institutions continue to make decisions in their best interest. I am not neutral on this matter. German born, I have my own collective memory about the State taking control of what is best for sick people. I also have years of personal experience as the father of a catastrophic brain injury survivor. The truth is that the fight for life has become my mission in life since our son Pdraigs accident in 2013, when he was hit by a truck trying to overtake him with oncoming traffic, as he was cycling to work on Cape Cod. He was spending the summer there on a J1. Lack of staff and resources On September 2 2008, the Irish Times reported that the NRH got the green light for 235-bed facility with the new building to be completed by 2012. Fast forward 9 years to earlier this week, when the issue of bed closures in the existing National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH), and the fact that the new building was … Continue reading

A key component of this international meeting is the SCAI Lecture Series, which will feature renowned speakers who will challenge current thinking in the field and inspire the next generation of interventional cardiologists. Long Beach VA Health Care System Chief of Medicine Morton J. Kern, MD, MSCAI,will deliver the Hildner Lecture. Kern will focus on how coronary physiology techniques can be effectively used and whats in the future, keeping with one of the main goals of the SCAI Scientific Sessions to provide a framework for attendees to learn about new techniques and how they can be applied. Interventional cardiology has matured in the field of coronary intervention, but is just now blossoming in the field of structural heart disease, said Kern. I think the next wave of advances to come will be an increasing number of sophisticated structural heart disease interventions performed using miniaturized equipment. Anne Le Grand with IBM Watson Health will present the featured lecture, … Continue reading

Frye Regional Medical Center hosts annual Heart Walk at YMCA to spread heart health awareness – Hickory Daily Record

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

HICKORY Frye Regional Medical Center (FRMC) hosted its annual Heart Walk on Saturday morning at the Hickory Foundation YMCA Walking Track to celebrate the hospitals heart center and educate the community on heart health. Our program is the only full service cardiovascular program, FRMC CEO Gar Atchison said. The FRMC Heart Center includes cardiologists, invasive cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, electrophysiology and cardiovascular surgery. We will have patients come through the emergency department showing signs of a heart attack, Atchinson said. Sometimes, interventional cardiology can put a stint in to stop the heart attack, but other patients need more. Patients who need more heart care at FRMC do not have to travel very far to receive the appropriate level of care. We have this integrated full-service team that works together to provide continuity so a patient does not have to be transported somewhere else to get the right kind of intervention, which delays the care, all of which creates poor outcomes, Atchinson said. FRMC works with Duke Lifepoint and its focus is on the cooperation between the various parts of the heart center to improve cardiovascular care. The heart program a Frye is one of the best around us, Ghassan Alkoutami, cardiologist … Continue reading

The U.S. Regulations for Biotechnology Are Woefully Out of Date – Slate Magazine

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

CRISPR is a gene-editing tool that enables scientists to do things like turn off the enzyme that makes mushrooms turn brown when bruised or cut. Brand X Pictures/Thinkstock In April 2016, an unlikely thing made headlines: the common white button mushroom. Gene-Edited CRISPR Mushroom Escapes US Regulation, wrote Nature. Whats a GMO? Apparently Not These Magic Mushrooms, wrote Grist. And from MIT Technology Review: Who Approved the Genetically Engineered Foods Coming to Your Plate? No One. The white button mushroom in question looked like any other in the grocery store, with one imperceptible difference: It was missing a gene that codes for an enzyme called PPO, or polyphenol oxidase, which makes mushrooms turn brown when theyre bruised or cut. Scientists at Pennsylvania State University essentially turned off this PPO geneone of six in the mushroomwith a new gene-editing tool called CRISPR, or clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats. CRISPR is a bit like a biological word processor. It zooms to a specific genetic sequence in any living thingthe biotech equivalent of using Ctrl+F. Then, the tool can add, delete, or replace genetic information like an editor tweaking a sentence. While the Penn State scientists used biotechnology to manipulate the mushrooms … Continue reading

