Dad’s Facebook Appeal To Find Feeding Tube For Daughter With Cerebral Palsy Is Huge Success – Huffington Post UK

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

A dad who appealed on Facebook for a specific sized feeding tube for his daughter who has cerebral palsy, was overwhelmed by the response. Dan Grace, from Newcastle, urged others to share his Facebook post to find his seven-year-old daughter a tube to help her eat. She had fallen ill due to the tube in her stomach being the wrong size. However, the device she needed (Viagon 2cm x 30cm G) had a supply issue and was difficult to source. Weve seen enough of Mollys discomfort now (years worth) and as Mollys parents and her voice, we arent prepared to sit back and watch this happen any longer, Grace wrote on Facebook on Thursday 13 April. Grace continued: We are asking that this appeal be liked, shared (on your Facebook pages, friends Facebook pages, special needs Facebook pages, hospital Facebook pages and anywhere else) and comment (your location) to try and help us get one of these Viagon 2cm x 30cm G Jet devices urgently. The post was widely shared within hours, including within private and internal hospital Facebook pages. Sarah-Jane Cameron, founder of medical transport charity Scottish Emergency Rider Volunteer Service (ScotsERVS) saw the post on Facebook and informed … Continue reading

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - "She's going to keep progressing, but eventually KIF1A will kind of win and pull her down," Sadie Scott's mom Shannon said. Sadie Scott's parents are doing everything they can to stop that from happening. Sadie, a curious, energetic 20-month-old, was recently diagnosed with KIF1A Disorder, a degenerative brain disorder that's caused her to be legally blind and low-tone. The Scott's just returned from New York, where they met with Dr. Wendy Chung, a geneticist who's agreed to research KIF1A Disorder, and other KIF1A families. While there, the Scott's were given some tough news. "Dr. Chung explained that there's a couple different kinds of mutations," Shannon Scott said. "Unfortunately the kind that Sadie has is the stronger of the two options out there." While emotions ran high on the trip, Shannon Scott said overall, it gave her hope. "It was really comforting to connect with other families and the fact that Dr. Chung has made a plan for us to pursue with the funds that we raise makes the idea of a treatment for this disease really tangible," Shannon Scott said. So what's next? For one, they need to get a mouse for the study, which will … Continue reading

A Johannesburg mother has told of how a multimillion-rand payout will change her child's life. A Johannesburg mother has told of how a multimillion-rand payout will change her child's life. The mother, who asked not be named, took on the Gauteng department of health after her daughter, five, was born with cerebral palsy due to negligence by staff at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Diepkloof, Soweto. She was awarded R25.4-million in damages by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg in February. Although the department was ordered to pay by March 8, it has not done so. The child suffers from severe cerebral palsy due to failure by the hospital doctors to do an emergency Caesarean section when she was born on December 30 2011. She cannot sit, talk, walk or even crawl. The mother and child live in a two-roomed shack. "First, I want her to have a home where she will be able to move freely. I want her to go to school so she can learn, play and be with children like her. "She cannot do anything on her own," said the woman, originally from Limpopo. The mother said her daughter had not led a normal … Continue reading

Researchers move forward with biomarker test to uncover babies’ brain injury – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

Emergency rooms see many babies, for many reasons. Theres a fever, a seizure, an accident, vomiting and diarrhea. There could be fussiness, lethargy or problems with feeding. Many infants are easily treated and sent home, but doctors say some of these same little patients may show up next time with a brain injury caused by abuse one that leads to permanent disability or death. Sorting out which babies have hidden brain trauma from abuse isnt easy, if they seem relatively well when brought into the hospital with any in a list of common symptoms. At Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, researchers have created a blood test to detect bleeding in the brain that may have resulted from abusive head trauma sometimes called shaken baby syndrome. They published an explanation of how the test was developed in last weeks JAMA Pediatrics journal. This is for those instances where they look well, said lead author Rachel Berger, chief of the Child Advocacy Center at Childrens. A physician who also holds a masters in public health, Dr. Berger said good pediatric emergency room doctors generally use their clinical judgment to detect 70 percent of … Continue reading

It happened Wednesday, March 29, at approximately 10:45 p.m. at the Chuggin' Monkey bar located in the 200 block of East 6th Street. I am a survivor of a brainstem aneurysm rupture and brain bleed. On a Sunday morning this past November, suddenly I felt a pop in my ears. The fire-like pain ascended from my chin across my face and down my spine to the soles of my feet. Next, I felt the worst headache I had ever had.Tylenol did not alleviate the headache. With over two decades of experience in health care, I recognized the nature and seriousness of my symptoms. I used an app on my smartphone to video-call my dear friend, a physician, to let her know what I suspected. I was driven to a nearby ER and then airlifted, within an hour, to a top neurosurgery center at Johns Hopkins. Tests confirmed the brainstem bleed that was caused by the rupture. Two successful brain surgeries later, I am managing occupational, physical and speech therapy, and I am able to walk, talk, hear, see and write. As I continue to follow my neuro-rehabilitation program, it appears that I will be able to live independently, drive and return to work. According to data provided by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, one in 50, or 6 million in the U.S. have un-ruptured … Continue reading
