‘Heartbreaking’: Medical standoff leaves man with cerebral palsy stranded at hospital for weeks – Washington Post

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

Alex Scott cannot speak. If he could, he might be able to answer a crucial question that has pitted the people who speak for him against one another and left him stranded in a Northern Virginia hospital for three weeks. At issue: Does the 45-year-old with cerebral palsy need a feeding tube? Scotts relatives say the group home where he has lived for two decades told them it would not take him back without a feeding tube. His family says the medical procedure is unnecessary and would benefit group-home employees more than Scott. The struggle over the feeding tube, advocacy groups say, illustrates what can happen to people with disabilities when caregivers disagree about what is best for them. The family has filed a complaint with the U.S. Justice Department and contacted the Office of Human Rights within Virginias Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. In the meantime, Scott remains at Inova Loudoun Hospital, with his sister, Samantha Tunador, cataloguing each day on social media with the hashtag #takeAlexhome. Day 11, Tunador wrote April 10 on Facebook. I promise you Alex, we are doing everything we can to get you out of the hospital and back to your home. … Continue reading

You may be a woman who is 45 years of age or older and experiencing the following hormone imbalance symptoms. If so, then you probably will want to consider something gaining popularity called rhythmic bio-identical hormone replacement. Following are hormone imbalance symptoms for you to see if you have: anxiety, allergies, foggy brain, weight gain, depression, dizziness, endometriosis, dry skin, fibrocystic breasts, hair loss, headaches, less libido, osteoporosis, or urinary tract infections. These are the typical symptoms associated with menopause and hormone imbalances, and they are caused primarily by the incorrect relationship between your body's progesterone and estrogen levels. Here's how it works The two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, co-exist in a very delicate balance, and any variations of that balance can have an effect on your health. The amounts of these hormones that the woman's body produces every month can vary, depending on factors including age, nutrition, stress, exercise or ovulation or the lack of it. Our hormones begin falling off starting with perimenopause when hormones drop you back to the same range that a girl went through at the time when she was youngger that time between adrenarchy and puberty. Doctor says testosterone therapy can provide relief for women – The Macomb Daily

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

Testosterone, widely and misleadingly understood to be the male hormone, may provide relief to women experiencing the symptoms of menopause, according to a Shelby Township-based physician and many other experts. Dr. Charles Mok recently published the book Testosterone: Strong Enough for a Man, Made for a Woman, which educates readers about the benefits of natural hormone replacement therapy. Mok released the book, his first, in March. It costs $25.99 and is available on Amazon. The evidence for testosterone therapy is overwhelming, and we want to get the message to doctors and, importantly, to their patients, Mok said. Advertisement Men produce 10 times more testosterone than women, but in their early reproductive years women have 10 times more testosterone than estrogen coursing through their bodies. Many experts believe that its the loss of testosterone, and not estrogen, that causes women in midlife to tend to gain weight, feel fatigue and lose mental focus, bone density and muscle tone as well as their libido. Mood swings, anxiety and hot flashes are other common symptoms. Testosterone therapy, delivered in the form of a tiny pellet the size of a grain of rice that is inserted underneath the skin, is believed to keep women … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

Greek Week at the University of Miami is committed to raising money and awareness for United Cerebral Palsy. University of Miami sorority and fraternity members teamed up for the annual Greek Week to help raise more than $50,000 for the United Cerebral Palsy Center of South Florida (UCP). The annual fundraising week brought together over 25 Greek chapters at UM for a fun-filled week of activities, giving the Greek community a chance to bond while also raising money and awareness for UCP. The dedication and passion the community shows during this week is a testament to our character as Greeks, said Vikesh Patel, Student Government president and brother of Alpha Sigma Phi. This is our week, as Greeks, to show how philanthropy and fun can unite to make a difference to a truly outstanding organization. Patel, along with junior Jelly Vanderwoude, were the Greek Week co-chairs and worked closely with Senior Associate Dean of Students, Steven Priepke, to put the events together. While this is a way for many chapters to meet their fellow Greek community members, it is also about giving back to the South Florida community. As advisors to the students we are committed to students education; education … Continue reading
