Anatomy of a Murder (1959) – IMDb

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

Edit Storyline Frederick Manion (Ben Gazzara), a lieutenant in the army, is arrested for the murder of a bartender, Barney Quill. He claims, in his defense, that the victim had raped and beaten up his wife Laura (Lee Remick). Although Laura supports her husband's story, the police surgeon can find no evidence that she has been raped. Manion is defended by Paul Biegler (James Stewart), a rather humble small-town lawyer. During the course of interviews, Biegler discovers that Manion is violently possessive and jealous, and also that his wife has a reputation for giving her favors to other men. Biegler realizes that the prosecution will try to make the court believe that Laura was the lover of the bartender and than Manion killed him and beat her up when he discovered them together. Manion pleads "not guilty" and Biegler, who knows that his case is weak, sets his assistants to try to find a witness who will save Manion. An anatomy of a killing – Arkansas Online

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2017

It's a calm Thursday morning with a peaceful breeze. The state of Arkansas waits to find out whether it will get to scratch its itch and kill a man or two this evening. It has been a dozen long execution-barren years in Arkansas. And now those damnable courts ... Arkansas is not handling stress well. Bart Hester, a state senator from Northwest Arkansas who holds office to make Jason Rapert seem restrained, is surely itching for some killing. He became highly aggravated last night when the Arkansas Supreme Court voted 4-to-3 to let a death row inmate scheduled for Thursday demise--one of five men the state was eager to kill in a week's time--off the hook, if only for a while. It was because the court majority determined the man was due an additional DNA test. Or so I assume. As much as I appreciate the ruling, I lament that the court declined to issue a full majority opinion explaining it. The best explanation I could get for that was that the court wanted the ruling out immediately because of the urgency and believed it didn't have time for arduous composition. To that I say write faster, in the manner … Continue reading

Australian Govt Booklet Tells ‘Gender Diverse’ Teens to Consider Sex Change Surgery – Heat Street

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2017

The state government of Victoria in Australia had funded the production of a guide encouraging gender diverse teenagers to undergo hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery. Created by a government-backed youth organization called Minus18, the OMG Im Trans booklet encourages young people to embrace their gender identity and provides them with tips on coming out, speaking to doctors, and other issues. The freely available guide revolves around the topic of gender, and says that having to deal with gendered expectations is all a bit bullshit. When were born were assigned a sex, its written on our birth certificate and then all these things the TV shows we watch, our schools, the toilets we use shape how we feel and how were supposed to act. But that little piece of paper doesnt always align with how we feel about our own gender, it states. For a lot of people gender might not be strictly male or female, the guide continues. I could be somewhere in between, or something else entirely! I have friends who experienced gender more fluidly, it can shift and change over time. The guide contains an entire section on medical transition despite repeatedly stating that gender is by … Continue reading

Doctor says testosterone therapy can provide relief for women – The Daily Tribune

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2017

Testosterone, widely and misleadingly understood to be the male hormone, may provide relief to women experiencing the symptoms of menopause, according to a Shelby Township-based physician and many other experts. Dr. Charles Mok recently published the book Testosterone: Strong Enough for a Man, Made for a Woman, which educates readers about the benefits of natural hormone replacement therapy. Mok released the book, his first, in March. It costs $25.99 and is available on Amazon. The evidence for testosterone therapy is overwhelming, and we want to get the message to doctors and, importantly, to their patients, Mok said. Advertisement Men produce 10 times more testosterone than women, but in their early reproductive years women have 10 times more testosterone than estrogen coursing through their bodies. Many experts believe that its the loss of testosterone, and not estrogen, that causes women in midlife to tend to gain weight, feel fatigue and lose mental focus, bone density and muscle tone as well as their libido. Mood swings, anxiety and hot flashes are other common symptoms. Testosterone therapy, delivered in the form of a tiny pellet the size of a grain of rice that is inserted underneath the skin, is believed to keep women … Continue reading

