Carson High biology students debut wildlife habitat – Nevada Appeal

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2017

Just in time for Earth Day this weekend, Carson High School's honors biology course broke ground on campus Thursday morning for the school's first wildlife sanctuary. The class received approval for a $5,000 grant from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to cultivate an outdoor habitat. The grant requires a 10-year commitment to protect and maintain a habitat restoration and the garden must be 1,000 square feet minimum. Each section must support desert shrubs, plants adapted to wet conditions, tall grasses and wildflowers, and large trees. Honors biology teacher Julie Koop said the class went through an arduous process to receive a grant. During the grant confirmation process, the landscape of CHS was thoroughly inspected by the agency, and students were required to blueprint garden locations. They also had to accomplish growing milkweed in the classroom as an experiment. This was all done over five months. "We really wanted this," she said. "Last year, we started a similar project on our own." With the grant, students designed three gardens for butterflies, birds, and other wildlife such as rabbits and bugs. One of the main goals is to create a comfortable and healthy environment to welcome more nature over the years. … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2017

| James Kon | THE Republic of Korea remained the second largest trading partner of Brunei Darussalam in 2016 with total trade worth B$1.094 billion. The majority of the export to Korea from Brunei Darussalam is oil and gas. Actually, the trade volume is still the same but the value shows a slight reduction compared to 2015 because of the fall in oil and gas prices, the South Korean Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Cho Won-myung said. In an interview at the Korean Embassy in the diplomatic enclave recently, the envoy told the Weekend Bulletin that Korea and Brunei are very important partners of trade and our government would like to thank Brunei Darussalam for providing a stable energy source to Korea. With the new chancery in place, he stressed that the Korean Embassy in Brunei Darussalam is continuing its efforts to expand the volume of trade between both countries in the long term, hoping that Brunei companies would import high-quality Korean products such as building materials and food products. Cho Won-myung cited that the potential of foreign investments from Korea in Brunei would be in medical and high-tech industry. Two years ago, I had invited a Korean bioinformatics company which … Continue reading

EDT April 20, 2017 FAIRFAX, VA (WUSA9) - A new beginning for a Fairfax County girl who has just received a new prosthetic arm that was designed and 3-D printed by George Mason University college students. Isabella Nicola, 10, has been raised by her mother, Andrea Cabrera, to never say never. "My mom's phrase is, when you say 'I can't do it', it's 'I can't do it yet,'" said Nicola. The fifth grader signed up to play violin in the strings program at Island Creek Elementary in Franconia last year, even though she knew it'd be a little difficult. RELATED:Dog rescued from slaughterhouse gets prosthetic legs She was born with an incomplete left arm. Her music teacher fashioned a makeshift prosthetic arm out of PVC to hold her bow. Then he a called his alma mater and got the engineering department on board. But now, Isabella has a bright pink, custom-made, brand new prosthetic arm that allows her to hold and move the bow properly. Anatomy of Turkish referendum stamp controversy – TRT World

Posted: Published on April 22nd, 2017

Turkeys main opposition, the Republican Party (CHP) claims the inclusion of ballot papers missing a stamp has cast severe doubts on the legitimacy of the outcome of last Sundays referendum approving 18 constitutional amendments. By a slim majority of 51.41%, the Turkish electorate approved the controversial amendments that will see the country move from a parliamentary system to a presidential system. Three political parties lodged objections with Turkey's Supreme Electoral Board (YSK) over the unstamped ballot papers. On Wednesday the YSK announced that 10 of its 11 members had rejected the parties' objection and appeal to annul the referendum. One member voted in favour of objections. YSK president Sadi Gven said the board decided to accept to unstamped ballot papers because the real voters cast their votes with the real ballots, real envelopes and real stamps in a healthy manner. CHPs vice chairman, Blent Tezcan said on Friday that CHP would take the case to the Council of State in a bid to overturn YSKs decision. What was the process? On the morning of the referendum, YSK sent watermarked ballot papers, envelopes bearing YSK's logo, and the stamps to polling stations. These arrived at the respective polling stations in a … Continue reading

Biotechs take lead in a new push against neurological disorders – The Boston Globe

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

From left, Sage Therapeutics Amy Schacterle, Al Robichaud, chief executive Jeff Jonas, Chris Silber, and Frank Salituro posed for a portrait at their Cambridge office. Earlier in his career, Paul Bolno worked with neuroscientists at drug giant GlaxoSmithKline PLC. Today, as chief executive of Wave Life Sciences Ltd., he is leading the Cambridge biotechs effort to advance two experimental drugs that could become the first treatments for the progressive brain disorder Huntingtons disease. Bolnos move from Big Pharma to biotech reflects a broader transition at businesses working on medicines for neurological diseases. As more than 10,000 doctors and scientists converge on Boston this week for the annual convention of the American Academy of Neurology, much of the fields progress is being made inside smaller entrepreneurial companies. Advertisement The biotechs are moving the science forward, said Bolno, whose company last week closed on a $150 million financing round and will open a Lexington plant this summer to make drugs for clinical trials. There was a mass exodus of pharma companies from the neurological space, and that created an opportunity for companies like ours. The large companies are now on the sidelines trying to get back in. With new neurodegenerative treatments finally … Continue reading

Surgery Helps Young Girl with Cerebral Palsy Walk – Newswise – Newswise (press release)

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

Newswise Bhoomi Manjunatha, 5, has been able to rely less on her walker and wheelchair, and more on her own two feet, because of a surgery performed at Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Her hard work and determination in physical and occupational therapy post-surgery has also helped Bhoomi continue to make strides. Bhoomi was born with cerebral palsy and spasticity, a muscle control disorder that involves tight or stiff muscles and the inability to control those muscles. Spasticity affects more than 12 million people worldwide, including 80 percent of people with cerebral palsy. The spinal surgery Bhoomi had in January, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, was performed by Jeffrey R. Leonard, MD, chief of Neurosurgery at Nationwide Childrens. In the operating room, the surgery team anatomically divided out dorsal nerve roots which control the sensory portion of the spinal cord. They stimulate them electronically to determine which rootlets were abnormal and section about 60 percent of the feedback to prevent the tightening and stiffness that Bhoomi experienced. The surgery went well, but my part is easy. It is Bhoomi who has months of hard work and therapy ahead of her to strengthen her muscles to take advantage of her newfound mobility, said Dr. … Continue reading
