Waco VA opens new facility to study brain injuries | Health | wacotrib … – Waco Tribune-Herald

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

Wacos Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center now can provide the gold standard in research and treatment for brain injuries suffered on the battlefield with Thursdays opening of a 53,000-square-foot facility for the VISN 17 Center of Excellence for Research on Returning War Veterans that sprawls across three floors of Building 93. More than 150 people attended a grand-opening ceremony to mark the occasion, and U.S. Rep. Bill Flores said the Waco VA will become a hub for dealing with the invisible wounds of post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury that have become part of this countrys global war on terror. McLennan County has become one of the most popular places for veterans to live or retire, and the Center of Excellence likely will mean more veterans locating here, Flores said. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs spent $9.8 million to renovate a building at the VA campus on Memorial Drive to create a one-stop destination for research on returning war veterans. We let the contract in 2011, and our target for completion was 2014, but we lost two years because the original contractor defaulted, an issue that tied up a couple of years, said Michael … Continue reading

Disrupted brain pathway, altered stress hormones key to TBI impact differences in men, women – Pentagram

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2017

The brains of men and women are wired differently, and when it comes to traumatic brain injuries (TBI), women are more likely to develop subsequent neuropsychiatric disorders, like anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Until now, its been unclear why that is, but a new study by researchers at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) provides that missing link a potentially disrupted pathway in the brain. The study, Sex-dependent effects of mild brain blast injury on neuroendocrine stress response, was funded by the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine at USU. The findings were presented April 3 at the Endocrine Societys annual meeting by lead author Ashley Russell, a Neuroscience PhD candidate in the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at USU, and USU research assistant Elizabeth Shupe. Almost every tissue in the body is affected by the interaction between the nervous and endocrine systems. They produce the hormones that regulate sleep, mood and metabolism. USU researchers, in collaboration with colleagues at Colorado State University, sought to better understand why it is that blast brain injuries have a different impact on women and men, specifically in the neuroendocrine system. They conducted hormonal, behavioral and anatomical studies measuring … Continue reading

Stem cell research: The hope and the hype – Channel3000.com – WISC-TV3

Stem cell research: The hope and the... More Headlines MADISON, Wis. - In research labs at the McPherson Eye Research Institute, work is being done to find ways to use stem cells to halt and possibly reverse vision loss caused by blinding diseases. I have a tremendous amount of hope, said Dr. David Gamm, director of the McPherson Eye Research Institute and an ophthalmologist with UW Health. The technology is very strong, and there is a lot of real potential in what we and other laboratories are doing. Before stem cells can be used to treat blinding diseases, more research needs to be done and a clinical trial must be completed. The research team at UW is moving toward a clinical trial. You are talking about a science and a field of medicine that didnt exist two decades ago. So to be able to get as far as we have in this period of time is really remarkable. Now try telling that to someone who is losing vision. Thats a very difficult thing to be able to handle, whether it is yourself or your family member. So it is never going to be fast enough, Gamm said. While the research … Continue reading

Impact of around-the-clock in-house cardiology fellow coverage on door-to-balloon time in an academic medical center – Dove Medical Press

Luke C Kohan,1,* Vijaiganesh Nagarajan,1,* Michael A Millard,2 Michael J Loguidice,2 Nancy M Fauber,1 Ellen C Keeley1 1Division of Cardiology, 2Department of Medicine, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA * These authors contributed equally to this work Objectives: To assess if a change in our cardiology fellowship program impacted our ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) program. Background: Fellows covering the cardiac care unit were spending excessive hours in the hospital while on call, resulting in increased duty hours violations. A night float fellow system was started on July 1, 2012, allowing the cardiac care unit fellow to sign out to a night float fellow at 5:30 pm. The night float fellow remained in-house until the morning. Methods: We performed a retrospective study assessing symptom onset to arrival, arterial access to first device, and door-to-balloon (D2B) times, in consecutive STEMI patients presenting to our emergency department before and after initiation of the night float fellow system. Results: From 2009 to 2013, 208 STEMI patients presented to our emergency department and underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention. There was no difference in symptom onset to arrival (150102 minutes vs 154122 minutes, p=0.758), arterial access to first device (128 minutes vs 117 minutes, p=0.230), … Continue reading