Agriculture’s biotechnology has a bright future – Farm and Ranch Guide

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

FARGO, N.D. Those attending the recent International Sugarbeet Institute in Fargo got a glimpse of what the future of agriculture is going to look like. That peek into the future was made possible by the keynote speaker Robert Fraley, Ph.D., the executive vice president and chief technology officer at Monsanto. In addition, he is often recognized as the father of agricultural biotechnology. In his position, Fraley has his finger on the pulse of agricultures future, which he claims is very strong and promising. Ive been doing this at Monsanto for 37 years, he said, and I would tell you today that the amount of science coming into agriculture is just stunning. I helped invent GMO. Today we are talking about the second or third generation beyond GMO. From those first Roundup Ready soybeans and BT cotton approved about 20 years ago, a wide variety of crops have been added to the list such as corn, canola, sugarbeets and alfalfa, along with many other lesser crops, he noted. Fraley feels the most important advancement of adapting GMO technology is the ability to use germplasm from all around the world. This means the next improvement in corn could easily come from a … Continue reading

Biology: Standing up for science that challenges ignorance, power – The Columbus Dispatch

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

Science became a science because it spoke truth to the ignorance that threatened human well-being. Science also spoke truth to power, especially when that power profited from the ignorance of others. Science and scientists often get criticized for this, especially when they challenge ignorance and power at the same time. The history of science, and especially the history of biology, lies in the history of our efforts to understand infectious diseases and develop policies to combat them. Many modern methods of science first appeared during battles to control infectious diseases and save lives. Societies develop public policies in response to challenges they face. They base policies on their understanding of a challenge and its cause. Get the hypothesis to explain the cause wrong and, the policy to confront the challenge likely will fail. The Black Death presented 14th century European society with such a challenge. Traveling the Silk Road from Central Asia, the plague invaded Crimea in 1343 and spread to all of Europe. The inability of European policymakers to understand the pandemics causes led to the death of half of Europes population, according to some historians. Hypotheses at the time included that the plague was the wrath of God, … Continue reading

Microbiology focus is now available for aspiring biology majors – UAA Northern Light

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

Photo credit: Jian Bautista For many biology majors, a microbiology focus is not only beneficial, but recommended. Due to the high demand for microbiology in various biological fields, being educated in the subject will allow more opportunities for jobs around the globe. Most states already have some sort of a microbiology program. Microbes are intricately involved in our own lives: how we digest food, theres research coming out about our own moods, antibiotics, antibiotic resistance in the medical field, to some of the stuff I do out in the environment, Brandon Briggs, assistant professor for the biology department at UAA, said. The need for microbiology in various fields is growing, the desire for a course in microbiology is becoming more and more of a necessity. [Microbes] really affect every aspect of our lives, Khrys Duddleston, professor in the biology department, said. A lot of what we learned, especially early on about genetics, we learned by studying bacteria. Because microorganisms are so easy to grow in the lab many of them are, I should say so you can grow them overnight, generate a lot of cells, you can carry out a variety of studies in which you can mutate their genomes. … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Murder (1959) – IMDb

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

Edit Storyline Frederick Manion (Ben Gazzara), a lieutenant in the army, is arrested for the murder of a bartender, Barney Quill. He claims, in his defense, that the victim had raped and beaten up his wife Laura (Lee Remick). Although Laura supports her husband's story, the police surgeon can find no evidence that she has been raped. Manion is defended by Paul Biegler (James Stewart), a rather humble small-town lawyer. During the course of interviews, Biegler discovers that Manion is violently possessive and jealous, and also that his wife has a reputation for giving her favors to other men. Biegler realizes that the prosecution will try to make the court believe that Laura was the lover of the bartender and than Manion killed him and beat her up when he discovered them together. Manion pleads "not guilty" and Biegler, who knows that his case is weak, sets his assistants to try to find a witness who will save Manion.
