150-year-old drug may provide ‘off’ time relief for people with advanced Parkinson’s disease – Medical Xpress

Credit: Wikipedia New research provides evidence that an old drug may provide relief for people with advanced Parkinson's, according to a study released today that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 69th Annual Meeting in Boston, April 22 to 28, 2017. When it comes to the treatment of Parkinson's disease, the oral drug levodopa has long been considered the gold standard, improving quality of life and longevity. But as the disease progresses, the effects of the medication can partially wear off more quickly after each dose, leaving people to experience "off" time, which are periods of immobility related to temporary unresponsiveness to medication. Parkinson's symptoms, such as slowness and muscle rigidity, often make movement difficult. "If a person with Parkinson's disease can reduce their 'off' times, that can have a great impact on their everyday life," said study author Regina Katzenschlager, MD, of Danube Hospital, affiliated with the Medical University of Vienna, Austria. "In some patients in the trial, the insecurity of unpredictable periods of incapacity was completely alleviated." The drug apomorphine, first produced in 1865, … Continue reading

Spine surgery helps girl with cerebral palsy walk – Medical Xpress – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2017

April 19, 2017 Bhoomi Manjunatha, age five, walks with crutches three months after having surgery at Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Bhoomi Manjunatha, age five, has been able to rely less on her walker and wheelchair, and more on her own two feet, because of a surgery performed at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Her hard work and determination in physical and occupational therapy post-surgery has also helped Bhoomi continue to make strides. Bhoomi was born with cerebral palsy and spasticity, a muscle control disorder that involves tight or stiff muscles and the inability to control those muscles. Spasticity affects more than 12 million people worldwide, including 80 percent of people with cerebral palsy. The spinal surgery Bhoomi had in January, called selective dorsal rhizotomy, was performed by Jeffrey R. Leonard, MD, chief of Neurosurgery at Nationwide Children's. In the operating room, the surgery team anatomically divided out dorsal nerve roots which control the sensory portion of the spinal cord. They stimulate them electronically to determine which rootlets were abnormal and section about 60 percent of the feedback to prevent the tightening and stiffness that Bhoomi experienced. "The surgery went well, but my part is easy. It is Bhoomi who has months of hard … Continue reading

Family of man with brain injury struggled to find him services before his fall to death – Virginian-Pilot

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2017

CHESAPEAKE Leslie VanCleave wishes she could erase the image from her mind. Its the moment right after she checked the hotel bed, saw that her 25-year-old son was missing, then checked the bathroom empty then the balcony, also deserted. She wishes she had stopped right there in the panic to find him and had not taken the next instinctive step of a mother: looking over the balcony rail to the sidewalk below. Thats where, on April 11, her son had fallen to his death off the third-story hotel balcony in Ohio. Now Leslie and her husband, James, are planning a Saturday memorial for a son whose short life was sweet but difficult, particularly in the years since he suffered a traumatic brain injury at the age of 14. In a sense, his fatal fall began that Halloween night in 2006. The family had spent more than a decade trying to piece together services for Derek. The latest effort had fallen apart, which was why they took him on vacation instead of leaving him home with caregivers. His story is not just about a tragic, split-second accident. It also provides a long view into the world of families struggling to care … Continue reading

Why Silicon Valley Keeps Getting Biotechnology Wrong – New York Magazine

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2017

Photo: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images for Glamour Two years after the $9 billion start-up unicorn Theranos crumbled, Silicon Valley still appears to be struggling to learn its lesson when it comes to health and medical start-ups. Improbable-sounding companies continue to turn up with tens of millions of dollars in funding, no published research to back them up, and nothing but criticism from scientists. Last week, BuzzFeed News examined a new set of start-ups promising to detect cancer early via a simple blood test Freenome, Grail, and Guardant and found them on paths dangerously similar to the one Theranos was on just a few years ago. A year ago, Freenome promised to publish about its product in a scientific journal very soon to Fast Company, and still hasnt. Cancer researchers told BuzzFeed very plainly that such a simple test would be miraculous but seemed improbably advanced beyond our current technology, which was also the case with Theranoss miniature blood tests and Freenome made its lofty promises only months after Theranos started to fall apart. Like a Kickstarter project well over its anticipated delivery date, one begins to wonder if it was all fake. Silicon Valley has a kind of blind spot when … Continue reading

Simply put, the ATR determines the volatility of a security over a given period of time, or the tendency of the security to move one direction or another. Some investors may find the Williams Percent Range or Williams %R as a helpful technical indicator. Presently, Powershares Dynamic Biotechnology and Genome Portfolio (PBE)s Williams Percent Range or 14 day Williams %R is resting at -43.44. Values can range from 0 to -100. A reading between -80 to -100 may be typically viewed as strong oversold territory. A value between 0 to -20 would represent a strong overbought condition. ‘Nature’s Wildest Weapons’ UM Biology Professor Stars In BBC Nature Documentary – Newstalkkgvo

Posted: Published on April 19th, 2017

Douglas Emlen University of Montana Biology Professor Doug Emlens 2014 book, Animal Weapons, The Evolution of Battle has been adapted by the BBC into a documentary starring Emlen, called Natures Wildest Weapons, Horns, Tusks and Antlers. Ive spent a lot of years trying to explain why some animals have these extraordinary weapons, Emlen said. The same conditions in all these species lead to an arms race with bigger and bigger weapons, so whether youre talking about elk, or tusks in elephants, or horns on beetles, or claws on fiddler crabs, the story comes out to be pretty much always the same. Emlen said the concepts in his book also dovetailed into another species, man. I ended up stumbling on the fact that the story is also the same in the military arms race, he said. So, the same kind of phenomena explains arms races and military technologies as for extreme weapons like antlers and tusks. Emlen said the BBC contacted him and spent a great deal of time following him around and filming his work. They wanted to put together a documentary that followed me as I try to explain these crazy extreme weapons, he continued. They came out in … Continue reading
