New cardiology team arrives at Newman Regional Health – Emporia Gazette

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2017

Newman Regional Health has welcomed a new cardiology team, which began work at the hospital on Monday. Dr. Pat Crawley and Dr. Mike Lloydm along with their practitioners Krista Ohmie, Physician Assistant, and Mary Warden, Nurse Practitioner, are already seeing patients at the hospital and clinic. The quartet may be new to Newman Regional Health, but it is quite accustomed to working as a team. All four were previously employed at Cardiovascular Consultants of Kansas and have worked together for years. They made me an offer and I said, my mid-level (Warden) comes with me, Crawley said. We all work well together. The four of us all work really well together, Ohmie said. We help each other out, work hard and have fun at the same time. All four providers believe strongly in patient-focused care and providing time for their patients. In addition to their extensive medical training and award-winning cardiological care, all four also possess impressive bedside manner with a focus on humor. They are going to get more dedicated time, Crawley said. We are very down to earth and we dont doctor speak. We give them as much time as they need. I think we will bring a … Continue reading

Can furry pets reduce infant obesity? – On Biology – BMC Blogs Network (blog)

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2017

Pet owners often wax lyrical about how their pets enrich their lives, but did you know pets can affect us at a more microscopic level? Research published today in Microbiome by Anita Kozyrskyj and colleagues show that exposure to household pets leads to changes in infant gut microbiota that in turn could reduce infant obesity. Srimathy Sriskantharajah 7 Apr 2017 We are all full of harmless microbes that form our microbiota, but we are not born with these. Our microbiota develops over time and with exposure to the world around us. The gut microbiota of a newborn is not diverse, but by the age of one the gut microbiota begins to resemble that of an adult. Despite gut colonization being relatively quick, the period just before and after birth is a critical time for gut microbiota development in infants. It is already known that the make up of our microbiota can impact our current and future health, and this make up depends on our lifestyles and environment. It then stands to reason that an infants environment can affect its microbiota and consequently its health possibly even impacting on later childhood and adult health. Furthermore, dysbiosis or an imbalance in the … Continue reading

REVIEW | 'A GAMBLER'S ANATOMY' – The Gazette: Eastern Iowa Breaking News and Headlines

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2017

By By Rob Cline, correspondent Apr 8, 2017 at 12:37 pm | Print View Jonathan Lethems newest novel, A Gamblers Anatomy, is filled with masks both literal and metaphorical. Alexander Bruno, a professional backgammon play who makes his living defeating rich dilettantes, hits a catastrophic losing streak at the same time a blot begins to obscure his vision. The book follows Brunos seemingly ever more humiliating adventures, which lead to his face and his life being wholly remade. Throughout the book, masks play an important role as characters including Bruno disguise themselves voluntarily or under duress. Lethem highlights the ways in which we are unknowable to each other and to ourselves, even when we try to strip all of our masks away. Lethem, whose enthusiasm for the works of sci-fi author Philip K. Dick is well known, offers the reader the kind of mystery one might find in one of Dicks novels. Bruno may or may not be psychic. The blot and the growth responsible for it may or may not be dampening his abilities. A Gamblers Anatomy also is infused with the kind of paranoia (which may not be paranoia at all) that might be found in a Thomas … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Play: The Day Bryce Petty Almost Died – The Phinsider

Posted: Published on April 9th, 2017

On the 1st play of the 4th quarter in the Week 15 match-up between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, Bryce Petty fell victim to a snap count miscommunication and it nearly cost him his life. After Cameron Wake and Ndamukong Suhs impact, I fully expected to see Pettys intestines randomly scattered across the NFL logo on the field. Winning 34-10, MetLife Stadium had already been taken over by a sea of aqua and orange. This play made me cringe and I was sitting in the nosebleeds. A collective ooh, with accompanying facial twitch, overcame the crowd to empathize with the pain - it must have felt like getting hit by Mike Tyson in Mike Tysons Punch-Out and a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick at the same time. Ryan Fitzpatrick came out and put up a whopping 17.1 QB rating for the rest of the game and the rest was history. Dolphins win. But wow, this play was almost as bad as Mark Sanchez using his face to wipe Brandon Moores butt. Lawyer: Mr. SUTTON, what did you witness Saturday night at MetLife Stadium? Me: I witnessed Mr. Suh and Mr. Wake kill Mr. Petty. I also saw the Jets … Continue reading

Cerebral palsy may be linked to birth weight – Independent Online

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Children whose weight at birth is very low or much higher than normal have a greater risk of suffering from cerebral palsy than average-size babies, according to British scientists. In a study that compared data from 10 European birth registers of 4 500 children born with the disorder, they found that babies with a low weight for their gestational age were four to six times more likely to have the disability. Very big babies had a threefold raised risk. "Babies that are the extreme of their expected growth, too big or too small, are at considerable increase of cerebral palsy," Dr Mary Jane Platt, a public health epidemiologist at the University of Liverpool in England, said in an interview. "That provides a clue to where we should look more closely for what might be causing cerebral palsy," she added. Instead of focusing on what happens during the birth, Platt suggests the cause of the disability could occur during the course of the pregnancy. Children with a slightly higher birthweight than normal had the lowest risk of cerebral palsy, according to the study published in The Lancet medical journal. Cerebral palsy is the most common cause of physical disability in children … Continue reading

Mr Buttery will be joined on his journey, which marks 200-years since the publication of James Parkinsons essay on the disease, by skipper Billy Taylor and fellow rowers Barry Hayes and James Plumley. Mr Taylor, 44, said:Rowing the Indian Ocean is no easy feat at the best of times - the physical and mental challenge will be enormous for all of us. For Robin, the row will be that much harder. Hes already a winner in my books. Scientists will use an on-board camera to monitor in minute detail Mr Butterys reaction to conditions around him and the effort he will make during the ocean crossing. They will compare this to the results of a detailed medical examination of the crew set off and after they arrive, in order to understand whether Parkinsons is metabolic as well as a neurological disorder, Professor Helen Dawes, who leads the Movement Science Group at the Oxford Brookes, said: Anyone involved in sport will know that motor skills and fitness improve with practice and that your movement is affected when you are tired. We will monitor motor skill changes, alongside physiological and emotional responses. Its an important piece of research that will help us … Continue reading

New Blood Test Could Diagnose MS in One Week – Healthline

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2017

Imagine a blood test that could allow a medical professional to diagnose multiple sclerosis (MS) within just seven days. Today, a diagnosis can take months or even years to confirm. IQuity, a start-up company based in Tennessee, plans to launch such a test in May. They claim it has a 90 percent success rate in detecting MS. To date, no one test can guarantee a diagnosis of MS. Currently, diagnosing MS is accomplished through tests such as MRI and the process of elimination for other illnesses. Due to the diseases ability to mimic symptoms of other illnesses, and because no two people present MS symptoms exactly the same, the diagnosis process can be a guessing game. Read more: Early signs of multiple sclerosis Bruce Bebo, executive vice president of research at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, leads the organizations team, whose goal is to invest the agencys resources in the most impactful way. There is an unmet need for speedier and more accurate ways to diagnose MS, Bebo told Healthline. The current process works by elimination. Having a blood-based test could simplify or speed up the process, both of which would be advancement in treating MS. He noted that the … Continue reading
