TBI is an extremely serious and, unfortunately, increasingly common condition which, for combat veterans, is in most cases the direct result of the proximity to the concussive force of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), mortars, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and other explosive weaponry. The symptoms of TBI which occur because of the head trauma include sleep disturbance, problems with concentration, ringing in the ears, nausea, and seizures. When left untreated, these symptoms can develop into more severe neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Due to the concussive blasts of IEDs in Afghanistan … Continue reading

Brain tissue from a petri dish: Stem cell research — ScienceDaily – Science Daily

Posted: Published on April 14th, 2017

The most complex organ in humans is the brain. Due to its complexity and, of course, for ethical reasons, it is extremely difficult to do scientific experiments on it -- ones that could help us to understand neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's, for example. Scientists at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) of the University of Luxembourg have now succeeded in turning human stem cells derived from skin samples into tiny, three-dimensional, brain-like cultures that behave very similarly to cells in the human midbrain. In the researchers' petri dishes, different cell types develop, connect into a network, exchange signals and produce metabolic products typical of the active brain. "Our cell cultures open new doors to brain research," says Prof. Dr. Jens Schwamborn, in whose LCSB research group Developmental & Cellular Biology the research work was done. "We can now use them to study the causes of Parkinson's disease and how it could possibly be effectively treated." The team publishes its results today in the scientific journal Stem Cell Reports. The human midbrain is of particular interest to Parkinson's researchers: it is the seat of the tissue structure known medically as the substantia nigra. Here, nerve cells -- specifically dopaminergic neurons … Continue reading

How Medical Research Is Boosting Connecticut’s Economy – Yale News

Posted: Published on April 14th, 2017

by Kathleen Raven April 13, 2017 Jason Thomson, a core lab manager at the Yale Stem Cell Center, rebounded after large pharmaceutical companies retrenched in Connecticut. Photo credit: Robert Lisak Six years ago, Jason Thomson learned that his 13-year position in research at Pfizer would come to an end. He was among 1,100 employees laid off at the companys drug development laboratory in Groton. He feared that his career was in jeopardy. He didnt want to move his family and worried he wouldnt be able to land a comparable job in Connecticut. But things worked out much better than he expected. I was fortunate, says Thomson, a resident of Colchester. I was out of work for just over six months. Today, hes a lab manager at the Yale Stem Cell Center in New Haven. He plays a key role at the center, overseeing the preparation of stem cells that other researchers use to pursue their studies. Thomsons personal journey illustrates an economic shift in Connecticut. Over the past decade, several large pharmaceutical companies have either closed their doors here or cut hundreds of jobs from their local payrolls. These moves pose a threat to the state economy. For Connecticut to … Continue reading

Nasal spray may limit brain damage from seizures – Futurity: Research News

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2017

A nasal spray can limit damage to the brain from a seizure disorder called status epilepticus, a study in animals shows. The disorder can present itself as a single seizure that lasts longer than 30 minutes or a series of seizures between which the person doesnt regain consciousness. If it doesnt stop quickly, even one episode can cause brain damage, loss of cognitive function, and memory loss. Saving the brain from injury and disease is certainly one of the holy grails of medicine. Saving the brain from injury and disease is certainly one of the holy grails of medicine, says Darwin J. Prockop, chair in genomic medicine and professor at the Texas A&M College of Medicine and co-senior author of the paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Our paper suggests one way that this might be done, and not by a procedure that requires brain surgery or even injection into a vein: All that would be required is a nasal spray that a patient might receive in a doctors office. The compound in the nasal spray is anti-inflammatory exosomes, or extracellular vesicles, which Prockop and his team isolated from cultures of mesenchymal stem cells, a type … Continue reading

New FDA Approved Treatment For MS Is Being Called A ‘Game Changer’ – CBS Philly

April 12, 2017 5:59 PM By Stephanie Stahl PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Multiple sclerosis affects about 400,000 people in the U.S. causing numbness, vision problems, pain and mobility issues. This new MS treatment comes with a hefty price $65,000 a year. It will be on the market in the next two weeks. Mike Miller was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis almost 10 years ago. It started with changes in his vision. It took a few years, and I went numb from the waist down, said Miller. He is one of the first patients in the country to receive the new FDA approved drug called Ocrevus. The drug treats relapsing MS, which is the most common form and also primary progressive MS, a severe form of the disease. This is first drug ever approved for that. We use words like, game changer,' said Dr. Aaron Boster with Ohio health Riverside Hospital. Mulitiple sclerosis happens when the immune system attacks and damages the central nervous system. The new drug targets an immune cell involved in the disease. It ends up massively decreasing how often people have MS attacks, massively decreasing the new spots that form on the brain, and slowing down the progression of their … Continue reading