Chinese space scientists study human organs in space – Space Daily

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2017

Scientists around the world are looking for the "keys" to enable humans to regrow tissues or organs lost due to illness or injury, just like gecko can regrow a tail. Their quest now extends into space. Stem cell research on Tianzhou-1, China's first cargo spacecraft, is far from realizing this dream, but it's the first step to explore the possibility. Scientists from the Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) are conducting experiments on Tianzhou-1, which launched Thursday, to study the effects of micro-gravity on embryonic stem cell proliferation and differentiation. The spacecraft is carrying embryonic stem cells and embryoid bodies of mice. Scientists will observe the process of their proliferation and differentiation in space through telescope images. Parallel experiments will be conducted on the ground to compare the results, says lead researcher Duan Enkui. "We hope to get an initial understanding about the space micro-gravity effects on stem cell proliferation and differentiation," said Duan. The basis of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine research, stem cell biology is regarded as one of the most important research fields of the 21st Century. Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent cells that have the potential to become any type of cell … Continue reading

Job alert: Biology society hiring editors to screen images – Retraction Watch (blog)

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2017

A biology society is hiring three editors to screen images in submissions to its journal, Journal of Biological Chemistry which we think is a great idea. We dont typically mention job ads on our site, except when they become relevant to cleaning up the literature and with the latest job ad, the JBC joins the ranks of other journals that have taken a proactive stance against image problems, including manipulation. The publisher,American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), plans to hire three Technical Image Editors, which will screen the images contained within the thousands of papers the journal publishes each year, many of which contain multiple panels and supplemental data. Kaoru Sakabe, Data Integrity Manager at ASBMB, told us: We hope that by screening images during pre-publication, we can catch these errors and help authors correct them. We believe that this pre-publication step will also improve the overall quality of the figures because the Technical Image Editors will help authors prepare their figures for print (i.e., correct resolution, size, etc). She added: This is one in a series of initiatives weve undertaken to educate our authors and the community (the Due Diligence column in ASBMB Today and our workshops … Continue reading

107 cancer papers retracted due to peer review fraud – Ars Technica

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2017

Enlarge / Pictured: Probably an editor who peer-reviewed stuff for Tumor Biology. The journal Tumor Biology is retracting 107 research papers after discovering that the authors faked the peer review process. This isnt the journals first rodeo. Late last year, 58 paperswere retracted from seven different journals25 came fromTumor Biologyfor the same reason. Its possible to fake peer review because authors are often asked to suggest potential reviewers for their own papers. This is donebecause research subjects are often blindingly niche; a researcher working in a sub-sub-field may be more aware than the journal editor of who is best-placed to assess the work. But some journals go further and request, or allow, authors to submit the contact details of these potential reviewers. If the editor isnt aware of the potential for a scam, they then merrily send the requests for review out to fake e-mail addresses, often using the names of actual researchers. And at the other end of the fakee-mail address is someone whos in on the game and happy to sendin a friendly review. Fake peer reviewers often know what a review looks like and know enough to make it look plausible, said Elizabeth Wager, editor of the journal … Continue reading

Biology student petitions for funding to innovate Lilly Hall – Purdue Exponent

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2017

A biology major at Purdue has started a petition that calls for an increase in funding for Lilly Hall of Life Sciences. According to senior Samantha Leites petition, which is titled Make Lilly Hall Great Again, the building is described as being in poor condition and lacking in sufficient resources. Leite calls for an increased investment toward updating laboratory technologies and redesigning infrastructure to create an environment more conducive to learning. The labs are far outdated and run-down, and the lecture halls barely have temperature controls, Leite said. Biology is the cornerstone of science and yet our biology majors at a top research university are using materials that are so outdated. Alexandru Ivan, a sophomore in the College of Science, agreed with Leites sentiment. Honestly, there's a lot of equipment such as the spectrophotometers which have begun to stop working on us, Ivan said. Computers are old and slow, which makes running bioinformatics programs and other high-intensity coding API's quite tedious. Leite also described how her role as an ambassador for the College of Science inspired her to start the petition. Im a biology ambassador, and I have to give tours of the building its embarrassing for me to take … Continue reading
