Now he sees Dr. Heidi Crayton at the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Greater Washington for treatment. Its quite a bit worse now than it was then, said King. But now there is a new drug, approved by the FDA just two weeks ago, to address his progressive form of MS. Its called Ocrevus. And what Im hoping for now is with this drug it will like halt it where it is, said King. Dr. Crayton says its the first treatment in the DC area. The goal is always to try to make people as flat as possible and unchanged as possible, said Dr. Crayton. Thats because right now, theres no drug to turn back the clock. Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

The first drug to treat an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis has hit the market. Click here to listen to an excerpt from the conversation. The FDA approved the drug, sold as Ocrevus, two weeks ago. The approval comes after a series of clinical trials across the nation, including at the University of South Floridas Multiple Sclerosis Center in Tampa. Health News Floridas Stephanie Colombini talked with Dr. Janice Maldonado, Assistant Professor of Neurology at the center to learn more about Ocrevus and its development. Heres some highlights from their conversation: MALDONADO: Multiple sclerosis has two different presentations in which [Ocrevus] was tested. The relapsing form of MS is the form in which patients will have events that take away neurologic function, meaning transient times where they lose function in a limb, their vision, etc. The drug was tested in patients with the relapsing form of MS; and in the other form of MS, which is less common, it occurs in 10-15% of the MS population, and thats the primary-progressive form of MS. In primary-progressive MS, a patient will start to have a neurologic problem, and it does not get better ever; it accumulates overtime, it progresses. COLOMBINI: What were … Continue reading

Hormone replacement therapy and gender reassignment surgery are not legal in Vietnam. Many trans people have resorted to buying bootlegged drugs from neighbouring Thailand. Huynh Nha An, 21, self-prescribes and injects hormones to stop her facial hair growing back. Every month she must decide whether she will spend her minimum wage on hormones or food. She relies on advice from her friends about how much medication she should take and how often. When I dont use hormones regularly I turn back into a boy, Im no longer smooth like a girl, she told the AFP. In 2015, Vietnam updated its laws to recognise the true gender of peoplewho had undergone gender reassignment surgery. But the surgery is still banned in the country, so many travel abroad to have it. Science vs all-natural: Which is better for hot flushes? | Starts at 60 – Starts at 60

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

If you see a female friend or colleague sitting in front of a desk fan in winter while everyone else is shivering in sweaters, chances are she is having a hot flush, courtesy of the menopause. Hot flushes and night sweats are the most common symptoms of the female reproductive milestone. The menopause is often blamed for a host of other symptoms such as insomnia, joint pains, depression and mood swings, vaginal dryness and difficulty concentrating. Hot flushes can last for years and be debilitating, and conventional treatments such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and antidepressants come with risks. HRT increases the chance of developing potentially deadly clots in the leg veins; a small increase in breast cancer risk has also been reported. Because of these risks, women may turn to herbal products that are purportedly safer and have fewer side effects. A native American root called black cohosh (Actaea racemosa) is included in many such treatments used for hot flushes. The root has a long history of use in Europe and became popular around the world after receiving German approval as a non-prescription drug for hot flushes in 2000. In Australia, it is sold in various formulations and promoted … Continue reading

Protein primes mouse stem cells to quickly repair injury, study finds – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

April 18, 2017 Credit: martha sexton/public domain Like drag car racers revving their engines at the starting line, stem cells respond more quickly to injury when they've been previously primed with one dose of a single protein, according to a study from the Stanford University School of Medicine. Mice given the priming protein recover muscle function more quickly after damage, their skin heals more rapidly and even the shaved area around the injury regrows hair more quickly, the study found. Harnessing the power of this protein may one day help people recover more quickly from surgery or restore youthful vigor to aging stem cells. "We're trying to better understand wound healing in response to trauma and aging," said Thomas Rando, MD, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences. "We've shown that muscle and bone marrow stem cells enter a stage of alertness in response to distant injury that allows them to spring into action more quickly. Now we've pinpointed the protein responsible for priming them to do what they do better and faster." Rando, who also directs Stanford's Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging, is the senior author of the study, which will be published April 18 in Cell … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Goal: Ola Kamara's Equalizer – Massive Report – Massive Report

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

Welcome to the Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal (or near goal) from the previous weeks Columbus Crew SC match. For Week 7 on the 2017 MLS Season, we take a look at Ola Kamaras 37th minute tap-in goal that put Crew SC level with Toronto FC at 1-1, as part of the 2-1 win on Saturday. Heres a look at the finish from the Columbus striker. In the 20th minute, Jozy Altidore put Toronto in the lead with a headed goal off a Victor Vazquez corner kick. Toronto controlled much of the first 37 minutes, but Columbus begun to settle down and get back into this match. Kamaras equalizing goal begins with a TFC throw in. Toronto left center-back Justin Morrow had three options in the above photo: center midfielder Michael Bradley, left midfielder Raheem Edwards, and center midfielder Armando Cooper. An unmarked Bradley was probably the best option, but Morrow instead opted to make a short throw to Cooper. Morrows throw barely reached Cooper, who was easily dispossessed by Crew SC winger Niko Hansen. Above, notice that Crew SC attacking midfielder Federico Higuain is moving ahead of Morrow even before Hansen receives the … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Disney musical: Composer reveals process of creating iconic songs – ABC Online

Posted: Published on April 18th, 2017

Posted April 17, 2017 14:25:39 You probably don't know Alan Menken's name, but you do know his songs. The acclaimed composer and songwriter is the hidden face behind some of Disney's most iconic musicals, including Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin. His body of work has earned him eight Oscars and 16 Golden Globes, and he's not done yet. Mr Menken is currently in Australia for the premiere of the stage musical of Aladdin and will head home soon to work on the upcoming live action film version of the story. So how does he create a Disney song? And what is the process for bringing a fledgling idea all the way to the big screen? The first thing to know is that for most Disney animations the musical dramatists aka the songwriters are brought in by the studio first. "That's something people don't know," Mr Menken told ABC News Breakfast. "Disney will say, 'We want to tell this story' and then we say, 'OK, how do we do it?'. "Generally you go from the basic story, to the basic structure of telling the story, to what musical style you're going to use to tell the story … Continue reading
