TAMUK biology professor presented book, art at Tejano Civil Rights … – Nueces County Record Star

CORPUS CHRISTI - Manuel Andres Soto is proud of his heritage. The Texas A&M University-Kingsville associate professor of biology will spoke openly about the care and loving he received from his parents and extended family and bragged about his upbringing as a tool that helped shape his destiny. Soto, called Andy, is also not afraid to brag about his humble beginnings in a South Texas Colonia in the farming community of Edroy, Texas, about 40 miles from Corpus Christi heading north on I-37. A Colonia is a community that lacks some of the most basic living necessities such as potable water and sewer systems, electricity, paved roads and safe and sanitary housing, Soto explains. But, he wasnt poor. The riches he received in that Colonia allowed him to earn bachelors and masters degrees in biology from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and later a doctorate from Gulf Coast Research Laboratory at the University of Southern Mississippi. Now, Soto tells all about his experiences in a new book titled simply, Life in a South Texas Colonia. The book also features Sotos original art depicting his experiences in the Colonia. Soto explained his book and art work at a reading and book-signing event at … Continue reading

Current Tools Traditional approaches and tools available for the risk assessment of safe and efficacious drugs have been based on measuring the parent drug in plasmaboth in animal models and humans. This often does not provide a sufficient level of information to the scientist. It is recognized that most drug targets are not in plasma, and determining the relevant tissue distribution of not only the parent drug but also its metabolites would provide much greater understanding of pharmacology and toxicology. The current best practice methods of quantitative whole body autoradiography (QWBA) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) put the emphasis on tissues rather than plasma, but still fall short of providing the complete picture. Both techniques have challenges. QWBA is the technique of choice for determining drug distribution,1 and the data generated is often primarily provided in new drug regulatory submissions. The technique, however, presents a composite of the total radioactivity present and cannot distinguish parent drug from metabolite. Thus it has severe limitations for researchers looking for insight into biochemical pathways and mechanisms. LC-MS analysis is performed on extracts from tissue homogenates. This type of analysis does not elucidate any spatial information and, just as importantly, can be misleading. For … Continue reading

Contact: Sasha Steinberg STARKVILLE, Miss.Three Mississippi State students who conducted faculty-guided research projects throughout the current school year recently took top awards at the 10th annual MSU Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Program Symposium. Sponsored by the universitys biological sciences department, the symposium provided 22 undergraduates the opportunity to showcase research projects they conducted during the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters. Three of those students, as well as their respective mentors, received special awards. First-, second- and third-place winners each garnered Downer Undergraduate Research Awards that honor Professor Emeritus Donald N. Downer of Starkville, a former longtime department head. The honorees include: FIRSTAnna C. Jackson, a senior biological sciences major from Starkville. Her project Please Do Not Feed the Animals: An Analysis of the Effect of Anthropogenic Stresses on Mating Behaviors Displayed by Sister Isles Rock Iguanas was completed under the guidance of MSU Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Mark Welch. SECONDAaron W. Albee, a sophomore microbiology major from Starkville. His project Impact of Occidiofungin on Morphological Switching in C. albicans was completed under the guidance of MSU Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Donna Gordon. THIRDPeter G. 12th Annual Wisconsin Stem Cell Symposium to focus on bioengineering – University of Wisconsin-Madison

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2017

Over the past several years, gene editing has become a powerful tool for creating cellular models of human diseases, particularly with the emergence of technologies like CRISPR-Cas9. But one concern with gene editing tools like CRISPR which allows scientists to cut and paste genetic sequences into a genome to correct errors or introduce changes is precision, says Krishanu Saha, a bioengineering professor at the University of WisconsinMadison. That is, editing genes sometimes introduces errors that could have unintended consequences. Saha is using CRISPR to reprogram human pluripotent stem cells and immune cells to study diseases like Fragile X syndrome, to discover new drugs and develop cell therapies, and to ask fundamental questions about human biology. On Wednesday, April 19, he will present the strategies his lab has developed to make gene editing more precise at the 12th Annual Wisconsin Stem Cell Symposium. My talk is focused on genome-level engineering of human cells, Saha says. I will cover ongoing work in my lab that engineers human pluripotent stem cells and T cells from cancer patients. The strategies Saha and his research team have developed help correct pathogenic point mutations and introduce transgenes with precision, reducing and in some cases eliminating undesirable … Continue reading

Eden Hazard and Jos Mourinho: anatomy of a rollercoaster relationship – The Guardian

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2017

Eden Hazard was in imperious form when Chelsea and Manchester United met in the Premier League in October. Photograph: Catherine Ivill - AMA/Getty Images Fans, content with a perfunctory victory, were beginning to drift away from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea were leading Porto 2-0, having been in control for most of the game. In a turbulent season, the Champions League had again provided a pocket of calm. And then Jos Mourinho decided to take off Eden Hazard, who had been involved in the buildup to both Chelsea goals. It had probably been Hazards best performance of the season to that point and he left the pitch to warm applause. He slapped hands with Loc Rmy but then, as Mourinho went to congratulate him, Hazard shrugged him off. It is easy, of course, to read too much into individual moments in retrospect but even at the time that felt telling. To show such obvious disdain for your manager in the moment of victory exposed the palpable discord that existed within the squad a week before Michael Emenalo, the Chelsea technical director, spoke of it in the wake of Mourinhos sacking. From that moment, it felt that Mourinho was doomed, that, even with … Continue reading

TJC to host Human Anatomy & Physiology Society regional conference – Tyler Morning Telegraph

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2017

Tyler Junior College has been selected as the host site for Saturdays regional conference of the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society. HAPS is a national society of more than 1,700 educators from high schools, two- and four-year colleges, universities, and private businesses in the United States, Canada and throughout the rest of the world, said Dr. Betsy Ott, TJC biology professor and recent past president of the organization. Ott has been a professor at TJC since 1982, teaching anatomy and physiology, general biology for non-science majors, and biology for majors. In addition to her term last year as HAPS president, Ott was also named an honorary member of the National Association of Biology Teachers, the groups highest honor. Meetings and workshops will be in the newly renovated Anatomy & Physiology labs in the Pirtle Technology building on the TJC main campus. Exhibitors will be on hand from textbook, teaching and technology companies, along with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Workshops will range from content updates to innovations in teaching techniques and technology. At the end of the day, participants will be given a tour of the state-of-the-art simulation labs in TJCs Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Center. For more on … Continue reading
